Macau's House of Dancing Water returns with 3.7 million gallons of spectacle

Macau's biggest indoor spectacle is making a splash yet again, as it returns to City of Dreams after a nearly five-year hiatus. House of Dancing Water, which debuted in 2010, made waves regionally and beyond for its ambitious scope and scale that required a boundary-pushing 2,000-seat theatre for what was the world's largest permanent water-based show at the time. Advertisement Directed by Franco Dragone , the show was forced to shut down in 2020 due to Covid-19. After Dragone's death in 2022, his long-time collaborator, Giuliano Peparini, took up the mantle, working with veteran martial-arts choreographer Jaden He Jingde to relaunch the production. Now, the show goes on, with a fresh narrative, cutting-edge technology and a world-class 300-strong cast. The House of Dancing Water, Macau's biggest indoor spectacle, is back. Photo: The House of Dancing Water The story will be familiar to those who have visited previously: a brave stranger embarks on a quest to rescue Princess Aani, who is being held captive by the Dark Queen, with water serving as a recurring motif throughout the 80-minute run time. To balance the show's dramatic intensity, a new character, the Sailor, injects moments of comic relief. The purpose-built Dancing Water Theatre features a pool holding 3.7 million gallons of water, more than five times the volume of an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The venue has been refurbished to improve sightlines, accessibility and seating comfort, while technological enhancements allow for a more immersive experience, including a stage capable of transforming from a dry platform to a vast aquatic arena in under a minute. Photo: The House of Dancing Water One of the show's most arresting moments is the revamped Golden Boat sequence. This set piece has been re-engineered with a state-of-the-art water-hydraulic system allowing the massive ship to glide across the water, in a spectacle that feels both grand and intimate. Complementing this is the Human Chandelier 2.0, an act in which acrobats perform gravity-defying manoeuvres on flying chandeliers, pushing the boundaries of physical artistry and technical precision.

Dragon Boat Festival: Hong Kong set for 3.2 million cross-border trips

About 3.2 million trips are expected to be made across Hong Kong's borders during the Tuen Ng Festival long weekend, with a peak of about 540,000 arrivals at land crossings on Sunday. The Immigration Department said on Thursday that most of the cross-border traffic would pass through land checkpoints from neighbouring Macau and Shenzhen, accounting for 85 per cent, or 2.73 million, of the trips. Hong Kong will be hosting citywide dragon boat races over the weekend, with authorities anticipating a peak of 570,000 outbound trips on Saturday and 540,000 inbound ones on Sunday. The department said the Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau Spur Line and Shenzhen Bay control points were set to be busy, forecasting daily averages of about 230,000, 200,000 and 140,000 trips, respectively. The holiday, also known as Dragon Boat Festival, runs from Saturday to Monday on the mainland this year. 'To avoid congestion and longer-than-usual waiting times for immigration clearance, the Immigration Department advises all land boundary passengers to plan in advance, avoid making their journeys during busy periods, and keep track of radio and TV broadcasts on traffic conditions at various control points,' a department spokesman said.

2 top Hong Kong taxi fleets approved for pre-booked pick ups at border crossings

Two of the city's premium taxi fleets will be allowed to pick up pre-booked passengers at designated locations within prohibited zones at the Shenzhen Bay Port and the local control point of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge from Friday. Advertisement The Hong Kong government said on Thursday that, starting the next day, passengers would be able to book their journeys through the trial-run fleets Joie and SynCab's mobile apps or using other compatible online ride-hailing channels. The fleets' citywide services include designated pickup points at the two ports. The collection spots are located near the crossings' passenger clearance areas. 'The measure provides convenience to members of the public and visitors to enjoy quality fleet taxi services, and enables fleet operators to collect operational data and passenger feedback during trial operations, with a view to providing reliable services of higher quality at the time of official service commencement,' the Transport Department said. People wait for cross-boundary coaches at the Shenzhen Bay Port.
