Mission Aviation Fellowship celebrated their 80th anniversary at Dumfries Baptist Church in Dumfries

As part of the celebrations, a Cessna aeroplane was brought from Glasgow to the church car park where visitors also enjoyed using a flight simulator to get a feel for what it's like to be a MAF pilot. The 80th anniversary of the Mission Aviation Fellowship was celebrated in Dumfries on Sunday. The movement was founded after World War II when members sought to use aviation as a force for good instead of destruction. Inspired by their Christian faith, the founders of Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) decided to use their wartime flying and engineering skills to deliver help, hope and healing to the world's most isolated people and 80 years on, their work is supported by many churches, including Dumfries Baptist Church. ‌ Passers-by may have been surprised to see a plane in the church centre car park on Sunday, brought on a trailer from Glasgow by MAF's church engagement coordinator, James Petticrew, who took part in the morning service. ‌ Through short talks and videos, he described how MAF now flies light aircraft in 25 countries, serving more places than any other airline in the world. Working in partnership with over 2,000 organisations, MAF can survey damage from the air within hours of a disaster, then deliver supplies and skilled workers, or evacuate aid workers from conflict zones, supplying food and healthcare. MAF also works in peace-keeping and education, and has vacancies at present, so if you have a Christian faith, a sense of adventure, and skills in school teaching, IT, administration, management or aviation, check out MAF's website. During a bring and share lunch, many of the children − and adults − tried using a flight simulator to get a feel for what it's like to be a MAF pilot, landing on desert and jungle airstrips, roads and lakes, wherever remote communities need practical or spiritual help.

514 MAF personnel, veterans awarded diplomas under R-PEL this year

SUNGAI BULOH: A total of 514 Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) personnel and veterans have been awarded the Malaysian Skills Diploma this year through the Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (R-PEL) programme. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin stated that the R-PEL initiative was introduced by the Ex-Servicemen Affairs Corporation (PERHEBAT) in 2017, allowing MAF personnel and veterans to obtain a diploma upon completing their service. According to him, R-PEL is a certification programme in collaboration with the Skills Development Department that recognises the experience, skills, and achievements of MAF veterans during their service, based on the National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS). He said that MAF veterans can continue to contribute to the nation through various other means. 'The development of human capital and the socio-economic wellbeing of MAF veterans must be treated as a strategic priority that deserves serious attention,' he said when officiating the Malaysian Skills Diploma Award Ceremony under the R-PEL programme and the PERHEBAT Certificate presentation at Sungai Buloh Camp here today. Mohamed Khaled stated that PERHEBAT will continue to provide training, exposure, and skill development as part of its efforts to assist soon-to-retire MAF personnel, adding that this year alone, 3,473 MAF personnel nationwide completed transition training. He also urged PERHEBAT to ensure MAF veterans can live independently, securely and productively by providing robust and effective transition training. 'PERHEBAT must also enhance its engagement with the industry and job market and transform itself into a more agile, transparent and performance-driven institution,' he added. Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry, in a statement, said that Mohamed Khaled is expected to witness the signing of eight memoranda and notes of understanding between PERHEBAT and industry partners today in areas such as job placement, entrepreneurship opportunities, and training programmes. 'These MoUs and NoUs involve Boustead Petroleum Marketing (BHPetrol), the Johor Royal Military Force, Maxis Broadband, TAB Security, Kamatech Automotive & Engineering, Hexide Engineering, AMS Caddy Academy, and Nur Lembah Pangsun Eco Resort,' read the statement.

Armed Forces Starlight III humanitarian mission returns from Myanmar

SUBANG: The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) Starlight III team returned home on Sunday (June 1) night after completing a 38-day humanitarian mission in Myanmar following a major earthquake there on March 28. Two air force A400 aircraft carrying 69 personnel, comprising officers and personnel of various specialisations including the Forward Anaesthesia and Surgical Team (FAST), the Royal Engineers Regiment (RAJD), and Safety Team, landed at the Subang Air Base at 8.30pm. The official welcoming ceremony was officiated by the armed forces headquarters Chief of Staff Lt Gen Datuk Azhan Md Othman in recognition of the team's dedication and sacrifice in carrying out the humanitarian mission under the Malaysian Field Hospital banner. Also present were armed forces health services director-general Lt Gen Datuk Dr Zulkeffeli Mat Jusoh, air operations commander Lt Gen Datuk Masro Kaliwon, and joint forces headquarters Chief of Staff, Maj Gen Datuk Mohamed Fauzi Kamis. The MAF in a statement said Operation Starlight III reflected Malaysia's concern and solidarity with the people of Myanmar affected by the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Sagaing and five other regions, followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock that was also felt in neighbouring countries including Thailand. The humanitarian mission was led by Col Dr Ahmad Farhan Ahmad Fuad as operations commander. It was officially activated on April 18 when the team was deployed to Sagaing to establish the field hospital. The field hospital began full operations on April 21, providing Level 2 medical services to local residents affected by the natural disaster. It treated 3,562 patients and conducted 493 surgical procedures, demonstrating the MAF's efficiency and compassion in delivering emergency medical aid in disaster zones. - Bernama

Over 10,000 join LTAT night run in Putrajaya

PUTRAJAYA: Over 10,000 participants gathered at Dataran Wawasan here last night for the Larian Wira LTAT 2025 - Night Run, organised by the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT) to honour the service and sacrifices of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) personnel. Held for the first time at night, the event featured three race categories, namely 5km (Fun Run), 10km, and 21.1km (Half Marathon) - under the theme 'Demi Wira Kami'. This year's edition also drew attention with the participation of 22 children with special needs from the Incredible Warrior Club in the 5km Fun Run segment. The run was also held in support of the Tabung Pahlawan Campaign, organised by the Veteran Affairs Department, to raise funds for veterans in need, including those who are ailing, disabled, and elderly individuals living alone. LTAT chief executive officer Mohammad Ashraf Md Radzi said the event not only aimed to recognise the contributions of MAF personnel, but also served as a platform to bring them closer to the public. 'One of the most effective ways to bridge the gap between the military and the public is through events like this. It creates space for interaction and fosters greater appreciation for the sacrifices made by our armed forces,' he told reporters at the event. Mohammad Ashraf said while more than 10,000 participants registered officially, many others joined as walk-ins or ran unregistered alongside family members, bringing the estimated total turnout to between 11,000 and 12,000 people. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief of Army Lt Gen Datuk Tengku Muhammad Fauzi Tengku Ibrahim, who is also an LTAT board member, said the event is part of ongoing efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle among Malaysians. 'On behalf of the MAF, I wish to thank LTAT for organising this event. Furthermore, 1,000 complimentary slots were provided to MAF personnel - a gesture of meaningful support,' he said. He added that various branches of the MAF also enlivened the event through exhibitions and outreach efforts, particularly to raise awareness among youths on career opportunities in the regular and reserve forces. 'The MAF is not only the nation's bastion of defence, but society also plays a vital role. That is why we emphasise the concept of comprehensive defence, which involves all layers of the community,' he said.
