All PHCs in Tiruchy to start COPD screening from June 4

TIRUCHY: From June 4, all 84 primary health centres (PHCs) in the district, including those under the corporation, will launch structured screening for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a progressive lung condition often under-diagnosed in its early stages. The initiative, which is part of the COPD control programme announced recently in the state Assembly by Health Minister Ma Subramanian, aims to enable early identification of cases and ensure timely referral to specialists. It is also part of efforts, to maintain through the PHCs, a digital registry integrated with the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam (MTM) portal, supporting both long-term treatment and preparedness during respiratory outbreaks. Under the new programme, adults above 35 years presenting with symptoms such as chronic cough (lasting more than eight weeks), sputum production and breathlessness, and particularly with a history of smoking, indoor biomass fuel use and dust-heavy occupations, will be screened for COPD at PHCs. If needed, they will be referred to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH).

State records 38 new Covid-19 cases in a day

Chennai: Tamil Nadu recorded 38 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, health minister Ma Subramanian said. In May, the state reported 293 cases of Covid-19, among which 148 patients are still on the active list, he said. "There is no reason to panic," he told reporters. The state sent 26 samples to National Institute of Virology for whole genome sequencing. "The lab confirmed that none of the samples contained any virulent form of the virus. All samples were Omicron variants, specifically JN.1, LF.7, NB.1.8.1, MV.1, and BA.3. No new mutations were seen," he said. The surge in Covid-19 has been recorded internationally. Across India, around 1,800 cases were detected. "But in most people, the disease is self-limiting. People complain of fever, fatigue, cold, and sore throat," he said. "One person with a co-morbid condition succumbed to the infection recently," he said. Directorate of public health issued a notification asking doctors and hospitals across the state to report influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) cases to the district surveillance unit, which will be monitored by the state surveillance units to facilitate a timely public health response, including micro-containment, besides early diagnosis and treatment for infected people. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Hospitals have been advised to keep medical facilities such as oxygen, medicines, and manpower ready in case of a surge. Srirangam GH lacks space and staff, needs upgrade to new location: MP

Trichy: Trichy MP Durai Vaiko has recommended the relocation of Srirangam govt hospital from the current cramped location to a spacious facility to improve the healthcare services . The MP conducted an inspection at the hospital in Trichy city on Monday, and appreciated the doctors and nurses for continuing the medical services amid infrastructure lapses and staff shortage. Stating that the buildings in the hospital are 80 to 150 years old, some of them built during British colonial rule, the MP said that challenges persist for medical professionals to provide healthcare services. Situated on Gandhi Road near Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple's rajagopuram, the MP said that the upcoming satellite bus terminus near the hospital would further increase traffic congestion in the vicinity. "Srirangam govt hospital is one of the oldest hospitals. Since the road's level has gone up compared to the hospital's ground level, rainwater seeps into the hospital during monsoons. To decongest Srirangam, I would recommend shifting the govt hospital to a new area. We need at least five acres of land for the hospital," Durai Vaiko said. He added that the health minister Ma Subramanian and district collector would be approached with the demands for relocating the hospital and to fill vacancies among doctors and nurses in the GH. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Replacing the old buildings in Srirangam hospital with new infrastructure is likely to cost around 30 crore. Funfing from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) (phase II) is also considered. "State govt is under financial distress, and vacancies in doctors and nurses are not only in Srirangam GH but across the state. I will do the needful to fill the vacancies," the MP added. Later, the MP conducted a joint review meeting with NHAI officials from Thanjavur project implementation unit and residents of Palpannai – Thuvakudi stretch of Trichy-Thanjavur NH that lacks service roads. "School education minister and I are following up with the demand raised by the public for a service road with the NHAI. Lack of streetlights was also appraised with the NHAI," the MP added.

24 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu have replied to NMC's showcause notice, says state health minister

Salem: Health minister Ma Subramanian on Thursday said 24 out of 34 medical colleges had sent their explanations to the showcause notices issued by the National Medical Council on deficiencies in faculty and services, labs and surgeries. "Only 10 colleges need to submit their explanations, which will be send soon," the minister said while speaking to reporters in the city. On shortage of doctors, the minister said 2,462 doctors have been appointed and steps will be taken to fill vacancies. During the recent NEET exam , women candidates were asked to remove their mangalsutra (thaali) before entering the centre, he said. "There was also an incident where a husband removed his wife's mangalsutra to help her write the exam, which is why we are insisting on the NEET exemption," the minister replied. Earlier, Subramanian and tourism minister R Rajendran took part in the opening of a two-day national health mission seminar in Yercaud. Subramanian launched three key initiatives at the event- a rehabilitation centre for mentally challenged individuals, an IVF centre for economically disadvantaged families at SGMKMCH, and a mobile application for haemophilia patients, which will assist around 1,000 individuals. After the launch, Subramanian said PET SCAN facilities are now available in government hospitals in Salem, Coimbatore, Thanjavur, Tirunelveli, and Kanchipuram, with plans to expand to five more hospitals this fiscal year. Furthermore, MRI SCAN facilities are being introduced in 17 government hospitals across the state, he said. MPs T M Selvaganapathy and T Malaiarasan, health secretary P Senthil Kumar, Salem district collector Dr R Brinda Devi, National Health Mission director Dr A Arun Thamburaj, and medical professionals from several government hospitals participated in the event.

Adequate faculty in medical colleges, NMC notice won't affect admissions: Health Minister Ma Subramanian

CHENNAI: After the National Medical Commission (NMC) issued show-cause notices to 35 of 36 government medical colleges in the state, citing various shortcomings, including inadequate faculty strength, Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Wednesday indicated that the notices will not affect student admissions in these colleges. Addressing the reporters, the minister said 26 colleges have already sent their replies with appropriate explanation to the NMC last Friday, and three others will send their replies on Wednesday. The director of medical education and research has also issued guidelines for the remaining colleges to submit their explanations by next Friday. Although such notices citing certain discrepancies are issued to a few colleges every year, it raised concerns this year since almost all government medical colleges in the state had received notices. On the alleged shortage of doctors, Subramanian said all vacancies in medical colleges were filled up as per the sanctioned strength. There were 415 vacancies, of which 328 were filled initially, and the remaining 87 were filled on Tuesday. A few months ago, 2,246 doctor vacancies were filled by the Medical Services Recruitment Board (MSRB), keeping in mind the vacancies that were going to arise, he said. Not only those with MBBS qualification, but doctors who completed their PG were also selected in the recruitment process. The minister further said that steps are being taken to fill vacant posts of associate professors and professors, through promotion counselling.
