Mariners beat MLB-leading Tigers 8-4, sweeping 3-game series before All-Star break
DETROIT (AP) — Jorge Polanco and Cole Young hit back-to-back home runs in a four-run ninth inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers 8-4 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. Julio Rodriguez, Randy Arozarena and Mitch Garver also hit solo home runs for the Mariners, who humbled the major league-leading Tigers with 12-3 and 15-7 wins in the first two games of the series. Seattle's 35 runs is the most they have scored in a three-game series since 2002. The Tigers are taking a season-high four-game losing streak into the All-Star break. After Polanco broke a 4-all tie in the ninth and Young created a two-run cushion, the Mariners scored two more runs. Matt Brash (1-0) struck out two in the eighth to earn the win. Tommy Kahnle (1-2) gave up three runs on two hits and a walk without getting an out in the pivotal ninth. Detroit scored two unearned runs off Logan Gilbert in the first inning, taking advantage of Luke Raley's throwing error, and went ahead again in the seventh on Riley Greene's 24th homer of the season. Seattle's Cal Raleigh went 0 for 2 with three walks, leaving him with an AL-record 38 homers before the All-Star Game — one shy of Barry Bonds' 2001 major league record for homers before the break. Raleigh stole a base, joining Babe Ruth (1921), Reggie Jackson (1969) and Ken Griffey Jr. (1998) as players with at least 38 homers and 10 stolen bases in their team's first 96 games. Key moment Polanco was a pinch-hitter to lead off the ninth and hit a 401-foot homer to right. Key stat Raleigh is the first catcher to lead the majors outright in homers at the All-Star break since Hall of Famer Johnny Bench in 1972. Up next The Tigers have a franchise-record six All-Stars in Atlanta, including starting pitcher Tarik Skubal. Seattle is sending five All-Stars to the Midsummer Classic for the first time since 2003. ___ AP MLB:

Pirates slip past Twins for 2-1 victory to end 8-game skid
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Spencer Horwitz had a bases-loaded RBI ground out in the ninth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates ended an eight-game slide by beating the Minnesota Twins 2-1 Sunday. Isiah Kiner-Falefa tied a career high with four hits for Pittsburgh. Ke'Bryan Hayes singled with one out in the ninth off Twins closer Jhoan Duran (5-4). Pinch-hitter Oneil Cruz had an infield single and Kiner-Falefa singled to load the bases. Horwitz hit a sharp grounder that second baseman Brooks Lee dove to his right to stop. Looking to start a double play, Lee couldn't cleanly get the ball out of his glove and had to settle for a force out at first allowing Hayes to score. Dennis Santana pitched a scoreless eighth (3-2) for the Pirates and David Bednar earned his 13th save. Byron Buxton, Carlos Correa and Harrison Bader each had two hits for Minnesota, which finished 6-3 on a nine-game homestand but failed to get back to .500 for the first time since June 17. Mitch Keller allowed one run in six innings for Pittsburgh but again got little support. The Pirates have scored one or zero runs while Keller is in the game in 11 of his 20 starts. Yet, his 14 quality starts are tied for second in the majors with Philadelphia's Zack Wheeler. San Francisco's Logan Webb has 15. Tommy Pham homered in the second for Pittsburgh. Buxton, who hit for the cycle Saturday, had an RBI double in the third. Key moment Tied 1-1, Minnesota had runners on first and second with one out in the eighth, but Willi Castro hit a dribbler in front of the plate and DaShawn Keirsey Jr. was thrown out at third. Trevor Larnach then flew out. Key stat Minnesota's Simeon Woods Richardson allowed six hits and one earned run in 4 2-3 innings. He's allowed five earned runs in 30 2-3 innings in his past six starts. Up next Both teams return to action Friday after the All-Star break: Pittsburgh is home to the Chicago White Sox; Minnesota is at Colorado. ___ AP MLB:

