I've Tried Making My iPad An Almost Mac With iPadOS 26 Beta
I can see the light on the horizon. In the near future I'm carrying just an iPad around, and it's my full everyday computer. The Macbook becomes a distant memory. Apple hasn't made my ultimate fantasy true yet, but with iPadOS 26 it comes closer than ever.. The newest operating system for iPads, expected to officially debut this fall, is now available to try in a public beta. It adds Mac-like features galore including a new multitasking mode, flexible windows, little window-sizing buttons that can snap things into formation, menu bars, even a Preview app. The little mouse icon you get in keyboard-and-trackpad mode is now like a Mac arrow, too. It's a lot to take in and try. I generally like all the changes Apple's made on iPadOS 26, and while I normally recommend people skip public betas and just get the final version in the fall, the changes this time are probably worth trying now if you're at all interested in Mac-ifying your iPad. I'm using the iPad as a Mac replacement to write and even file this article now, and it has its ups and downs. Watch this: iPadOS 26 Almost Turns Your iPad Into a Mac 01:22 Menu Bars (sort of) replicate menus on the Mac Apps now have pull-down menus in iPadOS 26 that can show a whole bunch of actions that were previously hidden, or relegated to icons, gestures and obscure keyboard shortcuts. Apple auto-populates menu bars for existing iPad apps with all the keyboard shortcut actions in that app, plus a general set of actions that are consistent across apps. I love the change.: Menu bars hide until you scroll over them with a mouse cursor with keyboard/trackpad, or pull them down with your finger. They don't get in the way. The nested list of extra functions is easier for me to browse than guessing at whatever user interface magic trick I was supposed to know in that app and forgot. For writing - like this story - it makes using the iPad feel even more laptop-like. But, as I expect in beta software, some apps aren't working perfectly with menu bars yet. Google Docs is currently acting weird, for instance. Also, on iPad, Google tries to force you to launch into its Docs standalone app rather than write in-browser. That's a taste of the strangeness that still lurks in iPadOS 26, and hopefully gets fixed by the fall launch. Much like what Apple promised back at WWDC, it's more possible to stack lots of apps at once. Your limit is mostly screen size. Apple Screenshot Windows are far more flexible Thanks to new sets of colored dots in the upper left of each window, which mirror what's already on Macs, you can minimize/maximize/resize iPad windows a lot more fluidly. Tiling options pop up in the same way they do on Macs, and any window can be dragged around and resized. The window size freedom also seems more flexible. Before, the UI would try to bounce you back to certain size options. There are still minimums to how much you can shrink the width and length of apps, but it feels better. You can also keep stacking and layering windows as much as you'd like within your particular iPad's limits. Apple's been somewhat vague on this aspect, but more powerful iPads can simultaneously layer more apps. On an M1 11-inch iPad Air, I simultaneously had 11 apps open and going without it stopping me. I didn't see any signs of limits ahead. Yes, my small screen started to feel like an impossibly layered clutter, and I had no way of seeing everything at once unless I swiped up with three fingers to see icons of all my open apps, but it was still serious multitasking. The layout and design of certain apps still isn't ideal for all this new screen sizing. I find some apps still have way too much empty space or large mobile-friendly icons, and I wish they'd shrink to more laptop-style layouts to fit the new possibilities. Google's Docs app is a prime example. Safari still isn't quite the same as Mac browser I still find working in-browser on an iPad to be a weird experience. iPads are more about apps, just like the iPhone. Also, web pages aren't always going to load or function the same on an iPad as on a Mac. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't. My work CMS, where I produce this and other articles, works mostly fine in iPadOS Safari, but not on Google's Chrome iPadOS browser. Some in-browser tools don't load or work the same. It's still a bit hit and miss, and even though it's gotten better, I feel a lot more comfortable with a Mac's fully functional browsers. Other apps may vary, too That's the biggest ongoing challenge with living your life on an iPad vs a Mac: the app libraries are literally different. Apple's been improving the crossflow feel between both, and the Files browser on iPad now shows folders and stackable views in ways that feel more Mac-like. But dragging and dropping files can still feel weird depending on how an app is prepped to handle it. Dragging photos into browsers doesn't feel the same as on a Mac, for instance. It's close, but a little different. Pro apps on iPads still need to evolve. Apple has a subscription-based version of its Final Cut and Logic Pro apps on iPad while you can fully buy the versions on Mac. Some art tools on iPad exceed what Macs can do, but other graphics or coding tools are likely to still feel better on Macs. I don't live in those realms much. For my life, I'm more of a writer and editor living in CMS and with a bunch of work apps. I can get things done on the iPad now better than before, but there are some uncanny moments. That's why I'm still using a Mac for work. But I'm ready to bridge, and I hope iPadOS 26 is part of that bridge. Try it out, but as good as the improvements are, it's not all there yet.

