A-League: Daniel Arzani leaves Victory to join Ferencvaros
Don't miss out on the headlines from Football. Followed categories will be added to My News. Socceroos playmaker Daniel Arzani has left Melbourne Victory to join Hungarian champions Ferencvaros. The move marks a return to Europe for 26-year-old Arzani, who after leaving Melbourne City in 2018 to sign as a teenager in 2018 with English Premier League giants Manchester City had loan spells with Celtic (Scotland), Utrecht (Netherlands), AGF (Denmark) and Lommel (Belgium), returned to the A-League in 2022 to join Macarthur FC. Arzani returned to Melbourne the following year to link with the Victory, where he has spent the past two seasons, helping the club to successive A-League grand final appearances. 'My time at Melbourne Victory has been incredibly rewarding,' Arzani said. 'The club has played a key role in my growth both on and off the pitch over the past couple of seasons, allowing me to enjoy my football and do what I do best. 'While I am excited for the next chapter, I will always be grateful for my time at Melbourne Victory and the enormous support I received from the club's members and fans.' Arzani's time at the Victory has also coincided with his return to the national team after an absence of six years. He has scored one goal – against Hungary in June 2018 – in his 10 appearances for the Socceroos. Arzani's move to Ferencvaros, who are coached by Irishman and former Tottenham and Liverpool striker Robbie Keane, could also give him the chance to compete in the UEFA Champions League, with his new club in the competition's second qualifying round. Arzani – who had also been linked with a move to Scottish club Hearts – is the second player in the past two days to leave the Victory, with left-back Kasey Bos also heading to Europe after a signing a four-year-deal with German Bundesliga club Mainz 05 for a deal that will reportedly net the Melbourne club a transfer fee of $880,000. Ref standards prompt Macarthur captain Germain to quit
Macarthur's bid for an A-League Men finals berth has been dealt a hammer blow, with captain Valere Germain citing Australian refereeing standards as reason to terminate his contract. Bulls officials confirmed to AAP on Monday that Germain's request has been granted, with the 34-year-old forward expected to take up a contract offer in Japan. "It's disappointing that any player, a marquee player, especially one of the quality of Valere Germain, is frustrated by the refereeing in this country," Macarthur chairman Gino Marra told AAP. Macarthur FC confirms the departure of captain Valère Germain as he pursues an overseas club sincerely thanks Valère for his dedication and contributions to Macarthur FC and wishes him all the best in the future.📰 Read more here: — Macarthur FC (@mfcbulls) February 17, 2025 "I'm sure many fans and clubs feel the same way. "Valere has been a true professional at all times at the club and we wish him and his family all the very best." The French forward is understood to have privately voiced concerns that he was being targeted by rival players and that officials did not properly protect him. Germain was due to face a Football Australia (FA) hearing this week after being handed a show-cause notice for allegedly making a lewd gesture at a match official. But Macarthur had since advised FA they would not be pursuing their appeal, with Germain asking for and receiving a release. It is not the first time Germain has fallen foul of Australian match officials, missing the club's Australia Cup final victory after being sent off in a semi-final win over South Melbourne this season. While his hot-headedness has landed him in trouble, there is no doubt the Frenchman has been a valuable member of the Bulls squad since arriving from Europe for the start of the 2023-24 season. The striker has registered 19 goals across 45 ALM games and Macarthur have been pleased with his mentoring of the club's young players. Jed Drew and Ariath Piol have secured overseas moves since coming into the Macarthur first team and playing alongside Germain. With Piol, Drew and now Germain leaving, Macarthur's frontline is set to undergo a major shift as coach Mile Sterjovski tries to keep the Campbelltown-based club in the hunt for the finals. Macarthur are seventh on the ALM ladder on goal difference but have just one win in their past five outings after Sunday's defeat to the eight-placed Western Sydney Wanderers. "It's unfortunate that Valere is leaving the club," Sterjovski said in a statement. "He is a great person and professional who gave his best to the club. I know that he loved playing for the club. "It's great to see what we have done this season, and how it has attracted interest for our players both young and experienced."

Bulls star to appeal ban length
Macarthur FC skipper Valere Germain will fight to have a two-game ban for the use of an offensive gesture reduced. Germain made the gesture in stoppage-time of his side's 2-2 weekend draw with Western United at Campbelltown Sports Stadium. Football Australia's independent match review panel deemed the gesture was made towards referee Casey Reibelt – who missed the incident – and banned the French striker for two matches for the use of 'offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures against a match official'. Re-live Sunday's contest through our camera roll 🎞️# — Macarthur FC (@mfcbulls) February 12, 2025 However, it's understood that Germain claimed he was making the gesture towards a friend in the crowd in a joking manner. Germain has referred the matter to FA's independent disciplinary and ethics committee in a bid to have the ban reduced to the minimum one-game ban. The appeal is expected to be heard this week, but regardless of the outcome, the 34-year-old will miss Macarthur's clash against Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday at CommBank Stadium through suspension.
