Russian drone crashes in Polish field as Warsaw protests airspace violation and plans formal complaint
A Russian drone may have crashed in a field in Poland, a move the country's deputy prime minister called a "provocation," as the United States and European leaders continue to push Moscow to end its war in Ukraine. The drone hit a cornfield in the village of Osiny in the eastern Lublin province, about 62 miles from Poland's border with Ukraine, Reuters reported. Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as defense minister, said Wednesday's incident was similar to cases in which Russian drones flew into Lithuania and Romania, and could be linked to efforts to end the war in Ukraine, according to the outlet. "Once again, we are dealing with a provocation by the Russian Federation, with a Russian drone. We are dealing with it in a crucial moment, when discussions about peace (in Ukraine) are underway," Kosiniak-Kamysz told journalists. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pawel Wronski told Reuters that some experts have suggested a Russian version of the Shahed drone developed by Iran was involved in the latest incident. Polish Gen. Dariusz Malinowski said the drone had a Chinese engine and appeared to be a decoy that was designed to self-destruct. The blast shattered windows in several homes, but nobody was injured, the Polish PAP news agency reported. Police recovered burnt metal and plastic debris at the site. "I was sitting in my room at night, around midnight, maybe, and I heard something just bang," local resident Pawel Sudowski told local news website "It exploded so loudly that the whole house simply shook." On X, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said his ministry would issue a protest against the airspace violation, without naming the perpetrator. "Another violation of our airspace from the East confirms that Poland's most important mission towards NATO is the defence (sic) of our own territory," he wrote. The incident came as the Trump administration continues to broker talks between Russia and Ukraine to end the bloody three-year conflict. On Monday, Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and a group of European leaders at the White House. On Friday he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Russian drone fell in eastern Poland, Warsaw says
OSINY: A Russian drone crashed in a field in eastern Poland, according to early findings, Polish officials said on Wednesday (Aug 20), in an incident the nation's defence minister described as a provocation. The drone hit and scorched a cornfield in the village of Osiny in the eastern Lublin province overnight, just over 100 km from the Ukrainian border. Poland has been on high alert for objects entering its airspace since a stray Ukrainian missile struck a southern Polish village in 2022, killing two people. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pawel Wronski spoke to Reuters about the findings so far. Some experts have suggested that a Russian version of the Shahed drone developed by Iran was involved in the latest incident. General Dariusz Malinowski said the drone appeared to be a decoy which was designed to self-destruct. He said it had a Chinese engine. "A PROVOCATION BY THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION" Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as defence minister, said the incident bore similarities to cases in which Russian drones flew into Lithuania and Romania, and the timing could be linked to ongoing discussion to try and end the war in Ukraine. "Once again, we are dealing with a provocation by the Russian Federation, with a Russian drone. We are dealing with it in a crucial moment, when discussions about peace (in Ukraine) are underway," he told journalists. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on X his ministry would issue a protest against the airspace violation but did not name the perpetrator. "Another violation of our airspace from the East confirms that Poland's most important mission towards NATO is the defence of our own territory." The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. BLAST SHATTERED WINDOWS, NO INJURIES US President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and a group of European allies in the White House on Monday, following his meeting on Friday in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The blast shattered windows in several homes, but nobody was injured, national news agency PAP reported. Police said they found burnt metal and plastic debris at the site and that corn had been burnt in an area of 8-10 m diametre around the spot where the object fell. "I was sitting in my room at night, around midnight, maybe, and I heard something just bang," local resident Pawel Sudowski told local news website "It exploded so loudly that the whole house simply shook." Air raid sirens rang out for about an hour over the border in Ukraine's Volyn and Lviv regions from around midnight local time (2100 GMT), according to messages from its military posted on Telegram. There were no reports of air attacks in those regions, their governors said. Sine Russia's full-scale invation of Ukraine more than three years ago, there have been a number of intrusions into Polish airspace raising concern in the wider European Union and NATO.

Poland refuses to rule out 'Russian sabotage' after mystery object falls from sky and explodes near Ukraine border
Poland 's Defence Minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, stated that authorities cannot rule out the possibility that a mysterious object that exploded in eastern Poland overnight was an act of Russian sabotage. The object fell and detonated in a cornfield in the village of Osiny, located in Lublin province, near the Ukrainian border. Poland's army suggested that the debris might be a component of an old propeller engine. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said on X: '...after conducting preliminary analyses of radar system records, no violation of Polish airspace was recorded last night from either Ukraine or Belarus.' No injuries were reported, although several windows were shattered. Burnt metal and plastic debris were found at the site. A shocking video from a resident's CCTV captured the moment the object exploded into a ball of fire. Some witnesses said they were awoken by a loud bang that caused their windows to shake. Police showed up not long afterwards to investigate what had happened. The witness told local TV station Łukó 'I was woken by a loud bang that shook the windows. I looked outside but couldn't see anything. 'It wasn't until the morning that I noticed the lights of police cars. It was reported that the blast had left a huge hole at the scene. This incident adds to a series of recent events that have heightened concerns about Russian activities in Poland. In May 2024, a significant fire at the Marywilska 44 shopping centre in Warsaw was attributed to Russian intelligence services, leading Poland to close the Russian consulate in Kraków. In response, Russia closed Poland's consulate in Kaliningrad, escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations. Poland has also been dealing with a series of sabotage incidents. In July 2025, authorities charged six individuals, including three Polish citizens and three Belarusians, for conducting arson attacks allegedly on behalf of Russian and Belarusian intelligence services. These attacks, which occurred in 2023 and 2024, involved Molotov cocktails and were part of a broader effort to destabilise Poland's support for Ukraine, Poland believed. The claims were rejected by Russia and Belarus. Additionally, Polish authorities have detained 32 individuals suspected of coordinating with Russia to engage in acts of sabotage. Among them is a 27-year-old Colombian man accused of carrying out arson attacks under Russian instruction. As a neighbour of Ukraine, Poland has been concerned that Putin could order an invasion and is said to be preparing in case Russia attacks.
