Ryan Yarbrough, Yankees shut down Dodgers to avoid sweep

Manny Machado, Padres claw past Pirates LOS ANGELES: Ben Rice hit a two-run home run and left-hander Ryan Yarbrough went six strong innings against his former club as the visiting New York Yankees avoided a three-game sweep in a World Series rematch with a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. DJ LeMahieu had four hits and drove in a pair of runs as the Yankees finished a 6-3 road trip against the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels and Dodgers. It was LeMahieu's first four-hit game since June of 2021. Yarbrough (3-0), who received his World Series ring this weekend after making 32 relief appearances with the Dodgers last season, gave up one run on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts in his fifth start of the season. Tommy Edman, Andy Pages and Max Muncy each hit home runs for the Dodgers, who saw a late surge fall short after scoring a combined 26 runs in two victories to start the series. Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-4) gave up four runs while tying a career high with seven hits allowed in 3 2/3 innings as he gave up three walks. He failed to complete five innings for the first time this season. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single from Jasson Dominguez, before the Dodgers tied it in the second on Edman's ninth home run. New York moved in front for good in the third inning when Rice followed a leadoff walk to Aaron Judge with a two-run home run to center field. Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells singled with one out and Volpe scored on a two-out wild pitch from Yamamoto. The Dodgers closed within 6-3 in the seventh inning against right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga when Pages and Muncy hit home runs in a span of three batters. Muncy hit his third home run in two games and now has seven on the season. LeMahieu's fourth hit of the game was an RBI double in the ninth. Dominguez hurt his left thumb after stealing second base in the fifth inning. The Dodgers were playing without Mookie Betts, who missed the series with a fracture at the tip of a toe on his left foot. Padres beat Pirates Manny Machado homered and knocked in the tiebreaking run during a four-run seventh-inning rally as the San Diego Padres stopped the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 on Sunday. Machado's sacrifice fly to deep center scored Elias Diaz with the run that put San Diego ahead 5-4. Tyler Wade capped the big inning by stroking an infield single off the glove of reliever Caleb Ferguson that plated Fernando Tatis Jr. Adrian Morejon (3-2) got the last out of the seventh to pick up the win and Robert Suarez pitched the ninth for his MLB-high 19th save. It was the third straight series win for the Padres, who will play 17 of their next 20 games in a 21-day stretch against winning teams. Tanner Rainey (0-1) was tagged with the loss after losing the strike zone in the seventh. He was charged with all four runs, allowing just one hit but walking three. The only hit was Diaz's pinch-hit RBI single that scored Xander Bogaerts to make it 4-3. Rainey walked Tatis to load the bases and Luis Arraez greeted Ferguson with a run-scoring single to left that tied the score. Machado cracked his seventh homer off Andrew Heaney in the bottom of the first to stake Padres starter Randy Vasquez to an early lead. But the Pirates used the long ball to take control in the third as Andrew McCutchen drilled a two-run shot to left, his fifth of the year and second in as many games. Ke'Bryan Hayes added an RBI single later in the third and Adam Frazier made it 4-1 in the fourth with a solo blast to left-center, his third of the year. Vasquez left later in the inning after permitting four runs on six hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Heaney retired 13 in a row in one stretch, departing after Jackson Merrill doubled home Arraez with two outs in the sixth. Heaney gave up five hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings, walking none and whiffing three. – Reuters

Tigers CF Javier Báez was ejected in the fifth inning after an animated argument with the home-plate umpire over a called third strike on a pitch that Statcast showed to be low. After the ejection, Báez had to be restrained by teammate Gleyber Torres and third-base coach Joey Cora. Key stat The Tigers have an MLB-high 19 wins in 26 day games. Yankees' win over Mariners overshadowed by Oswaldo Cabrera's scary injury