Gabe Newell's daily routine is 'get up, work, go scuba diving,' says he's been 'retired for a long time' but works 7 days a week: 'The things I get to do every day are super-awesome'
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Gabe Newell, the co-founder of Valve Corporation and the driving force behind much of the company's unique philosophy, has had a much less public-facing role in recent years. Newell still turns up for things like the Steam Deck launch and official documentaries, but much of his time now is spent on one of his (several) superyachts, and on his other companies' projects: He co-founded Starfish Neuroscience, a company focused on neural interfaces (popularly known as "brain chips"), and Inkfish, a marine research operation. Newell also remains magnificently quixotic, popping up every so often to talk about things like when a shark went for him, and now he's re-surfaced to do an interview with a YouTube channel that has 19 subscribers (Valve confirmed to PCG that the interview is legit). Zalkar Saliev "shares powerful interviews and lifestyle stories with successful men across the US," and his channel has previously played host to employees of Amazon and Microsoft. And now Gabe Newell's on there: well, some short clips are on there, with a full interview to follow later. The ocean-loving billionaire is asked, "What is the daily routine for Mr Gabe?" I'd hesitate to call Newell "Gaben" to his face so Mr Gabe is quite the framing. "My daily routine," begins Newell, "I get up, I work, I go scuba-diving, work some more, [then] either go on a second scuba dive or I go to the gym and work out. I live on a boat so I just hang out with everybody on the boat. Then I work. "I work seven days a week: I'm working from my bedroom as you can tell. I like working, it's fun, to me it doesn't feel like work. The kinds of things that I get to do every day are super-awesome." Indeed, we can see from the clip, which alternates between Saliev's Macbook view and the camera feed, that Newell appears to be sitting on the end of his bed. The view makes it impossible to say for certain, but the IRL Saxton Hale is looking good for his age and more trim generally: clearly all the scuba-diving and gym-going has paid-off. Newell goes on to say that he's effectively retired, inasmuch as he only does stuff that interests him now, but the man's work ethic is clearly second-to-none. "I've said it before but, when you retire, you want to like stop doing your horrible job and go do what is sort of most fun and entertaining," says Newell. "In that sense I've been retired for a long time." Newell goes on to give some examples of what's currently taking up his time. "In one of the companies we're working on an aerosol pathogen detection device so you can see all the pathogens that are in the air. Brain-computer interfaces are incredibly cool and all of the associated neuroscience is incredibly cool." The upshot? Talk about life goals: "I just work all the time," ends Newell. "But it's not like 'oh my god I'm up late at night slaving away on stuff.' It's more like 'I can't go to sleep because I'm having fun', you know?" Expect more to come from this interview, even if Newell's current interests have moved (somewhat) away from pc gaming. Newell's spectacular success and unusual perspectives have created an intense cult of personality around the man's pronouncements, but as the above shows some of it is really quite simple. As a Valve exec once observed, Newell's real superpower is in how he "delighted in people on the team just being really good at what they did." Solve the daily Crossword

"It's Been 6 Days": Missing 19-Year-Old's Family Alleges Police Inaction
Najeeb Ahmed, a 27-year-old student at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, went missing in 2016. He has not been found till date. Cut to 2025, Sneha Debnath, a 19-year-old student of Delhi University, has been missing for six days. Ms Debnath is a student at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College. Her family, originally from Tripura, has been staying in Delhi for many years. On July 7, she went to drop a friend at the Sarai Rohilla railway station. A cab driver dropped Sneha near Signature Bridge, but after some time, her mobile was switched off. She has been missing since. An alleged "suicide note" has been found from the student's room in Delhi, which says she had decided to "end my life" by jumping from the Signature Bridge. Bipasha Debnath, her sister, said the letter is just "crisp four lines". "I mean, a suicide letter can't be of four lines, right? It doesn't make sense at all. If you read the letter, there's no clue as to why she was depressed, what was happening, nothing. It's just crisp four lines. And the location was mentioned there, Signature Bridge," the 24-year-old sister of Sneha told NDTV. The elder sister pointed out that Sneha was brilliant at studies, but she was very