Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow highlight men's mental health

Buchanan Galleries has partnered with five charities and health organisations to promote men's physical and mental wellbeing as part of Men's Health Week, running from June 9 to 15. Each organisation will take over a dedicated space beneath the flower wall outside John Lewis & Partners for a day, offering information, support, and a chance to start important conversations. "We aim to create an accessible, supportive space for men, who may not typically seek health advice or services, and bring these opportunities directly to them in a familiar, everyday setting. "We know that taking that first step can often be the hardest, so by offering visibility and access to these brilliant charities and organisations in a relaxed environment, we hope to make it easier for men to start important conversations about their health and wellbeing. "It's a small but meaningful way we can help reduce stigma and encourage more positive, proactive approaches to men's health in our community." Each charity will be present at the centre from 10am to 4pm. On Monday, June 9, MindTheMen, a suicide prevention and mental health support group, will launch the week. The next day will see MENSELF+ introduce its MOT 4 MEN health check programme. (Image: Supplied) Jim Malcomson, programme coordinator at MENSELF+, said: "We're thrilled to be bringing our MOT 4 MEN programme to guests at Buchanan Galleries. "The service is a unique health initiative that encourages men to think about their wellbeing like they would their car - through regular check-ups and maintenance. 'By creating a relaxed, non-medical environment with a bit of humour, the programme breaks down barriers and helps men take positive, proactive steps toward better physical and mental health.' On Wednesday, June 11, Men Matter Scotland will share its work around peer support and suicide prevention. Martin Melly, operations manager at Men Matter Scotland, said: "Men Matter Scotland is looking forward to coming to Buchanan Galleries and taking part in this initiative. "We aim to improve men's mental health and wellbeing through peer-to-peer support so getting the opportunity to raise awareness amongst the local population in Glasgow of our service is vital." Thursday, June 12, will see the Terrence Higgins Trust offering guidance on sexual health and HIV support. Alison Wright, chief executive of Prostate Scotland, said: "We're proud to be taking part in this week of action to help shine a light on men's health. "Too often, men put off speaking up about health concerns - especially when it comes to prostate issues. "By bringing our information and support directly into a busy public space like Buchanan Galleries, we hope to make it that bit easier for men to get informed, ask questions, and feel more confident about taking charge of their health."

