Akins' Mansfield future still being 'considered'

The 36-year-old was sentenced to prison in April after pleading guilty to causing the death of a cyclist by careless or inconsiderate driving. Adrian Daniel, 33, died 10 days after he was struck by a Mercedes G350 being driven by Akins near Huddersfield in March 2022. Despite being out of contract in the summer, Akins has not been included on the League One club's list of players being released. Instead the club has said it is "continuing to consider its position" regarding the striker and added that "no further comment" will be made. Akins was a Mansfield player when the crash happened more than three years ago and continued to play for the Stags until he was jailed. Even when he pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court on 4 March, he started a league match just hours later. Following Akins' sentencing more than a month later, Stags boss Nigel Clough said the jail term came as an "unbelievable shock" to the club. In an interview with BBC Radio Nottingham, Clough said Akins future at the One Call Stadium was still being discussed. "Nothing will be decided immediately. Everybody is just digesting what was an unbelievable shock this week," the Stags boss said at the time. Meanwhile, Mansfield have triggered contract extensions for Baily Cargill, Elliott Hewitt, Aaron Lewis, Rhys Oates and Louis Reed, while Jordan Bowery, Dom Dwyer, Stephen McLaughlin, Scott Flinders and Lee Gregory remain in talks about new deals. Goalkeeper Christy Pym, who made 42 appearances this season, has been released alongside Hiram Boateng, Aden Flint, Alfie Kilgour, Calum Macdonald, Tom Nichols, Ben Quinn, Stephen Quinn and George Williams.

The cyclist was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but couldn't be saved - dying ten days later on March 27, 2022. Akins has now been jailed for a total of 14 months after admitting causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving. Savanna Daniel, Adrian's wife, told the court how her life was "changed forever" following the dad's death. She said she was alerted to the tragedy by a computer on his bike that automatically contacted her as she was Adrian's emergency contact. Savanna said she went to the scene before Adrian was taken to hospital where he sadly died 11 days later. She added: "I was told the adrenaline junkie I knew and loved wasn't coming back. On Sunday 27th, Adrian passed. "Since that day, it has been like hell and a nightmare I'm not waking up from. "I know it's happened, I'm not living in a fairytale but it was avoidable. "I was unable to talk about Adrian without falling apart. I was angry with him for leaving us. This was too simple a collision to take his life." Leeds Crown Court was told the horror unfolded on March 17, 2022, as Adrian had cycled in the village of Netherton. Akins was taking his young daughter to a piano class along with his seven-month-old baby when he approached a junction. Prosecutor Carmel Pearson said: "Traffic is obliged to give way at Huddersfield Road, which is what the defendant should have done. "He intended to turn right into Huddersfield Road. "The defendant didn't give way at a give way sign. "There is no stop sign or white line at that junction but there is an obligation to give way. The court was told that Akins had knowledge of the road so should have known to give way at the junction. In his police interview, the footballer said he did not see the cyclist. Along with his jail term, Akins was also banned from driving for two years. Sentencing, Judge Alexander Menary told the footballer: "You failed to see Mr Daniel and you drove into collision with him. "The impact was devastating and he was thrown from his bicycle. "It was apparent to the emergency workers that he had sustained grave injuries." Just hours after Akins pleaded guilty to the offence last month, he took to the pitch for Mansfield Town in a 0-0 draw vs Wigan. Manager Nigel Clough later discussed his decision to include Akins in his team, saying: "We've known about it for some time, it's not just happened but we're not in a position to comment." The striker came through the youth academy at Huddersfield and made his debut for them in 2007. In addition to his time at Hamilton and Partick, he had stints at Northwich Victoria, Tranmere Rovers and Stevenage. Akins had eight years at Burton Albion before he joined Mansfield in January 2022. He has made four international appearances for Caribbean nation Grenada, who he qualifies for through his mum. Mansfield Town today said it was "considering its position" after news of Akins' imprisonment. A spokesman said: "Mansfield Town Football Club acknowledges today's decision by Leeds Crown Court concerning Lucas Akins following a tragic road traffic accident in March 2022. "Mansfield Town Football Club offers its sincere and deepest condolences to the family of Adrian Daniel at this difficult time. "The club is considering its position with regards to Lucas and will be making no further comment at this stage." Mrs Daniel added: "He was a great father, son and husband and his legacy will always be to live life to the full."Mr Daniel, from Meltham, was cycling along Huddersfield Road in Netherton on 17 March when he was collided with Mr Akins' vehicle as the footballer pulled out in front of him at the junction with Crosland Factory court heard the crash was captured on Mr Daniel's helmet camera, and that he was not breaking the speed limit on his bike and had adopted an appropriate position in the middle of the lane. Judge Alex Menary said Akins, whose previous clubs include Huddersfield Town and Burton Albion, did not check left and right before pulling he paused for more time it would have allowed Mr Daniel to travel through any blind spot, the judge who showed no emotion as he was sentenced, was also banned from driving for 12 a statement, Mansfield Town said it was "considering its position with regards to Lucas". Mansfield footballer Lucas Akins starts League One match hours after crash death guilty plea
Mansfield Town have said they are unable to comment after striker Lucas Akins started a League One match on the same day he admitted causing the death of a cyclist. The 36-year-old played in his side's 0-0 draw with Wigan on Tuesday night hours after pleading guilty at Leeds Crown Court to causing the death of Adrian Daniel in March 2022. Mr Daniel, 33, was struck by a Mercedes G350 in Huddersfield and died 10 days later. The footballer, who has also played for Burton Albion, Stevenage and Tranmere, admitted causing Mr Daniel's death by careless or inconsiderate driving and will be sentenced on 24 April. Akins has continued to line up for Mansfield since the incident - and appeared again at his club's One Call Stadium in Tuesday evening's encounter. Mansfield manager Nigel Clough was asked about the player's involvement. He told BBC Radio Nottingham: "We can't comment on it, I'm afraid.
