Miri Airport upgrade projects 29 pct complete, ahead of schedule, says S'wak Transport Minister

Lee (right) inspects the progress of the upgrading projects at Miri Airport, joined by Mohd Jauhari (second left). MIRI (May 30): The five major infrastructure upgrade projects at Miri Airport are now 29 per cent completed – 15 per cent ahead of schedule, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. He said the upgrades are part of efforts to improve passenger comfort, operational efficiency, and future capacity at the airport. Speaking to reporters after chairing a meeting with Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAHB) Miri today, Lee said the ongoing projects include the renovation and refurbishment of passenger toilets, expected to be completed by Dec 23, 2025. Other upgrades include the replacement of escalators at the public concourse and arrival hall. The replacement of air conditioning and mechanical ventilation (ACMV) ducting is set to be completed and operational by mid-July 2025, while the rehabilitation works on the concrete slab at Apron Bay 1 are expected to finish by Feb 19, 2026. Additionally, the installation, testing and commissioning of a Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB) equipped with a Visual Docking Guidance System (VDGS) is expected to be completed by June 30, 2025. Lee also shared that the Public Works Department (JKR) has started preliminary design work for the proposed terminal expansion, with the initial study expected to conclude by November this year. Detailed design work is scheduled to commence in 2026. To further enhance the airport's appearance and passenger experience, Lee has proposed repainting the terminal building, which is now over 20 years old. As the ongoing works may cause temporary inconvenience, Lee urged airport users to exercise caution while navigating the terminal. 'Signage has been installed, and more will be added to help guide passengers during the upgrade period. 'I'm pleased that all the projects we've advocated are now underway. These improvements are essential, especially since Miri Airport has handled over two million passengers annually since 2013,' he added. Lee emphasises the government's commitment to preparing Miri Airport for future growth, while ensuring comfort and safety for all users. Also present at the press conference was Miri Airport manager Mohd Jauhari Abdullah. Lee Kim Shin Miri Airport upgrading projects

Govt aims for all ports to transition to B20 biodiesel, says Johari

SEPANG: The government is targeting all ports nationwide currently using B10 palm-based biodiesel in their operations to transition to B20 biodiesel, says Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani (pic). The Plantation and Commodities Minister said the initiative would support the country's efforts to meet its goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity based on gross domestic product by 45% by 2030 and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. 'In the future, I want to see every port, like Penang Port, Port Klang, Tanjung Pelepas Port, Johor Port and Kuantan Port, start using B20 biodiesel in their operations. We are currently collecting statistics, and based on that data, we will be able to determine the operational costs involved,' he told reporters after launching the B20 Use Pilot Project for Ground Service Vehicles and Machinery at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here yesterday, Bernama reported. He said the government had already begun pilot projects for the use of B20 biodiesel in Langkawi, Labuan and Sarawak in 2020, and now at KLIA for ground service vehicles and machinery. Johari said the move is to create a catalyst for national change in the use of green energy. He noted that the initiative not only supports Malaysia's transition towards sustainable energy, but also strengthens the country's position as the world's second largest producer of palm oil, which is committed to responsible and proactive practices. 'This is one of the government's key initiatives because we've made a commitment to the world that we intend to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,' he said. According to Johari, the project is being implemented through a strategic collaboration between the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), PETRONAS Dagangan Bhd, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and Syarikat Teras Kembang Sdn Bhd. He said PETRONAS Dagangan serves as the B20 biodiesel supplier, while MAHB is the airport operator. He added that Syarikat Teras Kembang manages the petrol stations supplying B20 biodiesel to operators of ground service vehicles and machinery at KLIA. 'This launch is a historic milestone as it marks the first time B20 biodiesel has been introduced for the ground service sector or the industrial sector at airports in Malaysia,' he said. B20 is a blend of 20% palm methyl ester (PME) and 80% petroleum diesel. It is seen as contributing to sustainability and reducing the use of fossil-based fuels, as well as reducing the use of GHG that causes global warming.

Efficiency, teamwork factors contributing to Malaysia's success in hosting 46th ASEAN Summit

PUTRAJAYA — The outstanding efficiency, unwavering dedication, and seamless teamwork demonstrated by all parties involved were the main factors in Malaysia's success as the host of the 46th ASEAN Summit recently, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said everything went smoothly as a result of the extraordinary commitment from the government machinery, including the people who understood Malaysia's needs in organising the summit. 'I saw at all levels, our children, civil servants, all of them were great. From the airport, the parade, the police, immigration, MAHB (Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd), the management at the hotel, the Foreign Ministry, which coordinated, to the Prime Minister's Department, which managed the protocol. 'I am also clueless about protocol, but I respect what the officers instructed the prime minister to do. I did as told (protocol), why? Because we are a country that has rules and works as a team,' he said in his address at the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly here today. It was attended by both Deputy Prime Ministers, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. The 46th ASEAN Summit concluded on May 27 after a series of high-level meetings aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and strategic partnerships. During the two-day summit, ASEAN leaders participated in several important meetings, including the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit, the first ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, and the 16th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand (IMT-GT) Growth Triangle Summit. Anwar also touched on cooperation between ASEAN leaders in making collective decisions without compromising the interests of their respective countries. '… then we have to decide on an understanding in dealing with President Trump's (US President Donald Trump's) tariffs. Each country has its own strategy, which will involve bilateral relations. But we also want to protect the interests of the more than 650 million population of ASEAN countries. '… there is not a decision by Malaysia that is detrimental to another country, or by Vietnam (for example) that is detrimental to another country. We work as a team,' he said. Malaysia, as the ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', hosted the 46th ASEAN Summit, marking the fifth time the country has held the chairmanship after 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. — BERNAMA
