Fans 'devastated' as 'brilliant' ITV crime drama set to end after 11 series

ITV has confirmed that one of its popular and long-running crime dramas is set to end. Grantchester, which follows a clergyman who helps investigate crimes in a small village, will end after its 11th series. Filming for the final season will begin this month, with Rishi Nair reprising the role of vicar Alphy Kottaram alongside Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, played by Robson Green. Both Nair and Green have said it was "an honour" to star in the beloved show. We're headed back to #GrantchesterPBS for one last adventure! 🔍 It's with happy tears that we announce that Grantchester has begun production on its 11th and final season. ❤️ We're so grateful to all the loyal viewers and can't wait to bring you the final chapter of this story. — MASTERPIECE | PBS (@masterpiecepbs) July 8, 2025 Grantchester fans are still waiting for series 10 to be released, with it premiering on PBS in the U.S on Sunday, June 15. A UK release date for Grantchester season 10 has not been revealed, but it has now been confirmed that series 11 will be its last. Rishi Nair plays vicar Alphy Kottaram, who helps to investigate crimes in the small village of Grantchester, in Cambridgeshire, alongside Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, played by Robson Green. Happy Valley star James Norton previously starred as the village's vicar, Sidney Chambers, from 2014 to 2019, before Tom Brittney joined as the new vicar, Will Davenport, who was later replaced by Nair's character. It has gained many fans over the years, with one person on IMDb describing it as a "brilliantly written and acted" show. In the final series, Alphy will learn more about his past and will continue to get to know the bishop's daughter, Meg. Elsewhere, the chief superintendent comes to Geordie with a tempting offer that could also mean an end to his crime-solving partnership with Alphy. The show is adapted from the Grantchester Mysteries novels by James Runcie and was developed for TV by Coulman. Green thanked "everyone who has been part of this incredible journey", adding: "It has been an honour to share in the magic of Grantchester, and I am forever grateful for the memories, the friendships, and the love that this journey has given me. I hope I made you proud." Nair also thanked all the cast and crew, and said "it's been the greatest honour to step into the world of Grantchester and be part of a show with so much heart". On the show's end, writer, series creator and executive producer Daisy Coulam said: At its heart, Grantchester is a show about the power of friendship and love. "For over a decade now, cast and crew (many who've been there since the beginning) have met each summer to film. And it's been an absolute joy. "Thank you to James Runcie for entrusting us with his characters. Thank you to the lovely people of real Grantchester. Thank you to everyone who's been a part of the show in any way, big or small. I'll miss you terribly." Following the news, many fans were sad to hear of the show's end. One said: "Nooo, please, this is devastating. This was my comfort show. We need a Leonard spin-off!" Another added: "I've been complaining that the seasons are too short, and here you are ending the series." Outlander's Richard Rankin lands next role in ‘flawless' drama after wrapping final season

The Forsytes is expected to be Richard Rankin's first new role since wrapping up the time-travel historical drama Outlander is set to conclude with its eighth series, and the renowned cast are already securing their future roles. Richard Rankin, known for his role as Roger MacKenzie in all but the first series of the successful Starz show, has recently signed on to a much-anticipated adaptation of a cherished classic. ‌ Ahead of the premiere of the first series, 5 and Masterpiece have confirmed this week that a second series of Debbie Horsfield's The Forsytes is already underway. ‌ Featuring Millie Gibson, famed for Doctor Who, and Downton Abbey's Tuppence Middleton, this reinterpretation of John Galsworthy's classic book series The Forsyte Saga will premiere on 5 later this year. American viewers will be able to watch next year on MASTERPIECE on PBS, with a second series already being filmed in and around Bristol, reports the Scottish Daily Express. Rankin is the latest television veteran to join the cast for the sequel, alongside Jonathan Creek's Sarah Alexander and Nia Ashi, the rising star from Bob Marley: One Love. Returning cast members include Middleton and Gibson, as well as Eleanor Tomlinson, Francesca Annis, Jack Davenport, Tom Durant Prichard, Naomi Frederick, Jamie Flatters, Danny Griffin, Owen Igiehon, Eleanor Jackson, Justine Moore, Stephen Moyer and Joshua Orpin. Susan Hampshire, an Emmy Award-winning actress who starred in the classic BBC version of the drama from the 1960s, will also feature. ‌ Outlander sensation Rankin is all set to dazzle audiences with his first major project since bidding farewell to the hit series, as it gears up for what's promised to be an electrifying eighth and final season next year. The up-and-coming second instalment of The Forsytes teases: "In this next chapter the proud dynasty faces a new era of scandal, ambition, and shifting loyalties. "As love, legacy and reputation collide, the cracks in the family's polished façade grow ever deeper." ‌ Paul Testar, Commissioning Editor of Drama at Channel 5, shared his excitement: "We are excited to announce that production has begun on the second series of The Forsytes. ‌ "With the first series set to air soon, this early commitment to a second chapter is a testament to the strength of the stories and characters that we know our audience will embrace. We look forward to sharing even more of this rich and compelling series." Mammoth Screen's CCO Damien Timmer added: "We can't wait for the world to see series 1 of The Forsytes, and we're so pleased to be getting ahead of ourselves and starting on this thrilling second series with Debbie Horsfield's irresistible scripts and our glorious – and ever expanding - cast." The Forsyte Saga, once turned into a 2002 and 2003 television hit featuring Gina McKee and Damian Lewis, is undergoing a modern makeover, promising ITV audiences another period drama phenomenon. Ratings and reviews from IMDb already laud the series as "engrossing" and "flawless", hinting at a forthcoming spectacle bound to captivate period drama aficionados. The Forsytes season 1 will be released later this year on 5 and in 2026 on MASTERPIECE on PBS. Outlander is available to stream on MGM+ via Prime Video.
