Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupé lands in South Africa
The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupé is now officially available in South Africa. Recently seen flexing its muscle at the 2025 Simola Hillclimb in Knysna — where it claimed class honours in the road and supercar category — this German bahn-stormer is driven by a 4.0l twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine producing 450kW and 850Nm, paired with a 150kW/320Nm electric motor. Combined, the powertrain delivers a staggering 600kW and 1,420Nm of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission and fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ system. Mercedes-AMG claims a 0—100km/h sprint time of just 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 320km/h. On the more sensible end of the spectrum, the GT 63 S E Performance also offers an electric-only range of up to 13km, thanks to its F1-derived 400V, 6.1kWh battery. Connected to a 3.7kW onboard charger, it can be recharged using a household socket, wall box or public charging station. Adding more clever tech into the mix is the AMG Dynamic Select system, offering eight driving modes: Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Sport+, Race and Individual. These can be selected via the AMG button and central display on the centre console or through the AMG steering wheel controls. Each mode tweaks the behaviour of the powertrain, gearbox, steering, damping, and exhaust note. Drivers can also toggle between four levels of energy recuperation — one of which allows for near 'one-pedal' driving. Other performance-focused features include active aerodynamic aids, such as a deployable rear spoiler and a concealed underbody flap that improve downforce at speed. AMG Active Ride Control with semiactive roll stabilisation and rear-axle steering further boost agility and stability across various driving conditions. Braking duties are handled by a ceramic high-performance composite system: six-piston fixed calipers and 420mm rotors up front, and single-piston floating calipers with 380mm discs at the rear. Wrapping these are 20" AMG 10-spoke alloy wheels fitted with high-performance tyres (295/35 front and 305/35 rear), with forged 21" wheels available as an option. Inside, the GT 63 S E Performance is as luxurious as it is potent. Standard features include a fully digital instrument cluster, an 11.9" portrait-orientated touchscreen running the latest MBUX infotainment system, and exclusive AMG Performance and Track Pace apps for telemetry and lap-time logging. Occupants are treated to Nappa leather sports seats, carbon-fibre interior trim, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an ergonomic AMG Performance multifunction steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and active steering and lane-keeping assist. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupé is priced from R4,369,287, which includes a standard five-year/100,000km service and maintenance plan.

Mercedes Maybach: Monogrammed mastery
(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today Spice issue dated April 2025)In a stately setting in Udaipur, as the black and white, open-top, two-seater SL 680 Monogram Series rolled out, in the presence of global media, Mercedes-Maybach declared that only three units of the car had been allotted to the Indian market. At a hefty `4.2 crore price tag, it is quite likely that these three units are the season's most coveted pieces. At India Today Spice, the Maybach models that we've previously driven have conclusively been passenger cars. But this two-seater is one hundred per cent a driver's the bat, I've always been a fan of the upright bonnet star and this model features it, complimenting the chrome fin, while the double-scoop silhouette behind the seats gives it a striking, aerodynamic the Maybach motif printed all over the bonnet, it appears that Maybach's designers are taking a slightly different turn from their otherwise subtly placed brand logos in other models. Although, the Maybach motif that illuminates as well as the rose gold headlights do add a luxe touch to the overall appearance. The soft top too bears the Maybach logo, subtly imprinted in anthracite. Once inside, I love what the carmaker is calling the White Ambience, the two-tone black and white design leitmotif that runs through the car. I'd like to use the word ensconced, to describe the feeling of sitting on the handcrafted, white Nappa leather seats with a subtle Maybach motif. The cabin with its cheery blend of white and silver trims is impressive, as is the sporty digital instrument cluster that looms in front of you as a gentle reminder of the car's capabilities. Also, included is an adjustable centre display, which features the manufacturer's trusty MBUX user There's certainly a lot of sporty heft under the hood, with a 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine, which pumps out a massive 585 bhp of power, which can take the two-seater to a top speed of 260 kmph. The claimed 0-100 kmph sprint is 4.1 seconds. To coddle the nitpicky driver even more, the car even comes with a sound-optimised exhaust system and an enhanced insulation mechanism when the roof is down. The carmaker promises a highly refined and stable drive experience under multiple conditions thanks to the rear-axle steering and an excellent suspension we may have come a long way from Maybach's emblematic Zeppelins to the SL 680 today, evolving through a slew of indulgent saloons in recent years, the head-turning effect, the commitment to bespoke craftsmanship and the philosophy of sporty driving experiences remains Rs. 4.2 crore (ex-showroom)Availability: Since March 2025Subscribe to India Today Magazine

