MPTC coordinating with DOTr for NLEX Connector toll holiday during EDSA rehab
Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC) is now in discussion with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to implement a toll holiday at the eight-kilometer NLEX Connector. 'We are currently coordinating with DOTr,' MPTC president Jose Ma. Lim told GMA News Online. Lim was asked to confirm if MPTC is waiving toll at its NLEX Connector elevated expressway. Business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan on Tuesday expressed intent to follow the lead of San Miguel Corp. (SMC) on imposing toll holiday in portions of Skyway Stage 3 while EDSA is undergoing a two-year rehabilitation. 'I think we also have a connector. Maybe we should do the same thing. I have to talk to our tollways to follow San Miguel's lead," Pangilinan said, referring to NLEX Connector. NLEX Connector is an eight-kilometer all-elevated highway built along the right of way of the Philippine National Railway (PNR), extending the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) from the end of its Harbor Link Segment 10 in C3/5th Avenue, Caloocan City, to Ramon Magsaysay Avenue in Sta. Mesa, Manila. Pangilinan's pronouncement came after Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said SMC will waive toll fees in select areas of the Skyway Stage 3 where vehicles will be detoured while the EDSA rehabilitation is ongoing, starting July or August. This will be implemented alongside a 24-hour odd-even number coding scheme limited to EDSA, with the dry run expected to start on June 16, and last for a month. The EDSA rehabilitation is projected to last until 2027, with the preparatory works set to begin on the evening of June 13, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). The government is also looking at deploying an additional 100 buses along the EDSA Busway, and additional car train sets on the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3) during the period. Apart from NLEX and NLEX Connector, MPTC also operates the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), the Manila-Cavite Toll Expressway (CAVITEX), the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX), and the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX). —AOL, GMA Integrated News

MVP considering toll holiday during EDSA rehab
Business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan, who leads Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC), on Tuesday expressed intent to follow the lead of San Miguel Corp. (SMC) and impose a toll holiday during the rehabilitation of EDSA, the country's busiest highway. According to Pangilinan, MPTC should consider a toll holiday and take the lead from SMC in waiving toll fees in portions of the Skyway Stage 3 while EDSA is being rehabilitated. "I think we also have a connector. Maybe we should do the same thing. I have to talk to our tollways to follow San Miguel's lead," Pangilinan said. He was referring to the NLEX Connector, an 8-kilometer all-elevated highway built along the right of way of the Philippine National Railway (PNR), extending the NLEX from the end of its Harbor Link Segment 10 in C3/5th Avenue, Caloocan City, to Ramon Magsaysay Avenue in Sta. MPTC operates the NLEX, the NLEX Connector, the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), the Manila-Cavite Toll Expressway (CAVITEX), the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX), and the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX). "I think we should," Pangilinan said when asked if he is open to following SMC's lead in waiving toll fees. "I think San Miguel has taken the lead there, and it was a good lead that they've done, and I think we should follow their example to help out in the traffic situation, I guess for the next two years or so," he added. This comes as Transportation Secretary Vivencio "Vince" Dizon said SMC will waive toll fees in select areas of the Skyway Stage 3 where vehicles will be detoured while the EDSA rehabilitation is ongoing, starting July or August. This will be implemented alongside a 24-hour odd-even number coding scheme limited to EDSA, with the dry run expected to start on June 16, and last for a month. T'gana ramps up welfare ahead of panchayat polls
Hyderabad: Indications from recent govt actions suggest that panchayat elections in Telangana are likely to be held in July, followed by MPTC, ZPTC, and municipal elections. The govt appears to be in full election mode, aligning welfare rollouts, financial clearances, and district tours with the poll preparations. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now To clear bottlenecks ahead of the polls, the state has released 153 crore in pending panchayat bills, with an additional 300 crore expected soon. This is widely seen as part of efforts to strengthen rural governance and rebuild goodwill. At the same time, the govt is gearing up to launch the Rajiv Yuva Vikasam scheme on June 2, aimed at youth self-employment, which is likely to benefit around five lakh individuals, including Congress workers and unemployed youth. Ration cards distribution Another key component of the strategy is the mass distribution of ration cards to all eligible beneficiaries within June. Additionally, the pending Rythu Bharosa payments are expected to be credited to farmers by the end of the month—measures clearly designed to build public support ahead of the elections, sources say. Chief minister A Revanth Reddy's recent district tours and one-on-one meetings with MLAs are being viewed as groundwork for both governance review and candidate selection. Senior officials, sources say, have already received instructions to begin preparations for smooth election conduct. Crucially, delays in elections have stalled over 1,600 crore in 15th Finance Commission funds from the Centre, which can be released only after the formation of new governing bodies. While the village panchayat bodies' terms ended in Feb 2024, mandal and zilla parishads expired in July last year, and municipal bodies concluded terms last month, elections have not been conducted in over a year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Electoral readiness Analysts said the Congress govt appears to be moving quickly to balance welfare outreach with electoral readiness, signalling that the road to the local body elections has officially begun. With the Centre initiating a nationwide caste census, uncertainty remains around legislative approval for the state's proposed 42% reservation for BCs in local body elections. In light of this, the Congress govt is reportedly preparing to enforce the reservation independently during candidate selection.