young in years and someone may have manipulated her. "Very, very specifically, the location was mentioned. If she wanted to die, there are a lot of ways to do it at home, nearby. You don't have to go all the way to a place where 60 cameras are not working. It does show something, right? It could be somebody has told her, somebody could have, you know, manipulated her. She's just 19. She could be an overachiever. She's smart. At the end of the day, she's just 19 years old," said the elder sister, with her mother and a cousin standing next to her outside the Mehrauli police station. Distressed by the apathy of the cops, Bipasha further said she has been running from one place to the other and is being told "magic doesn't happen in a day". "I am alone. I have to look after my parents...I am running from this place to that place to third place to fourth place. And everywhere I go, I hear the same thing. The magic doesn't happen in one day. It's been six days," she said. "What are you looking for? What are you getting? You don't even have an assigned unit till now. My investigating officer should have time to look into the case. I am not blaming him. He is the most sensible officer. He is not getting the time to investigate. He is so busy with other work," the sister lamented. Asked about the response she got from the cops when she told them about the alleged note, Bipasha said they dismissed it as a "made-up thing". "You are not getting a body... So what is it, sir? Even if she is a runaway, she must have made calls to 10 different people, right? You check it. You are not getting anything from there as well. We have given you the Macbook. It's been six days. You are not able to open the Macbook. You have the cyber unit. You have the forensic unit. And it's the national capital. Kids hack Instagram these days. Are you even coordinating with your team? I feel like we are doing more work," she said. "How will you know? Your CCTV camera is not working. You can't do anything. You can't get a call record. You can't open your MacBook," said Bipasha, who has been making the rounds of the police station. Delhi Police and a team from the National Disaster Response Force of NDRF are conducting search operation in the Yamuna for the missing student. Sneha's mother, Pinki Debnath, too has rejected the claims that her daughter was "depressed" or reserved. "She was not sad at all. She was with me all the time. She used to joke with me all day. She would say, 'Mom, you are so short,'" her mother said. Pinki Debanth said all she wants is to be with her daughter. "My daughter should be found from anywhere. I don't want anything else. I just want my daughter," she said, fighting back tears.

Apple may bring this ‘obsolete' Macbook model with an iPhone chip
Apple is reportedly planning to launch an affordable Macbook that may be powered by an iPhone chip . According to analyst Ming-Chi-Kuo, the rumoured MacBook model is expected to enter mass production in the fourth quarter of 2025 or early 2026. Taking to microblogging platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Kuo says that the low-cost MacBook may come powered by A18 Pro chipset , the one that powers the current iPhone 16 Pro models. In the post, Kuo says that 'Apple aims to return total MacBook shipments to the COVID-19 peak of around 25 million units in 2026 (vs. an estimated 20 million units in 2025).' 'The more-affordable MacBook is projected to account for 5–7 million units for 2026,' he added. While there is no official confirmation, the upcoming MacBook model is likely to be a successor to the 12-inch Retina MacBook that debuted 10 years ago. The 12-inch MacBook gave an early look at the future of Mac computers. Introducing the new MacBook then, CEO Tim Cook called it a "reinvention" of the notebook. Years later, the product was discontinued after the launch of the 2019 MacBook Air. As previously mentioned, it is said to run on A18 Pro processor. Colour variants may include silver, blue, pink, and yellow, the analyst says. The affordable MacBook may debut in late 2025 or early 2026. In another news, Apple is developing at least seven head-mounted devices across two product lines, with smart glasses positioned to become the next major consumer electronics trend, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's latest forecast. The company's aggressive timeline spans from 2025 to 2028, with Ray-Ban-style smart glasses expected to lead the charge in 2027. The company's first consumer smart glasses will enter mass production in Q2 2027, targeting 3-5 million unit shipments in their debut year. These Ray-Ban competitors will feature voice control, gesture recognition, camera capabilities, and AI-powered environmental sensing without display functionality. Kuo predicts Apple's entry will push total smart glasses market shipments beyond 10 million units in 2027, transforming a niche category into mainstream adoption.
