Orioles Reunite With Veteran Reliever In Trade With Braves

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Baltimore Orioles have reunited with right-handed reliever Scott Blewett from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for cash considerations, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Atlanta designated Blewett for assignment to bring franchise legend Craig Kimbrel back to the major leagues. The Orioles previously designated Blewett for assignment just days after acquiring him after the Minnesota Twins placed him on waivers. The Phillies defeated the Braves 5-4. More Photo byBlewett appeared in only two games with the Orioles before landing in Atlanta, pitching 4 1/3 innings and not allowing an earned run. Blewett had a similar stat line with the Twins, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing just one earned run. Blewett would then go on to land a roster spot for longer than a month with the Braves, where he appeared in 11 games with a 5.51 ERA before being traded back to Baltimore. Blewett is in his fourth season in the majors and has appeared in the most games in his career this season, with 15 across the three different teams he has suited up for. Blewett is out of options, and teams see that he can be a valuable pickup when available, as he is headed back to a prior employer. While Blewett has a below-average fastball velocity this season, sitting at 93.4 mph, he has been effective in situations during the season. Blewett is in the 90th percentile in getting hitters to whiff on his pitches, along with being in the 91st percentile in groundball percentage. Blewett has yet to stick with a team this season, but with Baltimore faltering, this may be the opportunity he needs to prove himself at the major league level. Red Sox Trade Idea Ships Out $3.75 Million All-Star to Call Up Roman Anthony

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Diego Padres are looking for a left fielder. And they should be. According to MLB Trade Rumors, "no team in baseball has gotten less from the left field position this season than the Padres, whose left fielders have combined for an unimpressive minus-0.7 bWAR over the team's first 50 games." Even with the MLB trade deadline more than two months away, the Padres are already exploring deals to upgrade the position — an urgent need if they want to stay in the nail-biting three-team race for the National League West pennant. More Maddie Malhotra/BostonThe Friars, approximately one-third of the way through the schedule, sit two games in back of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and one behind the second-place San Francisco Giants. The Boston Red Sox may be able to meet that need, as well as meet a need of their own. After calling up their No. 2 prospect — the No. 8 prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline's rankings — Marcelo Mayer on Saturday, and starting the season with another top prospect, second baseman Kristian Campbell, already on the big league roster, Boston has one highly ranked prospect remaining at Triple-A Worcester. More MLB: Red Sox Manager Insists Star Slugger Will Not Play Third Base Despite Alex Bregman Injury That prospect, 21-year-old Roman Anthony, is not only the top prospect in the Red Sox system, but the overall No. 1 in the game. 116 mph off the bat on this homer from Roman Anthony 🤯 — Red Sox Player Development (@RedSoxPlayerDev) May 26, 2025 Anthony would appear to have nothing left to prove at the minor league level. At Worcester this season, the West Palm Beach, Florida, native boasts a .971 OPS — highest in the International League of any hitter with at least 150 at-bats — and a .321 batting average, also tops that category. But the Red Sox have yet to find a place for Anthony with all three outfield spots occupied. Trading left fielder Jarren Duran, the MVP of the 2024 All-Star Game, to San Diego would open up that spot for Anthony. Duran would make an attractive target for the Padres, on an economical $3.75 million one-year contract and under team control through 2028. His contact contains a 2026 club option for $8 million, but if that option is declined, Duran would again be eligible for salary arbitration. Jarren Duran throwing Alex Verdugo out by 20 FT. I enjoy that. — Tyler Milliken (@tylermilliken_) May 18, 2025 Why would the Red Sox part with Duran? The fact is, he simply is not living up to the standards he set last year, so far. His OPS is down to .762 from .834 last season. He belted 21 home runs in 2024. At his current pace, given the same number of plate appearances (735), he would hit only 12 this year. Defensively, in his All-Star season, Duran led all centerfielders who played at least 800 innings at the position with 17 defensive runs saved, according to Fangraphs. Playing almost exclusively left field this time around, Duran currently has a DRS number of just one. Duran is again leading the American League in triples (six), but even with some decline, the Red Sox left fielder is still significantly better than any option the Padres currently have at the position. More MLB: Red Sox Saying Goodbye to Local Boy Made Good Former 1st Round Pick At age 28, turning 29 on Sept. 5, Duran is no longer a prospect. His long-term upside would appear to be considerably lower that that of the 21-year-old Anthony. For the Padres, however, he would provide an upgrade immediately as they battle to win their division. The Red Sox remain in need of a first baseman since the season-ending injury to Triton Casas on May 2. Padres utility man Gavin Sheets, who has 97 major league games at first on his resumé, would make a likely piece of a larger package in return for Duran. Francis Pena obliterating a hitter on 3 pitches — Giannis Auntiegotapoodle (@TooMuchMortons_) July 25, 2024 The Padres trade package would also likely include prospects. The Red Sox, in need of big league-ready relief pitching, could take righty fireballer Francis Pena, who currently has 22 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings for the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas. Pena continues to struggle with control, but could provide a much-needed fresh arm in waiting for an overtaxed Red Sox bullpen. Recent Yankees Reliever Lands MLB Opportunity With Red Sox

