00's rock icon attends his own lookalike contest with a bag of old clothes
A 2000s rock legend showed up to his own lookalike contest in Omaha, Nebraska, delighting fans. The event was held on August 1 as a benefit for Omaha Girls Rock, a music education scheme in the Nebraska city. Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, who is from Omaha, even gifted a bag of his clothes to the winner who was voted to look the most like the singer. The contest gave participants the opportunity to perform karaoke of Bright Eyes' songs together, holding a single cigarette provided by the contest. When Oberst turned up, fans were thrilled to see the singer-songwriter had brought a bag of his own clothes (unceremoniously placed in a garbage bag) that he ultimately gifted to the winner. The winner of the competition wrote on X: 'This will let y'all know who I am but tonight I went to a Conor Oberst lookalike contest and no one showed up so I grabbed some different clothes, came back, and entered. He showed up. I won. And I got photos with him and won a garbage bag of his old clothes.' Bright Eyes, known for hit songs like First Day of My Life and Lua, released their album Five Dice, All Threes' last year. Speaking about the project in an interview with NME, Oberst said: 'This time, I still hope the songs resonate and have equal amounts of meaning, but as far as the sounds and approach to the music, it's a bit lighter. More Trending 'The word 'fun' is very rarely used to describe my band, but maybe it is a bit more fun,' he continued. 'When we last went on tour we were cruising around with a 14-piece band and strings and horns. This record is going to be just guitars; rock and roll stuff.' In recent years, it's become something of a trend for celebrities to make surprise appearances at their own lookalike contests. Glen Powell turned up at one in Austin, Texas last November, promising a film cameo to the winner's family. A month earlier, Timothée Chalamet went incognito at a similar event in New York. Drake took it a step further in Toronto, awarding $10,000 to the winner who most looked like him. Got a story? Community raises more than $94,000 after 4yo Lua Valles-Garcia killed by falling palm tree in suburban Darwin
Community members have rallied around the family of a four-year-old girl who was killed by a falling palm tree in Darwin, with more than $94,000 donated to help them navigate "this time of profound grief". Lua Valles-Garcia was struck by the tree while playing in a yard in Tiwi, in the city's north, and died while being rushed to hospital on Saturday afternoon. The palm tree also struck an 11-year-old boy, who NT Police said sustained "non-life-threatening injuries". The four-year-old and her brother had been students at Milkwood Steiner School, where their mother, Soraya Valles-Garcia, worked as a year 1 teacher. Milkwood Steiner School principal Netanela Mizrahi launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Lua's family in the wake of the "tragic accident". "Funds raised here will support Soraya, Borja and Rio financially at this impossibly difficult time, to help them to be with family in Spain and for funeral arrangements." More than 660 donations have been made in less than a week, some people gifting as much as $2,000 each. Ms Mizrahi thanked "our loving community for your generosity", with 86 per cent of the $110,000 fundraising goal achieved as of Friday afternoon. "Nothing can change the devastating news, but every bit helps this family to be where they need to be at this time of profound grief," she said. "May her beautiful soul rest in peace and her family be surrounded by love, healing and care in this difficult time ahead. Alice Springs Steiner School also expressed sympathies and support for its "fellow Steiner School family", and said "in times of sorrow, the strength and compassion of our community shines brightest". In a social media post, the school said Lua's parents "wish to return to their homeland of Spain to be with extended family as they grieve and begin to heal".

This forgotten FTP flaw lets hackers take full control - millions of servers exposed across the world
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Hackers launched attacks just one day after the flaw's full technical write-up was made public Many servers stayed vulnerable for weeks despite a fix being released long before the disclosure Null byte injection in the username field lets attackers bypass login and run Lua code Security researchers have confirmed attackers are actively exploiting a critical vulnerability in Wing FTP Server, a widely used solution for managing file transfers. Researchers at Huntress say the flaw identified as CVE-2025-47812 was disclosed publicly on June 30, and exploitation began almost immediately, just a day later. This vulnerability allows unauthenticated remote code execution (RCE), enabling attackers to run code as root or SYSTEM on vulnerable servers. Wing FTP Server remains vulnerable in unpatched systems Wing FTP Server is deployed across enterprise and SMB environments, and it is used by more than 10,000 organizations globally, including high-profile clients such as Airbus, Reuters, and the US Air Force. The vulnerability exists in versions 7.4.3 and earlier and has been patched in version 7.4.4, which was released on May 14, 2025. Despite the fix being available for over a month, many users remained unpatched when technical details were made public. Security researcher Julien Ahrens, explained the issue stems from improper input sanitization and unsafe handling of null-terminated strings. The weakness allows a null byte injected in the username field to bypass authentication and insert malicious Lua code into session files. These files, when deserialized by the server, trigger code execution at the highest system level. One attacker created malicious session files that used certutil and to fetch and execute remote payloads. Although the attack was ultimately unsuccessful, thanks in part to Microsoft Defender, researchers noted that the intruders attempted to escalate privileges, perform reconnaissance, and create new users to maintain persistence. Another attacker reportedly had to look up how to use curl mid-attack, and one even involved a second party during the operation. This shows the persistence of attackers who are likely scanning for exposed Wing FTP instances, including those running outdated versions. Even if attackers lacked sophistication, the vulnerability remains highly dangerous. Researchers recommend upgrading to version 7.4.4 immediately, but where updates aren't possible, disabling HTTP/S access, removing anonymous login options, and monitoring session file directories are essential mitigation steps. Three additional vulnerabilities were reported: one enabling password exfiltration through JavaScript, another exposing system paths via an overlong cookie, and a third highlighting the server's lack of sandboxing. While these pose serious risks, CVE-2025-47812 has received the highest severity rating due to its potential for complete system compromise.
