The next meme stock? Timothée Chalamet named Lucid's global brand ambassador

American Eagle (AEO) has Sydney Sweeney. And now EV upstart Lucid Motors (LCID) has its own superstar. Lucid Motors announced it has signed a "multi-year partnership" with Oscar-nominated actor and "culture icon" Timothée Chalamet as the company's first-ever global brand ambassador. As part of the deal, Chalamet will star in Lucid's marketing push for the EV maker's upcoming Gravity SUV. Lucid claims the Chalamet tie-up comes as the star was spotted driving a Lucid Air sedan in 2023. "We're excited to welcome Timothée as our first Global Brand Ambassador," Akerho Oghoghomeh, senior vice president of marketing at Lucid, said in a statement. "Together, we'll show what's possible when innovation and cultural relevance come together to move the world forward." Chalamet's stardom has soared in recent years thanks to movies like the "Dune" series, "A Complete Unknown," and "Wonka." Increasingly, however, his off-screen exploits have caught mainstream attention, including his outward New York Knicks fandom, head-to-toe Chrome Hearts outfits, and relationship with fellow celeb (and beauty entrepreneur) Kylie Jenner. Lucid's connection with Chalamet comes on the heels of Sydney Sweeney's deal with American Eagle, the teen brand that has been suffering of late. Sweeney's deal to star in the brand's fall campaign (dubbed "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans") sent social media abuzz and American Eagle stock soaring last Thursday, with shares jumping 20% in pre-market trading before closing up 4.3%. While the Sweeney images and accompanying ad copy caused some controversy, the ensuing coverage coming American Eagle's way is still seen as a positive. American Eagle's CMO likened the Sweeney partnership to the denim brand's "Super Bowl." As for Lucid stock, news of Chalamet's signing hasn't lifted shares higher. Perhaps the "Dune" actor just needs better jeans. Pras Subramanian is the lead auto reporter for Yahoo Finance. You can follow him on X and on Instagram. Sign in to access your portfolio

What's Going On With Lucid Stock On Tuesday?

Lucid Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:LCID) shares edged lower on Tuesday despite unveiling a high-profile marketing shift aimed at elevating its brand appeal. The electric vehicle maker announced that award-winning actor Timothée Chalamet will serve as its first global brand ambassador, part of a broader strategy to increase cultural relevance and drive interest in its upcoming luxury SUV, the Lucid Gravity. The partnership, announced from Lucid's Newark, California headquarters, aligns with the company's 'Compromise Nothing' ethos and represents a major push to redefine what premium EV ownership looks known for his creative edge and cultural influence, will headline a global campaign for the Gravity SUV debuting this fall. However, while the branding effort grabbed headlines, investor focus may be shifting toward intensifying competition in the autonomous and EV mobility space, putting pressure on Lucid's stock. Earlier this month, Lucid revealed a joint initiative with autonomous vehicle firm Nuro and Uber Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:UBER) to develop a next-gen premium robotaxi, exclusively for Uber's ride-hailing platform. Though a strategic step, it arrives in a market that's becoming increasingly crowded and capital-intensive. Underscoring this competitive tension, today Avis Budget Group (NASDAQ:CAR) also announced a strategic partnership with Waymo to support a fully autonomous ride-hailing rollout in Dallas. Through the multi-year deal, Avis will handle Waymo's fleet infrastructure, vehicle maintenance, and depot operations, marking another major player scaling its robotaxi ambitions. With the development, the 'robotaxi' pressure is amplified as legacy automakers, tech giants, and mobility firms race to secure early dominance in the autonomous and luxury EV market. Meanwhile, Chalamet's association with Lucid traces back to 2023, when he was seen driving a Lucid Air. That casual connection evolved into a formal partnership, underpinned by shared values of style, innovation, and performance. According to Akerho 'AK' Oghoghomeh, Lucid's SVP of Marketing, Chalamet brings a 'fearless creativity' that aligns with the company's vision. The Lucid Gravity, slated for launch later this year, aims to blend luxury, technology, and practicality, offering a spacious three-row layout with the performance traits of a high-end sports car. It's the company's boldest attempt yet to capture a wider share of the electric crossover market. According to Benzinga Pro, LCID stock has lost over 25% in the past year. Investors can gain exposure to the stock via ALPS Clean Energy ETF (NYSE:ACES). Price Action: LCID shares are trading lower by 7.7% to $2.575 at last check Tuesday. Lucid Gravity Is 3 Seconds Quicker To 150 MPH Than A Corvette Z06, Even Though It Can Hold Three Times As Many People