Try it free SEATTLE — A feel-good win for the Yankees quickly turned somber in the ninth inning Monday night. Oswaldo Cabrera scored on a sacrifice fly, but in the process suffered what appeared to be a serious lower-leg injury that forced him to leave the field in an ambulance with his left leg in an air cast. Advertisement The energetic third baseman had to sidestep the catcher to avoid a tag, but then as he pivoted back toward the plate, his ankle appeared to give out. He hit the deck and touched home but with his lower leg bent the wrong way as trainer Tim Lentych immediately raced out to tend to Cabrera. A hush fell over T-Mobile Park as medical personnel quickly called for the ambulance and Cabrera writhed in pain on the ground, with Lentych. In the visiting dugout, the Yankees looked on with concern, many with their head in their hands, for their teammate who has always been a bundle of joy since he arrived in the big leagues. Advertisement The brutal injury cast a pall on the Yankees' 11-5 win over the Mariners that was buoyed by a six-run fifth inning. 6 Trainers tend to New York Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera (95) after being injured while scoring a run against the Seattle Mariners during the ninth inning at T-Mobile Park. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect The frame that began with Trent Grisham's second home run of the night and ended with a three-run shot from Austin Wells marked the fourth straight game in which the Yankees (24-17) have scored five or more runs in an inning. They did so twice Sunday against the Athletics and have scored five or more runs in an inning six times in their past six games. Advertisement CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS Monday's outburst against the Mariners (22-18) turned a 2-1 deficit into a 7-2 lead in a hurry off right-hander Emerson Hancock and sent the Yankees to their fifth win in their past six games. They have scored 39 runs through their first four games of this trip, the first three in the A's Triple-A, wind-impacted ballpark. Advertisement Every Yankee had at least one hit on a night when the team racked up 15 while scoring in double digits for the fourth time in six games and the MLB-high ninth time this season. It was more than enough support for Clarke Schmidt, who gave up a pair of solo shots through the first three innings but allowed only one other hit (which also turned into a run after he left the game) through six-plus innings. It marked his third straight solid start, a span in which he has allowed just four runs across 17 innings, offering more hope he can be a quality third starter behind Max Fried and Carlos Rodón. 6 Austin Wells of the New York Yankees reacts after his three-run home run with Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger of the New York Yankees against the Seattle Mariners. Getty Images The Mariners made things interesting when Cal Raleigh clubbed a two-run shot off Tim Hill to get within 8-5 in the eighth inning. But Anthony Volpe answered with a two-run blast of his own to regain some breathing room. Grisham continued to be a surprising godsend at the top of the order, crushing his 11th and 12th home runs of the season. The first came in the third inning to tie the game 1-1 — with an assist from center fielder Julio Rodriguez, who nearly robbed it but instead saw the ball tip off his glove to ensure it got over the wall — before he tied it again 2-2 to lead off the fifth. 6 Yankees catcher Austin Wells (28) runs the bases after hitting a three-run home run against the Seattle Mariners during the fifth inning at T-Mobile Park. Aaron Judge, who went a ho-hum 2-for-3 with two walks and is now batting .414, followed with a single before Ben Rice ripped a double to the right field corner. Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger then delivered back-to-back RBI singles to put the Yankees up 4-2. One out later, Wells drilled his eighth home run of the year to make it a 7-2 lead. Schmidt did exactly what he was supposed to do in the bottom of the fifth, retiring the Mariners in order on eight pitches to keep the momentum fully on the Yankees side. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect The Yankees added an insurance run in the seventh with more good baserunning and situational hitting. Goldschmidt led off with a single, then went first to third on Volpe's one-out single to right field, setting him up to score on Wells' sacrifice fly. Schmidt was in an early groove after striking out the first two batters he faced and then getting ahead of Julio Rodriguez 1-2. Advertisement But then he left a sweeper right down the middle, and it ended predictably, with Rodriguez crushing it for a home run and a 1-0 Mariners lead. 6 Clarke Schmidt of the New York Yankees is taken out of the game during the seventh inning Mariners at T-Mobile Park. Leody Taveras then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move up the runners, but it served as a lifeline for Schmidt, who extinguished the threat with a strikeout and a fly out.