Top food critic delivers verdict on the massive Stockport Pyramid curry buffet

Top food critic Jay Rayner has given his verdict on the Royal Nawaab Stockport. After writing for the Observer for 25 years, he recently moved to the Financial Times, and has dined in some of the finest restaurants in the country. And in his latest column for the broadsheet paper, published today (June 7), Rayner described his visit to Stockport's newest and flashiest curry buffet. READ MORE: Exact time the Red Arrows will fly over the North West this afternoon READ MORE: Discounts and a deserted car park - what's going on with the Trafford Centre's Premium Parking? The gargantuan restaurant and events space opened its doors to much fanfare in April of this year. The pyramid itself, formerly occupied by the Co-Op bank, underwent an enormous renovation to the tune of some £15 million, with an aesthetic Rayner describes as 'classy cruise ship'. The M.E.N's Adam Maidment visited the restaurant on its soft opening and praised the food and decor - even if the enormous scale and bustling crowd of diners was a little 'chaotic'. The space now encompasses three banqueting suites accommodating over 1,000 people and a buffet restaurant with over 400 covers that Rayner said was full when he visited - he had to rely on a local connection to get him a table. Rayner wrote that he was immediately 'clocked' as a reviewer by the restaurant, after which the staff were especially assiduous: "It was a chorus of 'Let me bring you the lamb chops' and 'You must try our nihari' and 'You need three types of naan'". He, too, raised his eyebrows at the scale of the operation which 'laughs in the face of the challenges facing hospitality', writing: "There are, on any given day, more than 100 dishes; a parade of pakoras and tikkas, birianis, masalas and the rest - a startling array. But ultimately the critic heaped warm praise on the food. Setting out his stall as no big fan of buffets, he conceded: "That meagre word doesn't do justice to the gargantuan offering here." "Perfect, bursting mouthfuls" of pani puri as a starter 'set the standard' for the evening, Rayner wrote, describing them as "delicate lentil flour globes filled with nutty chaat alongside jugs of a tamarind-based dressing". "Lamb chops, cut thin, have a decent smoky char. Deep-fried masala-marinated fish is especially good. " Then moving on from grilled items to the curries, he praised more familiar curry house favourites like the lamb nihari: "One of the great dark stews, heavy with green and black cardamom". But he also praised the variety of the dishes on offer. "What's striking is that, while there are crowd-pleasers, the kormas and tikka masalas with broad appeal, it's not all obvious," he wrote. "Lamb paya, a new dish to me, brings lamb trotters, cooked low and slow until chewy and lightly gelatinous, and served in an intensely restorative soup-like broth. "They also have haleem, an extraordinary concoction of lamb in lentils flavoured with ginger, green chillies and lemon, cooked down for so long that it has turned into a paste-like soup. "With this we have blistered Peshawari naan, the almond and pistachio filling dyed a disconcerting pink, alongside still-warm garlic and kulcha naan, crusted with sesame seeds." Rayner noted that there were some non-Asian items on offer as well, including chicken nuggets and lasagne. "But generally, the turnover of fried items is so fast they don't get a chance to go soggy." This was followed by a mouth-watering description of the desserts on offer: "deep-frying curls of cough-sweet-coloured jalebi" and "dinky globes of syrup-soaked gulab jamun, which are served still warm." Concluding by describing it "a remarkable operation", he wrote: I've sneered at the idea of buffets in the past, called them the place where good taste goes to die, and many of them are. "But the Royal Nawaab is a classy rebuttal."

Man who knew Madeleine McCann suspect makes huge claim as police search in Portugal

A man who knew Madeleine McCann's prime suspect, Christian Brueckner, has urgently pleaded with the authorities, suggesting they could be focusing their search in the wrong place. Speaking to GB News, Ken Ralphs claimed a person he believes to have been Brueckner's accomplice, once cried as he admitted to being part of a plot to abduct a child in Praia de Luz. Ralphs told GB News: "He cried that he needed the money to get out the country with his family and children and that's why he got involved." Mr Ralphs has pinpointed a location he believes to be the last property where Brueckner resided before Madeleine's disappearance, urging detectives to shift their attention to that spot, reports the MEN. Frustrated by years of inaction, he said: "For over 18 years, I've pressed the police and all they can do is blame each other for not passing this information on." Investigators are continuing their search of several abandoned buildings and a farmhouse close to the area of Praia da Luz, where Madeleine McCann was last seen while on holiday with her parents and siblings. Yesterday, June 4, marked the second day of the latest searches for the missing Madeleine McCann who disappeared while in the region, aged three. German and Portuguese police officers are involved in the investigations alongside firefighters as they look for evidence that could implicate prime suspect Brueckner. The search comes on the request of the German federal police. Brueckner is currently in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005, but is due to be released from jail in September if no further charges are brought forward.

Horror moment dad carrying 3-month old baby girl is randomly attacked in street by yob who swings punches at his head

THIS is the shocking moment a father carrying a three-month-old child was randomly attacked in the street. Zaid Smith was talking his daughter for a walk on Saturday when a man pounced on him and punched at his head in Manchester. CCTVThe horror attack was captured on CCTV outside a house[/caption] CCTVThe father could be seen cradling his baby daughter in his arms[/caption] CCTVBrave neighbours rushed out to intervene in the 'random' attack[/caption] The 22-year-old cradled baby Ariella in his arms, unable to defend himself. Video of the attack in Withington, Manchester, showed the father falling to the ground. Another relative came out of the house where Ariella had been picked up from to intervene. Brave neighbours restrained the man as the police were called. The baby's family were left fuming at how the case was handled. The attacker was given a conditional caution and was told to write letters of apology to the parents. This is because he had no previous convictions. But the family were outraged that he only received a 'slap on the wrist'. The baby's mother Morgan Milward, 22, told MEN: 'He was taking blows to the head. He did have a lump on his head. He had marks on the back of his neck. 'The baby was admitted to hospital as she has been unwell since the incident. She has been irritable and crying a lot. We are awaiting results of tests. 'She was shaken quite a bit by what happened. She went to hospital yesterday.' A police spokesperson said: 'A resolution for this case has not been finalised and investigations are still ongoing. 'A full review of the evidence will take place by a supervisor and a criminal justice outcome will then be decided. 'This decision will be made with the views of the victim fully understood, with an officer reaching out to speak with them today to ensure this position is clear. 'The suspect is currently on police bail and is to return to us in July.' CCTVThe baby girl's family were left shaken by what occured[/caption]

