Elderly taxi driver claims trial to sexually assaulting teen passenger

(File pic) PETALING JAYA : A taxi driver was charged in the Muar sessions court today with committing sexual assault on a teenage passenger in May. Low Fatt Tham, 76, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him in Mandarin by a court interpreter before judge Sayani Nor, Harian Metro reported. Low is accused of committing the offence on the 16-year-old student inside his taxi after it stopped at a traffic light on Jalan Mohd Salim in Kluang at about 8.20pm on May 13. He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Diyana Najihah Fauzi prosecuted while Low was represented by lawyer Nursyidah Muslim. The accused was allowed to post bail at RM10,000 with one surety but was ordered to report to the nearest police station every month and barred from contacting prosecution witnesses, particularly the victim, until the case is concluded. The court set Sept 4 for mention.

Elderly taxi driver charged with sexual assault of schoolgirl
MUAR: A senior citizen was charged at the Sessions Court here today with sexual assault of a schoolgirl who had boarded his taxi in May. However, Low Fatt Tham, 76, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him by a court interpreter in Mandarin before judge Sayani Mohd Nor. According to the charge, Low allegedly committed the act against the 16-year-old victim in the taxi while stopped at a traffic light along Jalan Mohd Salim, Kluang, about 8.20pm on May 13. The charge was framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction. Deputy public posecutor Diyana Najihah Muhamed Fauzi prosecuted, while the accused was represented by lawyer Nursyidah Muslim. The prosecution offered bail at RM20,000, but the court allowed bail at RM10,000 with one surety. The court also imposed additional conditions requiring the accused to report to the nearest police station once a month. He was also warned not to contact or disturb the prosecution witnesses, particularly the victim, until the case is resolved. The court set Sept 4 for mention and submission of documents.