Rangers jump on Astros early to complete season's first half with a win
July 13 - Adolis Garcia and Marcus Semien each homered while Nathan Eovaldi capped his stellar first half with another quality start as the visiting Texas Rangers claimed the rubber match of a three-game series against the Houston Astros with a 5-1 victory on Sunday. The Rangers completed a seasonlong 10-game road trip at 5-5 by pouncing on Astros All-Star right-hander Hunter Brown (9-4) and riding Eovaldi for 7? innings, his longest outing since a four-hit shutout of the Cincinnati Reds on April 1. Eovaldi (7-3) threw 102 pitches, 73 for strikes. Eovaldi sidestepped trouble in the bottom of the first inning after Isaac Paredes (double) and Cam Smith (walk) reached safely to open the frame. After Eovaldi induced a double play groundout by Jose Altuve, the Rangers' Evan Carter ended the inning with a dazzling catch in center field. Eovaldi faced just one batter over the minimum over the ensuing four innings. Astros shortstop Zack Short smacked a homer to left field to lead off the sixth inning, but Eovaldi responded by striking out four of the next five batters and retiring the final six he faced. He allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out eight in his 10th quality start of the year. Eovaldi improved to 3-0 with a 1.66 ERA in four starts since his return from the injured list. Carter followed a leadoff walk from Wyatt Langford in the second with a run-scoring triple into the right-field corner. Three batters later, Ezequiel Duran dropped a double down the right-field line that scored Carter and extended the Texas lead to 2-0. Garcia bashed his 13th home run of the season, a two-out solo shot to left, for a 3-0 lead in the third. Carter doubled and scored in the fourth when Alejandro Osuna lifted a sacrifice fly to right. Brown allowed four runs on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over five innings. He surrendered 10 runs over his final two starts of the first half after giving up just seven runs in his previous seven starts combined. Semien homered off Astros reliever Kaleb Ort in the eighth for the 250th home run of his career. The Astros concluded the first half with a 1-5 homestand. --Field Level Media

Mariners pull away from Tigers in top of the ninth
July 13 - Pinch-hitter Jorge Polanco and Cole Young hit back-to-back homers in the top of the ninth, lifting the visiting Seattle Mariners to a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers with an 8-4 win on Sunday. Polanco broke a 4-4 tie with his long ball off Tommy Kahnle (1-2). Julio Rodriguez homered for the third straight game and added an RBI double in the ninth. Randy Arozarena and Mitch Garver also homered for Seattle, while Matt Brash (1-0) picked up the win in relief. Seattle starter Logan Gilbert only allowed two unearned runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings while striking out nine. Dillon Dingler drove in two runs and Riley Greene homered for the Tigers, who lost their fourth straight. Detroit starter Jack Flaherty gave up two runs and four hits in five innings with seven strikeouts. Detroit scored twice in the bottom of the first on Dingler's two-out, two-run double. Rodriguez put Seattle on the board by ripping a Flaherty fastball over the right field wall for his 14th homer. The Tigers had three singles in the bottom of the inning but didn't score. Gleyber Torres was thrown out by Rodriguez trying to advance from first to third on a single. Arozarena knotted the score when he led off the fourth with his 17th homer, driving a Flaherty knuckle curve over the left field wall. Garver gave the Mariners a 3-2 lead when he led off the seventh with his fifth homer, drilling a cutter from Tyler Holton over the left-center field wall. Detroit took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Javier Baez led off with a single, advanced on a groundout, stole third and scored on Torres' sacrifice fly. Greene then blasted his 24th homer, taking advantage of a hanging slider from Gabe Speier. The lead didn't last long. Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh drew walks off Will Vest and Arozarena followed with an RBI double. Luke Raley walked to load the bases. A short flyout and double play allowed Vest to escape without allowing a go-ahead run. --Field Level Media

Shota Imanaga tosses a gem as Cubs claim series against Yankees
July 13 - Shota Imanaga pitched seven outstanding innings and the visiting Chicago Cubs ended the unofficial first half of the season with a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon. The Cubs won the final two games of the series after allowing three homers to Cody Bellinger in an 11-0 loss on Friday. Chicago now heads into the All-Star break with 57 wins, its most since the 2008 season. The left-hander followed eight scoreless innings from Matthew Boyd in Saturday's 5-2 win and held the Yankees to one run and two hits in the longest of his four starts since returning from a strained left hamstring. Imanaga (6-3) struck out six and walked one while throwing 55 of 91 pitches for strikes. He fell behind eight of the first 10 hitters before an impressive sequence in the fourth when he retired Cody Bellinger, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Imanga retired Bellinger on a fly ball to right field and then fanned Judge and Stanton. Michael Busch homered in his first career plate appearance in the leadoff spot on the second pitch from New York rookie Will Warren (6-5). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Busch became the first Cub to homer in his first plate appearance in the leadoff spot since Willson Contreras on June 26, 2017. Dansby Swanson hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the sixth off Ian Hamilton as the Cubs won for the fourth time in their past six visits to Yankee Stadium. Seiya Suzuki contributed a double and scored from second on an infield hit by Pete Crow-Armstrong in the seventh. Giancarlo Stanton hit his 433rd career homer in the second for the Yankees, who lost their second straight following a five-game winning streak. The Yankees ended the first half by dropping 18 of 29 games. Judge struck out twice in three at-bats against Imanaga. Bellinger celebrated his 30th birthday but saw a career-high 17-game hitting streak stopped. Warren allowed two runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out one and walked three. Drew Pomeranz breezed through the eighth and Daniel Valencia easily converted his 12th save. --Field Level Media
