Yankees closer Luke Weaver goes on injured list with strained left hamstring
NEW YORK — Yankees closer Luke Weaver was placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained left hamstring sustained while warming up at Dodger Stadium last weekend, an injury that likely moves Devin Williams back into New York's closer's role. New York made six roster moves before Tuesday night's series opener against Cleveland, also activating infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. and right-hander Fernando Cruz from the injured list, recalling right-hander Yerry de los Santos from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, optioning infielder Jorbit Vivas to the RailRiders and designating right-hander Carlos Carrasco for assignment. Weaver wasn't able to pitch Sunday because of hamstring tightness he felt while stretching ahead of warming up to pitch the ninth inning during a 7-3 victory at Los Angeles . The 31-year-old right-hander is 1-1 with a 1.05 ERA and eight saves in nine chances. New York made the IL placement retroactive to Monday. Williams, who lost the closer's job in late April when he had an 11.25 ERA in 10 games, is 2-2 with a 6.23 ERA in 25 games, saving five games in six chances. Chisholm missed 28 games after a strained right oblique at Baltimore on June 29. He is hitting .181 with seven homers and 17 RBIs in 30 games and played three games for Double-A Somerset from May 29 to June 1. He'll move back to third, the position he played following his acquisition from Miami on July 27, and DJ LeMahieu will remain at second. LeMahieu made his season debut May 13 after recovering from a strained left calf sustained during spring training and is hitting .239 with one homer and five RBIs following a four-hit game in Sunday's 7-3 win at the Los Angeles Dodgers , his first since June 26, 2021. ___ AP MLB:

Report: Yankees to put closer Luke Weaver on IL with hamstring injury
Report: Yankees to put closer Luke Weaver on IL with hamstring injury Show Caption Hide Caption Yankees fans 'welcome' Juan Soto back to the Bronx in game vs. Mets New York Yankees fans made one thing clear, they do not miss Juan Soto. Sports Seriously The New York Yankees are expected to be without closer Luke Weaver for at least a month after he injured his hamstring while warming up during Sunday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. ESPN reports Weaver will be put on the injured list Tuesday and miss 4-6 weeks, which will put the Yankees' closer situation in flux once again. Weaver, who served as the Yankees closer last year during their run to the World Series, began this season as a setup man after the team acquired two-time All-Star Devin Williams in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. However, Williams struggled mightily in his introduction to New York − posting an 11.25 ERA in his first 10 appearances − and Weaver reclaimed closing duties. Weaver sports an impressive 1.05 ERA in 24 appearances this season with one win and eight saves. Williams has pitched better lately (2-0, 1 save, 1.80 ERA in his last 11 appearances) and should return to the closer's role while Weaver is out.

Report: Yanks closer Luke Weaver could miss 4-6 weeks
June 3 - New York Yankees closer Luke Weaver, who sustained a hamstring injury over the weekend, is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks, ESPN reported on Monday night. After throwing 14 pitches in one inning during an 18-2 loss to the host Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, Weaver stopped warming up to pitch the ninth inning of New York's 7-3 win on Sunday due to hamstring discomfort. New York manager Aaron Boone told reporters after the game that Weaver would undergo testing, and ESPN reported that the right-hander underwent an MRI. Per the report, the length of Weaver's absence will be determined on Tuesday. The Yankees, who lead the American League East by 5 1/2 games, open a three-game series against the visiting Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday. Weaver, 31, has excelled out of the Yankees' bullpen this season, going 1-1 with a 1.05 ERA and 0.701 WHIP in 24 games spanning 25 2/3 innings. He took over for struggling closer Devin Williams in late April and has eight saves in nine chances this season. Williams, a two-time All-Star, likely will return to the closer role. The 30-year-old right-hander has lowered his ERA from 11.25 to 6.23 with 13 scoreless outings in his last 15 appearances. For the season, the 2020 National League Rookie of the Year is 2-2 with five saves spanning 21 2/3 innings in 25 games. Right-handed reliever Fernando Cruz, 35, is slated to take Weaver's roster spot when the latter is expected to land on the injured list on Tuesday. In 21 relief appearances this season, Cruz is 1-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 23 2/3 innings. Cruz last pitched for New York on May 17 before landing on the IL due to inflammation in his pitching shoulder. --Field Level Media

Yankees closer Luke Weaver could reportedly miss 4-6 weeks with hamstring injury, potentially opening door for Devin Williams
The New York Yankees are coming out of their series against the Los Angeles Dodgers with more than just a 1-2 finish. Closer Luke Weaver has a hamstring injury and is expected to land on the injured list. That's according to ESPN's Jeff Passan, who reported on Monday that Weaver underwent an MRI that confirmed the injury. Weaver could miss 4-6 weeks, and an official timetable is expected to land on Tuesday, per the report. Advertisement Weaver was expected to finish Sunday's game that New York won, 7-3. Instead, reliever Tim Cook took the mound for the bottom of the ninth. Manager Aaron Boone revealed postgame that Weaver experienced hamstring discomfort while warming up, which ultimately prompted Monday's MRI. (New) (New York Yankees via Getty Images) The news is an obvious blow to the Yankees, who hold a 5.5-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the AL East at 36-22. Weaver, 31, is in the midst of the best season of his career. Weaver has made 24 appearances for the Yankees this season, posting a 1.05 ERA and 0.701 WHIP with 24 strikeouts and seven walks in 25 2/3 innings pitched. He has eight saves and has taken over New York's closing role since the Yankees demoted a struggling Devin Williams from the job. It's not clear if Williams or another reliever will be given the chance to take control of the role in Weaver's absence. Williams has a 6.23 ERA for the season, but has allowed just two runs in his last 11 appearances while primarily working in a setup role for Weaver.
