Sarawak launches Sustainability Blueprint 2030
KUCHING: Sarawak has become the first state in Malaysia to launch a Sustainability Blueprint 2030, marking a major step towards building a greener and more sustainable future. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the blueprint, developed by the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty), features 10 strategic thrusts, 48 strategies and 111 action plans. 'This comprehensive document, meticulously crafted and recently finalised by our MEESty, serves as our strategic roadmap for Sarawak's profound transition to a green economy. 'The Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 encompasses every facet of our sustainability agenda, designed to integrate green principles into the very fabric of our society and economy,' he said in his keynote address at the Asia Carbon Conference 2025 here today. He said the blueprint sets a strong example for environmental action at the state level. Abang Johari said the strategic roadmap for Sarawak's profound transition to a green economy also outlines the state's commitment to accelerating the renewable energy transition, advancing carbon capture and storage, as well as enhancing forest and land conservation. It includes promoting green industries and investments, building sustainable cities through circular economy practices and developing a future-ready workforce through education, skills and research. Looking ahead, he said Sarawak has pledged to publish a comprehensive Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory report by 2027 to track the state's emissions and stay within its carbon budget. Meanwhile, he said the Sarawak government is finalising its own Carbon Plan aimed at facilitating carbon market investments in the state. 'The Carbon Plan is pivotal to offer a detailed implementation framework designed to catalyse carbon trading and foster a vibrant carbon market. 'Central to the Carbon Plan is its focus on establishing a well-regulated and investor-friendly carbon market that balances supply and demand, thereby incentivising emissions reductions and attracting green investments to Sarawak,' he added.

Dr Hazland delivering his opening remarks. – photo by Aileen Yap KUCHING (May 13): Sarawak is taking centre stage in the global hydrogen agenda with bold ambition and strategic clarity as the Hydrogen Economy Forum (H2EF) 2025 kicks off today, calling for international collaboration, innovation, and climate action. Sarawak Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, who is also H2EF 2025 chairperson, said the forum marks a pivotal moment as the world grapples with the twin forces of climate crisis and rapid technological change. 'Hydrogen has emerged not just as an alternative energy source, but as a transformative solution. 'It is changing the way we think about energy — how we produce it, how we store it and how we utilise it. 'Its potential to fuel cleaner, more resilient and more inclusive economies is extraordinary, and we are only just beginning,' he said during his opening speech at a hotel here today. Dr Hazland highlighted Sarawak's strategic advantages — its vast landmass, rich biodiversity, and abundant hydropower potential — as key factors in its emergence as a regional hydrogen hub. He noted that 62 per cent of the state's 12.5 million hectares remain forested, with more than 300 rivers offering untapped opportunities for renewable energy development, including floating solar projects with a projected potential of up to three gigawatts. Dr Hazland credited Sarawak's leadership under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for its bold vision and political will to explore green technologies through the state's Post-covid Development Strategy 2030 and four-pronged policy framework — covering legal, technical, financial, and human resources talent development. 'This forum is more than a conference. It is a platform for ambition, collaboration, and action. 'Sarawak is ready to lead, to partner, and to shape a sustainable hydrogen future,' he added. ‘Rich renewable resources, strategic location put Sarawak at high advantage'
Mats de Ronde KUCHING (May 6): Sarawak's abundant renewable resources and strategic location position it strongly to become a regional leader in the hydrogen economy, according to global energy expert Mats de Ronde. De Ronde, who is energy markets and strategy lead at global risk management firm DNV, also said the state has the capacity to meet its own energy needs, while exploring options such as clean hydrogen production and renewable energy exports. His comments come ahead of his scheduled appearance at the Hydrogen Economy Forum (H2EF) 2025, to be taking place held at Hilton Kuching from May 13 to 14. He stressed that while hydrogen holds significant promise in the global push for decarbonisation, unlocking its full potential will require coordinated progress across technology development, financing, and supportive policy frameworks. 'It's easy to get caught up in the hype, but we must be pragmatic as hydrogen is not the only path to decarbonisation. Planning the necessary infrastructure now, while keeping an eye on short-term opportunities, is essential. 'We're now looking at hydrogen for power generation, transport, and as a globally traded commodity. The entrance of Chinese manufacturers has increased competition, which is driving rapid technological improvements and lowering costs. 'But scaling up the market is still a major hurdle. 'Countries with strong renewable energy resources, such as China and those in Europe, are leading the way, but government involvement is crucial as they need to act as facilitators by reducing market barriers and supporting the development of shared infrastructure,' he said in a statement yesterday. As the hydrogen market evolved, he said new business models should emerge, with a potential shift from traditional point-to-point trade to more dynamic spot markets. For companies eyeing the hydrogen sector, de Ronde advised a balanced approach – one accounting for technical and regulatory risks, and prioritising markets with supportive policies and credible demand. H2EF 2025 is hosted by the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty), and jointly organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia (Mosti) and Borneo Business Connect, with support from Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak). Sarawak delegation conducts benchmarking visit to National Environment Agency in Singapore
The delegation in a photocall during the visit to NEA in Singapore KUCHING (May 6): A 22-member delegation from the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and the Ministry for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) recently conducted a benchmarking visit to the National Environment Agency (NEA) in Singapore. The delegation was led by the Controller of Environmental Quality Sarawak Datu Jack Liam and MEESty's Development and Sustainability Division head Elizabeth Dato Nyomek. Also participating in the visit were representatives from Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (Sains). According to a statement by NREB, the visit aimed to strengthen Sarawak's capabilities in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions monitoring, data management and analysis, regulatory enforcement, and the adoption of waste-to-energy (WTE) solutions. 'It forms part of the broader strategy to implement the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance, 2023 and support Sarawak's aspiration to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. 'The main objectives of the visit were to understand NEA's Emission Data Monitoring and Analysis (EDMA) system for managing and monitoring GHG emissions and to gain insights into enforcement and compliance mechanisms related to GHG emissions. 'It also aimed to explore waste-to-energy technologies and operations at the TuasOne Waste-To-Energy (WTE) Plant and foster collaboration between NEA and NREB in strengthening regulatory frameworks in Sarawak,' the statement said. Throughout the two-day programme, the delegation engaged in in-depth knowledge sharing with NEA on regulatory frameworks, reporting requirements, EDMA system and third-party emissions verification. In addition to the sessions with NEA, the delegation toured the TuasOne WTE Plant, where they were briefed on the plant's incineration process, air pollution control, and energy generation system. The visit concluded with a technical discussion with Horsol Switz Engineering Asia Pte Ltd, during whivh delegates further explored the technical and economic aspects of WTE implementation. NREB also stated that discussions highlighted how such facilities contribute to landfill reduction and energy recovery, supporting circular economy principles. 'With the insights gained, NREB is taking proactive steps to enhance its GHG monitoring, reporting and enforcement strategies in alignment with global standards,' the statement said. NREB said the benchmarking visits helped develop a deeper understanding of emissions governance, data management, and WTE technologies. It reaffirmed Sarawak's commitment to fostering international collaboration, knowledge exchange, and policy innovation in addressing climate change and environmental sustainability.