New Mercedes CLA is a game changer for electric cars
SPONSORED BY NEXT The Independent's Electric Vehicles Channel is sponsored by Next. Mercedes has leapfrogged its EV rivals with the launch of Europe's longest-range new EV – the CLA saloon. The new CLA also marks a change in strategy for Mercedes. Rather than have different line-ups for electric cars – badged EQ – the CLA is available as an EV with two versions and a full hybrid with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and small battery. In a further twist, Mercedes has said that both petrol and EV models should be priced similarly. Mercedes says the new CLA is the first in a new family of vehicles that will offer electric and hybrid versions and says it's the cleverest car the brand has ever made – it comes with a new in-house operating system powering an in-car supercomputer, linked to Mercedes' Intelligent Cloud. The star of the show is the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology, which promises hugely impressive energy efficiency figures of 5 miles per kWh of power used. That means a potential range of just under 500 miles, which should make it the longest-range car on sale when it arrives in showrooms later this year. The new model's efficiency means a relatively small battery of 85kWh can be fitted, while 800v technology also means fast charging at speeds up to 320kW allowing the CLA 250+ to add over 200 miles of range in just ten minutes. The lithium-ion batteries have the latest technology to improve energy density, while the usual single-speed automatic gearbox is replaced by a two-speed unit – again allowing for greater efficiency at higher speeds and in urban traffic. A new form of heat pump also improves efficiency in cold weather. The new Mercedes-Benz operating system features over-the-air updates that can improve the entire car, including the vehicle software and driver assistance systems. Mercedes has also worked with Google and Microsoft on AI support as part of the latest Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), with a new MBUX Virtual Assistant said to be easier to talk to and even empathetic. It'll not only activate car functions but also answer random questions. The Mercedes Superscreen extends across the entire width of the cabin, with a 10.25-inch driver display, a 14-inch central infotainment screen and an optional 14-inch screen in front of the passenger with streaming apps built in for entertainment. MBUX is said to offer a new level of personalisation in the car, while Surround Navigation – based on Google Maps – can provide a 3D representation of the car in its surroundings and also show other road users. The very latest driver assistance features are on board, too, including Assist at different levels with the latest autonomous driving and parking technology, which can be updated over the air. As well as the CLA 250+ with its potential 492-mile range and 0-62mph time of 6.7 seconds, a CLA 350 4Matic with four-wheel drive will also be available, cutting the 0-62mph time to 4.9 seconds and the range down to a still impressive 479 miles. Although the CLA 350 comes with four-wheel drive, it runs in two-wheel drive mode for most of the time, activating the motor on the front axle when more grip or more performance is needed. A new brake-by-wire system with different levels of energy recuperation also helps to boost efficiency. Bi-directional charging will also become available, enabling the CLA to put power back into the home if needed. The slippery shape of the new CLA has an ultra-low drag efficient of just 0.21 with particular work done to make the wheels more aerodynamic, both in terms of their shape and the air flow around them. Similarly joints around the headlights and grille have been partially sealed, while the underbody is almost completely closed. The grille itself does without harmful chrome, using lighting to gently illuminate the Mercedes-Benz star pattern with 142 separate stars to reinterpret a traditional grille. Mercedes is also promising new levels of safety with the first centre airbag in this size of car, a new high-voltage protection system with additional structural protection for the battery, plus the expected plethora of advanced driver safety systems. Inside the new CLA there's more room than before despite the slippery fastback shape, while there's a 405-litre boot and an additional 'frunk' under the bonnet with 101 litres of space. And as you'd expect, the interior is packed full of sustainable materials, including seats made from recycled fabrics. As usual, there will be plenty of options, including a 3D Burmester audio system with 16-speakers and Dolby Atmos. The 'Sound Experience' offers a number of different noise themes to cover everything from starting to driving and parking. There's no word yet on pricing or exact on-sale dates, but we'd expect the CLA to have to be competitive with its biggest rival – the Tesla Model 3 – with a price starting somewhere in the mid £40,000s.
