Crow-Armstrong homers and Boyd pitches Cubs to win over Rockies

Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his 15th home run, Matthew Boyd tossed six innings of four-hit ball and the Chicago Cubs edged the Colorado Rockies 2-1 on Wednesday night for their fourth straight win. Seiya Suzuki doubled in a run and rookie Matt Shaw had two hits for the NL Central leaders, who have won 10 of 12. Boyd (5-2) allowed just an unearned run while striking out eight and walking none. Three relievers followed, with Daniel Palencia pitching a perfect ninth for his fourth save. Tyler Freeman had a sacrifice fly for the Rockies, who lost their fifth straight and fell to 9-47 — the worst record in the majors. Orlando Arcia, who signed with Colorado earlier in the day, singled in his first two at-bats with his new team. Arcia was released by Atlanta on Sunday after batting .194 in 14 games with the Braves. Tanner Gordon (1-2) permitted two runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings for the Rockies. Boyd retired 13 of his first 14 batters. Arcia singled leading off the third. Chicago jumped ahead 1-0 in the first on Suzuki's double to the left-center wall. Crow-Armstrong made it 2-0 in the fourth when he golfed a low curveball down the right-field line. Key moment Boyd got through a shaky sixth and exited ahead 2-1. Chicago led 2-0 when Mickey Moniak led off with a single. Jordan Beck followed with a drive to left that Ian Happ caught at the wall. Moniak advanced to third on Boyd's wild pickoff attempt and scored on Freeman's sac fly, caught by Crow-Armstrong against the center-field wall. Key stat Shaw is 13 for 34 (.382) since being recalled from Triple-A Iowa on May 20. Up next Rockies LHP Kyle Freeland (0-7, 5.86 ERA) faces Mets LHP David Peterson (3-2, 2.79) on Friday in New York. The Cubs host Cincinnati on Friday. Neither team had announced a scheduled starter.

Rookie lefty Noah Cameron dynamite again as Royals top Reds

May 29 - Noah Cameron continued the stellar start to his major league career, allowing a single run while pitching into the seventh inning as the Kansas City Royals beat the visiting Cincinnati Reds 3-2 on Wednesday night. Cameron (2-1), who hails from nearby St. Joseph, Mo., yielded only a sixth-inning run on six hits and two walks over 6 1/3 innings in his fourth career start. According to MLB, Cameron is just the second pitcher since 1893 to go 6 1/3-plus innings and allow one run or fewer in his first four career starts. The left-hander boasts a 1.05 ERA. He set the tempo Wednesday for the Royals, who avoided being swept in the three-game set after allowing seven runs in each of the first two contests. Spencer Steer had three hits and two RBIs, while Tyler Stephenson also recorded three singles for the Reds. Making his second start since missing a little more than two weeks with a right groin strain, Cincinnati's Hunter Greene (4-3) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings. Kansas City's Maikel Garcia extended his hitting streak to 13 games by lining the ball off Greene's calf in the fourth. Then Drew Waters sent a smash just under the glove of Reds second baseman Matt McLain, and Garcia, running on the pitch, scored from first. Kansas City made it 2-0 in the fifth. John Rave doubled to right for his first big-league hit and eventually scored on Bobby Witt Jr.'s double down the right field line. In the sixth, Cameron walked Austin Hays, who exited later with a bruised foot, then yielded back-to-back singles to left field by Stephenson and Steer. The latter brought home the Reds' first run. Cameron exited with one out and a man on in the seventh. Angel Zerpa then allowed an infield hit to TJ Friedl but got Santiago Espinal to ground into a 5-4-3 double play. The Royals had runners on second and third with nobody out in the bottom of that frame, but managed only one run via Witt's sacrifice fly. Cincinnati got within a run in the eighth when Elly De La Cruz doubled then scored on Steer's single. --Field Level Media

Brendan Donovan powers Cardinals past Orioles

May 29 - Brendan Donovan hammered a key two-run home run and Masyn Winn recorded four hits as the St. Louis Cardinals overcame the host Baltimore Orioles, winning 6-4 on Wednesday night to take the final two games of the three-game series. Donovan finished with three hits and Lars Nootbaar added two hits as the Cardinals won for the fifth time in six games. Jackson Holliday produced three hits, including a lead-off single in the ninth for the Orioles. Cedric Mullins, Dylan Carlson and Ryan Mountcastle had two hits for Baltimore, which has lost on back-to-back nights following a season-best three-game winning streak. John King (2-0) was the winning pitcher with one inning of relief and Ryan Helsley picked up his 12th save by working the ninth despite allowing two singles. Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas gave up four runs on nine hits in four innings. Cade Povich's start for Baltimore ended after 4 2/3 innings, yielding five runs and eight hits plus three walks despite striking out nine. The Orioles have lost their last four games started by Povich (1-4). The combination of Nootbaar, Winn and Donovan atop the St. Louis batting order combined to go 9-for-15 at the plate. The Orioles went up 1-0 in the second when Mullins' infield single resulted in a run when Mikolas made an errant throw. Baltimore tacked on another run when Maverick Handley, the next batter, grounded out as Ramon Urias crossed the plate before Holliday doubled in the third run. Jordan Walker's two-out, two-run single in the fourth brought the Cardinals to within 3-2. Carlson's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth against his former team stretched Baltimore's lead to 4-2. Winn doubled in a run in the fifth and, before the Orioles recorded an out, St. Louis went ahead on Donovan's two-run blast. It was Donovan's fourth homer of the season. Ivan Herrera's double pushed the gap to 6-4 in the seventh. The game's start was delayed 30 minutes because of rain. --Field Level Media
