Oman invites name suggestions for a unified app for EVs

To promote sustainable mobility in the Sultanate of Oman, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) has launched a public survey to select the name of the unified national application for charging electric vehicles. The application will be a unified national platform that includes all electric vehicle charging operators in the Sultanate, under the supervision of the Ministry. Its goals are to facilitate users' access to all charging services in the Sultanate through a single application. Integrate all operators under one umbrella for a seamless and unified experience. As the first hydrogen station in Oman was launched this year, MTCIT plans to replace government vehicles with electric ones. There are also plans to implement a green corridors project for trucks powered by hydrogen. Future expansion of the application will include Gulf countries within the framework of cooperation in the field of green mobility. The suggested names for the application are EVNet OM - (Electric Vehicle Network Oman), a technical and professional name that reflects the national identity and the unified charging network. NEVO - (National Electric Vehicles Oman) An official and abbreviated name that carries a national and electric connotation, EV-Go OM - (Electric Vehicle Go Oman) - a direct marketing name that reflects readiness and mobility, ECO - (Electric Charges Oman) - a combination of environmental and functional meanings and EV Connect OM - (Electric Vehicle Connect Oman) A name that expresses the connection between users and stations within a single network. The participants in the survey can give another name suggestion for an app, apart from indicating plans, whether they own an electric vehicle or have any plans to purchase one within the next year. It may be noted that MTCIT has launched and implemented initiatives and projects towards net-zero emissions in areas such as legislation, governance, investment, and pilot projects. Achievements have been made in the use of biofuels in public transport, enhancing the infrastructure for electric vehicle chargers with more than 150 chargers installed by the end of 2024, implementing smart systems to reduce emissions, launching pilot hydrogen-powered vehicles, and converting port equipment to electric power. The number of registered electric vehicles exceeded 1,500 in the Sultanate in 2024.

Oman launches road safety campaign for khareef visitors

By OUR CORRESPONDENT Salalah – Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has launched a road safety awareness campaign called 'Dumtum Salimeen' to promote safe travel to Dhofar during khareef. The campaign is aimed at motorists, including families and visitors from Gulf Cooperation Council countries, who travel by road to Salalah. The initiative focuses on raising awareness about using recommended road routes and avoiding unsafe alternatives, particularly those passing through remote oil concession areas. MTCIT emphasised that while such routes may appear shorter, these lack essential services and pose safety risks, especially for families. The campaign advises drivers to take the Sultan Said bin Taimur Road (Adam-Haima-Thumrait), the main dual carriageway to Dhofar, which is equipped with the necessary infrastructure and is used by the majority of travellers. The Dumtum Salimeen campaign also aims to build public confidence in the preparedness of Oman's road infrastructure and highlight the government's ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance road safety. Special attention is being paid to travellers entering through border crossings such as Hafeet and Rub al Khali, with targeted messaging for those arriving from neighbouring GCC countries. MTCIT affirmed that the campaign is part of its broader strategy to promote road safety and ensure a secure travel environment during khareef, which witnesses a significant surge in road traffic towards Dhofar.

Oman: MTCIT plans unified EV charging app

Muscat – To accelerate green mobility ambitions, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has launched a nationwide community survey to choose a name for Oman's first unified national electric vehicle (EV) charging application. Currently under development, the platform will serve as the central access point for all EV charging stations in the sultanate, integrating services offered by various operators under one digital umbrella. Supervised by MTCIT, the application aims to streamline access for EV users, offering a seamless charging experience across Oman and, in the future, expanding to cover Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The ministry has invited the public to participate in an online survey to select the app's name from a shortlist or suggest alternatives. The shortlisted names include EVNet OM – a technical name highlighting a unified national EV network, NEVO – short for National Electric Vehicles Oman, EV-Go OM – a marketing-friendly option suggesting readiness and movement, ECO – representing both environmental focus and electric charging, and EV Connect OM – emphasising the user-station connectivity within a single network. Participants are also asked to indicate whether they currently own an EV, plan to purchase one or are simply contributing to the national conversation. The survey reflects Oman's inclusive approach to sustainable transformation, inviting citizens to shape what the ministry called a 'pioneering national identity' in the green transport sector. The survey period ends on August 9. This initiative is in line with MTCIT's broader strategy to achieve zero carbon neutrality in the transport sector. In January, the ministry announced that by the end of 2024 Oman had introduced 25 initiatives and pilot programmes focused on legislation, governance and infrastructure development for sustainable mobility. These include the use of biofuel in public transport, installation of over 150 EV chargers nationwide and registration of more than 1,500 EVs. Trials for hydrogen-powered vehicles are also underway. Looking ahead, the ministry aims to operationalise the unified EV charging platform this year. Future goals include replacing government vehicles with electric models and establishing dedicated green lanes for hydrogen trucks. MTCIT has called on the public to share the survey widely and support Oman's transition to a greener transport ecosystem. 'Your feedback matters to us,' the ministry noted in its statement. 'Be a partner in the green transformation journey towards a shared Gulf future.' © Apex Press and Publishing Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

H E Eng Said bin Hamoud al Ma'awali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said Oman's investment in infrastructure and innovation is enabling the country to strengthen its position as a regional gateway for trade. 'The transport and logistics sector is a vital enabler of Oman Vision 2040. Through integrated planning, policy development and advanced infrastructure, we are supporting economic growth while aligning with the country's broader sustainability objectives.' Dana Carmen Agarbicean, OBG's Country Director for Oman, said the sector's performance reflects Oman's ability to align long-term strategic goals with implementation. 'Oman's logistics sector is making significant strides in infrastructure development, trade facilitation and digitalisation. These efforts are establishing a foundation for sustainable growth and enhancing the country's competitiveness as a trade and investment destination.' © Apex Press and Publishing Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