Man United's post-season farce was doomed from start with players 'fuming' to be there

Just hours after rounding off a dismal Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa, the Manchester United squad was herded onto an aeroplane bound for Kuala Lumpur for what proved a surreal post-season trip to Asia. According to the Manchester Evening News the trip was basically doomed to fail from the start, at least from a football perspective, with a 'well-placed source' claiming the players were 'fuming' to be in Asia immediately after a 60-game season. Advertisement As soon as the post-season tour was confirmed, a delegation of players approached the football leadership team to 'express their dismay' at having to play still more matches after a season that would drain energy and spirit from players and fans alike. The response from the club hierarchy to warnings that players may try to 'cry off' and avoid the over-14,000-mile round trip to Malaysia and Hong Kong was simply to slash the time between the final whistle at Old Trafford and chocks away at Manchester Airport. This blunt-instrument approach to dragging the beleaguered squad around Asia – including Diogo Dalot, Andre Onana and Harry Maguire leaving the Bukit Jalil National Stadium at half-time in one game to board a private jet to Mumbai – does not seem to have been appreciated by the players. That the MEN note that these three stars were 'happy to volunteer as they got to return home earlier' says it all. Advertisement It is hard to dredge up much sympathy for a squad who under-performed so badly all season, and the endless commercial activities for sponsors such as Adidas, Tezos and Snapdragon are a last-ditch effort for the club to claw back some money for reinvestment into the squad. But even so, the whistlestop tour at times bordered on farce – as an open-top bus carried United stars around Kuala Lumpur a United source's insistence that it was not meant to be a victory parade for a Europa League trophy just made it sound all the more likely that it was. After defeat to the ASEAN All Stars the Red Devils came from behind to beat Hong Kong 3-1 and secure a trophy, although its status amongst players and staff alike was beautifully illustrated by it being carried back to the dressing room by a press officer. The MEN report 'gallows humour' on the bus following the loss in the opening game and note that the booing after the game was not lost on the players, who had to wait for the referee and linesmen to be retrieved from their dressing room before the United squad could collect their silver medals. Advertisement One amongst the squad half-joked that the tour would be 'like a stag do' but by all accounts the dissatisfied group didn't achieve anything approaching debauchery, with Alejandro Garnacho, Amad and Ayden Heaven riding e-scooters paid for by locals about as crazy as it seems to have got. The headlines have mostly been grabbed by Alejandro Garnacho's attitude, which seems every inch that of a man desperate to leave, and he and Amad showing fans the middle finger. Amad explained that he was responding to jibes about his mother but Garnacho – described as 'surly' – gave no explanation. In news surely bordering on satire 'players were advised to stop making the offensive gesture.' That even manager Ruben Amorim 'cheerfully admitted to a colleague how exhausting the post-season tour had been' illustrates just how little enthusiasm the trip generated, and what sounds like a slightly manic energy flowing through the camp. Advertisement It's certainly a camp that will be delighted to be left to its own devices for a while, with some amongst it 'already at the end of their tether with many in the squad.' The MEN claim that 'the widespread consensus is that the players do not play to their maximum in every match.' While there are mitigating circumstances as to why whipping that dead horse of a squad in the humidity of Malaysia didn't go too well, it's an attitude which must be stamped out ahead of the new season.
