Mandya to undergo changes after patient's death
Mandya: In response to growing concerns over basic facilities at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) — particularly following the death of a three-year-old girl at the hospital on May 27 — Mandya MLA P Ravikumar and deputy commissioner Kumara convened a high-level meeting with MIMS officials on Monday. Highlighting drinking water as a basic necessity, the MLA acknowledged complaints about a severe shortage of potable water for patients and the public. As an immediate remedy, he approved the installation of two Reverse Osmosis (RO) drinking water units using MLA development funds. Officials have been instructed to identify and install these units in high-traffic areas within the hospital premises. Addressing long-standing complaints about parking mismanagement, Ravikumar directed that CCTV cameras be installed in the parking area. He also emphasised the need for electronic ticketing systems to log vehicle entry and exit times. The traffic police have been instructed to conduct regular inspections, especially in light of reports that some vehicles remain parked for extended periods without oversight. Expressing dissatisfaction with the current food services, the MLA proposed revamping the hospital canteen. He encouraged the involvement of women's self-help groups in establishing an 'Akka Canteen', which could receive financial assistance of up to Rs 5 lakh. Officials were urged to ensure the availability of clean, nutritious and affordable food for patients and visitors. The administration was also instructed to monitor complaints about doctors allegedly directing patients to purchase medicines from private pharmacies. To maintain oversight and swiftly resolve emerging issues, it was recommended that senior hospital officials — including the director, medical superintendent, resident medical officer, and chief administrative officer — conduct daily inspections. The meeting was attended by MIMS director Dr Narasimha Swamy and other senior hospital officials, who assured full cooperation in implementing the directives.

Interim Liberal leader unsure if he wants job permanently as party releases leadership rules
Social Sharing Nova Scotia's interim Liberal leader said Monday he hasn't given much thought to whether he wants the job on a permanent basis, as the party released the rules for next year's leadership race. The new leader will be selected at a convention on Nov. 28, 2026 — two years after the party suffered its most devastating election performance ever and returned to Province House with just two MLAs. Candidates have until July 28, 2026, to submit their nomination package, but whether that shortlist will include interim Liberal Leader Derek Mombourquette remains to be seen. "That would be a conversation I would have with my family, which we haven't really talked about at length to date," the MLA for Sydney-Membertou told CBC News. Electronic and telephone voting for the party's next leader will run Nov. 21-28, 2026, using a preferential ballot. Leadership candidates must be at least 18 and a member of the Liberal Party — and no other party — and submit a non-refundable nomination fee of $25,000, paid in three instalments, plus a $5,000 compliance deposit. The deposit is returned to the candidate following the election as long as all required financial filings have been made. The nomination package must include at least 100 signatures from members in good standing, at least 10 of whom are young Liberals. The signatures must also include members from at least 10 different electoral districts and 15 new members of the Angus L. Club, the party's monthly donor program. All would-be candidates are subject to a greenlighting process before they can be officially considered in the race for leader. 1-member, 1-vote system Campaigns are subject to a $250,000 expense limit, which includes the value of donated goods and services, but not the nomination fee, compliance deposit or expenses related to accessibility or family. The borrowing limit for each campaign is $30,000. The election of the new leader will use a one-member, one-vote system, weighted by provincial district. Each district is worth 100 points, meaning there is a total available 5,500 points based on there being 55 electoral districts. A candidate requires 2,751 points to win the leadership. If no candidate has that total after the first tabulation, the candidate with the lowest total is dropped and their points are reassigned to another candidate based on the second selection on the ranked ballot. That process will continue until a candidate reaches 2,751 points. Former Liberal MLAs Patricia Arab and David Wilton are co-chairing the leadership committee. Rankin not running Mombouquette has served as the party's interim leader since last December when Zach Churchill stepped down after losing his seat in the provincial election. The party's bylaws state that whoever holds the role of interim leader must agree in writing to remain neutral and not run in the election of the party leader. When Mombourquette took the helm on an interim basis, it was understood he would do so temporarily and at some point the role would shift to Timberlea-Prospect MLA Iain Rankin, the party's other member in Province House. Rankin, who previously served as premier and party leader until the Progressive Conservatives defeated the Liberals in the 2021 provincial election, told CBC News on Monday that he's not interested in another run at the job.

A new livestock industry initiative aimed at boosting the productivity and profitability of southern Western Australian beef producers has officially launched. It comes after a call from southern producers for industry to address the unique challenges they face in their region and input practical measures to support them. Meat & Livestock Australia and the Western Australia Livestock Research Council announced the start of the SMARTBEEF project on May 29, which will bring producers together to collaborate, share knowledge and implement practical on-farm improvements. It was designed by MLA, industry experts, the Western Beef Association and the University of Adelaide with climate conditions and shifting market dynamics as the focus. The project's team leader, Economics & Consulting principal, Lucy Anderton, said the project was designed to assist producers in tackling challenges through practical and collaborative learning. 'This project isn't about sitting in a room listening to presentations. It's about producers working together, learning from each other and using practical tools to drive success,' she said. 'It is an opportunity for these producers to improve their understanding of their productivity and profitability.' The program will develop the skills producers require to make data-driven decisions that improve profitability by analysing their financials, cost of production and production systems. They will also gain insights into the WA beef market and market specifications through access to industry experts and supply chain participants. Albany producer Matt Leov is one of several farmers who will showcase best practices — including digital agriculture, reproductive efficiency and sustainability — in their area as part of the program. 'The ability to observe and understand the practices of similar farms presents a significant opportunity for improvement — it has the potential to transform how we operate,' he said. 'I'm particularly looking forward to learning from others and identifying cost-effective strategies that can deliver meaningful results.' The first producer group will start in July and finish in September, 2026, while the second will begin in July 2026 to December 2027.