A recent New York Yankees relief pitcher has resurfaced with the AL East rival Boston Red Sox. Right-handed reliever Nick Burdi earned an Opening Day bullpen role with the Yankees in 2024. And he quickly proved the front office right for trusting in him, pitching to a 1.86 ERA over his first 12 appearances. Advertisement Unfortunately, Burdi's 2024 campaign ended on May 24, as the Yankees were forced to place him on the injured list with right hip inflammation. Burdi spent the remainder of the season either on the IL or in Triple-A. He signed with the Red Sox in February. Boston Red Sox reliever Nick Burdi pitches as a member of the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in Penner-Imagn Images On May 16, 2025, the Red Sox announced that they had "selected right-handed pitcher Nick Burdi to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester." Right-handed pitcher Cooper Criswell was optioned to Triple-A Worcester as a result, with injured starter Kutter Crawford also being transferred to the 60-day injured list. Although Burdi only spent parts of the 2023 and 2024 campaigns inside the Yankees organization, he's had a long and winding career that began as a high-end prospect of the Minnesota Twins. Advertisement The Twins selected Burdi (for the second time) during round two of the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft. But he never pitched in a major league outing for Minnesota, undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2017. Most of Burdi's MLB career came later, as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Over three seasons' worth of spot appearances with the Pirates, Burdi pitched to a cumulative 9.49 ERA. He missed the 2021 campaign due to Tommy John surgery, once again, before joining the Chicago Cubs in 2022. Burdi didn't have much success with the Cubs at the pro level either, but he reinvented himself with the Yankees, even if the end result was brief. Advertisement It'll be interesting to see which Burdi the Red Sox get in Boston, although MLB Trade Rumors noted that the 32-year-old reliever managed a 0.54 ERA over 16.2 innings at Triple-A Worcester. Yankees Might Avoid Stroman's 2026 Option Due to Injury Setback

After a month on the injured list with a knee issue, Marcus Stroman is still feeling discomfort and not nearing a return to the New York Yankees' rotation. While the rotation is stretched thin right now, they have been getting by with strong spot starts by Ryan Yarbrough. And as MLB Trade Rumors points out, Stroman's delayed return will make it hard for him to reach the 140 innings needed for his 2026 option to vest. That could save the Yankees $18.5 million next year and, more importantly, a roster spot. New York Yankees starter Marcus StromanNathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Aaron Boone told reporters on Sunday that Stroman still felt discomfort in his left knee during a simulated game this week. The rule of thumb for pitchers is that for however long they are down with an injury, it takes them just as long to ramp up to return. Advertisement The Yankees cannot expect Stroman back in the rotation until June now. Stroman was initially brought in as a depth arm, not a long-term fixture. The Yankees even explored trading him this past winter, both to clear salary and because, at the time, Stroman wasn't seen as one of their top five starters. He insisted on staying in the rotation and injuries to Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil made room. He pitched to an 11.57 ERA with seven walks and seven strikeouts in 9 ⅓ innings this year over three starts. After signing a two-year $37-million deal (with the option for 2026) last offseason, Stroman made 30 appearances, including 29 starts for the Yankees in 2024. He went 9-10 with a 4.31 ERA, his highest since 2018 with the Toronto Blue Jays. After a decent first half, posting a 3.31 ERA, Stroman blew up in his last 11 appearances, allowing 33 earned runs in 49 ⅔ innings. He did not appear in the Yankees' playoff run to the World Series. Red Sox, Garrett Crochet agree to six-year, $170 million extension: Source

On Monday night, the Boston Red Sox and Garrett Crochet agreed to terms on a six-year, $170 million contract extension, a team source confirmed to The Athletic. The Red Sox are in agreement on a long-term deal with their No. 1 starter. Crochet will make $3.8 million in his final year of arbitration-eligibility this season before the extension kicks in at the start of 2026. The six-year deal runs through 2031 and includes an opt-out after 2030. Advertisement The deal marks the largest ever for a pitcher with just four-plus years of service time. According to MLB Trade Rumors, the largest previous deal for a player with between four and five years of service time was Jacob deGrom's 2019 extension with the New York Mets, which guaranteed him $120.5 million over the next four seasons (the deal had a valuation of $110.5 million with deferrals). When the Red Sox traded for Crochet this winter, sending their two most recent first-round picks in a four-player package to the Chicago White Sox, they expressed serious interest in signing him to a long-term extension, given he was set to become a free agent after the 2026 season. But as spring training drew to a close, Crochet said he wanted to table talks during the season to focus on the season and not be a distraction to teammates. Evidently that changed. The 25-year-old dominated in spring training, striking out 30 of 66 batters he faced across five starts, while flashing a triple digit fastball from his first start. In the regular-season opener on Thursday against the Texas Rangers, Crochet was not quite as sharp as he had been in spring, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks in five innings, striking out four. Last season for the White Sox, Crochet earned his first All-Star nod after an impressive first half with a 3.02 ERA through 20 starts. He finished the year with a 3.58 ERA and 35.1 percent strikeout rate across 32 starts, albeit shortened starts, as the White Sox aimed to keep him healthy coming off Tommy John surgery. The Red Sox, in need of an anchor for their rotation, pursued Crochet for much of the winter before finalizing the deal at the Winter Meetings, marking one of the biggest trades of the offseason. Now they have locked up their No. 1 starter of the future.