Even if you don't go for the Sapphire version that makes 1,234 horsepower, the Lucid Air is one seriously awesome electric sedan. Unfortunately for Lucid, the U.S. is much more interested in crossovers these days. Enter the Lucid Gravity. Like with the Air, less expensive versions are coming (the 828-hp Grand Touring starts at about $95k), but the $140,000 Gravity Dream Edition makes a ridiculous 1,070 horsepower while also offering enough room for your entire immediate family. With that kind of power, you know it'll be quick, but recently, our friends at Car and Driver tested one to see just how quick it really is. In C/D's testing, the Gravity hit 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, which is seriously quick for a luxury crossover that will inevitably be used to shuttle kids to sports practice and home to many a fossilized old French fry, but it also ran the quarter-mile in a more impressive 10.6 seconds at 140 mph. For comparison, while C/D still hasn't gotten its hands on the new quad-motor Rivian R1S, it recently tested the tri-motor version and recorded a quarter-mile time of 11.1 seconds at 121 mph. The Gravity also hit 150 mph in 12.3 seconds, making it nearly three seconds quicker to 150 mph than the Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Of course, the Z06 is a track-focused version of the Corvette, and it wasn't exactly built with drag racing in mind, but still. We're talking about a mid-engine supercar that seats two versus a family crossover that seats six or seven, depending on the configuration you choose. Does anyone need a glorified electric minivan that's quicker than a Corvette Z06? Not one bit. But you can have one if you're willing to give Lucid enough money. Read more: How Much Do Car Salespeople Make? The Pay Structure Explained One Seriously Quick Bread Loaf In addition to beating the tri-motor Rivian R1S, the Gravity also beat the BMW iX M60's quarter-mile time of 11.5 seconds at 120 mph. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV also ran it in 11.5 seconds but crossed the line at only 117 mph. Then there's the Lamborghini Urus Performante, which posted an 11.2-second time at 122 mph, as well as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT and its identical 11.2-second time at 121 mph. So yeah, in case it wasn't already clear, the Gravity is ridiculously, possibly even dangerously quick. Speaking of danger, C/D has yet to test the 1,020-hp Tesla Model X Plaid, so it's possible the Gravity isn't the quickest SUV on sale right now. Then again, Tesla got rid of its PR department a while back, so maybe don't hold your breath waiting for that particular test. Especially since almost no one buys the Model X anymore. While the Gravity proved to be the quickest SUV that C/D has ever tested through the quarter-mile, that 3.1-second 0-60 mph time isn't enough to put it at the top of that particular list. In fact, the 850-hp tri-motor Rivian R1S hit 60 mph in only 2.8 seconds, even though it's down more than 200 hp. Then again, the Rivian also makes 1,103 pound-feet of torque compared to the Lucid's 909. Upgrade to the quad-motor R1S, and you get 1,025 hp and 1,198 lb-ft, so the Gravity may not hold the quarter-mile crown for long. (In Jason Cammisa's testing, the times were basically identical.) Then again, you can already get a base Rivian R1S for $76,990, while Lucid still has yet to open up the order books for the $79,900 Gravity Touring, which is perhaps the bigger deal. Currently, that's on track to happen later this year, but the way things have been going lately, who knows. Want more like this? 5 Luxury EVs That Will Have Massive Price Drops Before 2025 Ends

The prices for luxury electric vehicles are falling fast before the year ends and inventory is high. Americans will see more deals as tech changes quickly and buyers wait for improved batteries or longer ranges from new models. Lauren Fix, automotive expert at Car Coach Reports, said high MSRPs and lower demand are making price drops likely for several big-name luxury EVs. Check Out: Explore Next: Dealers may cut prices even more during the last few months of the year and around possible changes to the federal EV tax credit. Here are top EVs that will have their prices dropped before the end of 2025. Lucid Air The Lucid Air is seeing larger price drops due to soft demand and too many cars in stock. Prices for a new Lucid Air start at $69,900, but discounts are reaching up to $21,500 off for the base Pure model. Higher trims like the Grand Touring can get $31,500 in discounts, according to ArenaEV. Fix points out that the Lucid Air faces tough competition from both Tesla and new luxury EVs. According to an EVXL report, advanced technology moves fast, which means earlier models struggle to hold their value as features and ranges improve. Dealers use big incentives to beat rivals and move their inventory quickly. Trending Now: Tesla Model S The Tesla Model S is one of the best-known luxury electric sedans, but it is losing value quickly as it ages. Per Edmunds, a 2025 Model S can lose more than $66,000 in value over five years, about 60% of its original price. Fix said regular price changes from Tesla create uncertainty for resale values. The Model S has strong performance and range, but with more choices on the market, dealers have to offer bigger deals to stay competitive. Car dealers are discounting both new and used Model S sedans as newer options arrive from other brands and Tesla itself. Waiting until the end of the year could help buyers find larger discounts. Mercedes-Benz EQS The Mercedes-Benz EQS is now being offered with discounts, as more used models hit the market and fewer buyers look for pure electric luxury sedans. According to Kelley Blue Book, the Fair Purchase Price for the 2025 EQS SUV is under the $106,300 sticker price and cost-to-own estimates show significant five-year depreciation. Lease returns and cooling interest in the all-electric EQS add to the pressure. Fix said many of the first EQS sales were leases, so the market is seeing a wave of used vehicles. More supply makes it easy for buyers to ask for better prices and price cuts show dealers need to move outgoing models. Buyers interested in this sedan should look for clearance deals later in the year. BMW i7 According to Fix, rapid EV tech advancement and high sticker prices are reducing the resale demand of the BMW i7. This luxury EV was once celebrated for its advanced features, but quick changes in EV technology have made it less attractive than before. Caredge estimates nearly $70,000 lost in value over five years, showing how fast EV prices can fall. Dealers are offering deeper discounts as new models with longer range and updated tech compete for attention. Buyers can expect even bigger deals toward the end of the year, as luxury EV market competition grows. The high initial price and rapid tech change mean both new and used BMW i7s are being discounted more than traditional gas-powered rivals. Audi e-tron GT The Audi e-tron GT is a fast and stylish option, but prices are dropping as newer tech and more choices land in showrooms. Car and Driver shows the 2025 e-tron GT starts at $126,795, but dealerships are working to clear stock with incentives as demand shifts. Slow turnover means both new and used models are being marked down for buyers. Fix said Audi is adding better features and performance each year, which lowers the value of previous models. Price reductions are more likely as dealers balance stock and shoppers hold out for new upgrades or deals. Heavy discounts could be found on outgoing 2025 models.
