What's just happened to six young Welsh rugby players hints at brighter times on horizon Six Welsh players have been nominated for an award Scarlets back Macs Page on his way to scoring against Munster (Image: Huw Evans Agency ) Six Welsh players have been nominated for the United Rugby Championship's Next-Gen player of the season award. Scarlets trio Blair Murray, Ellis Mee and Macs Page are all up for the award, as are Ospreys fly-half Dan Edwards, Dragons centre Aneurin Owen and departing Cardiff wing Gabriel Hamer-Webb. The Scarlets lead the way in terms of a URC club that provided the most nominees, while Wales as a whole offers the most players on the shortlist along with South Africa. ‌ Players who were 23 and under at the start of the season and had no more than five international caps are eligible for the award. They also needed to have made nine appearances in the league this season to make the shortlist. ‌ There are 16 players on the shortlist - with six from Wales and South Africa, two from Scotland and one each from Italy and Ireland. It's unsurprising that back-three pairing Murray and Mee make the list, having both made their Test debuts for Wales this season after joining the Scarlets last summer. Twenty-year-old centre Page has also enjoyed a fine breakthrough campaign, leading to his first Wales call-up for the upcoming tour of Japan this summer. Article continues below Ospreys fly-half Edwards has been superb for Mark Jones' side this season, making his Wales debut in the Six Nations. He finished the campaign as the third-highest scorer in the league, having notched up 112 points. Dragons centre Owen has been a constant during a difficult season for the Men of Gwent, featuring in every league game. ‌ Welsh-qualified wing Hamer-Webb enjoyed a strong end to the season - crossing for six tries in the last four matches of the campaign. Unfortunately for Cardiff, the 24-year-old won't be staying at the Arms Park next season - with a move to the Gallagher Premiership on the cards. In terms of other nations, the Bulls, Stormers, Lions and Edinburgh all have two nominees. Zebre wing Simone Gesi has made more clean breaks than any other player, while Lions full-back Quan Horn is fourth in terms of defenders beaten with 51. The winner of the award will be determined by a media vote. ‌ URC Next-Gen player of the season nominees: Quan Horn, Emirates Lions Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Vodacom Bulls Matt Currie, Edinburgh Rugby ‌ Gabe Hamer-Webb, Cardiff Rugby Henco van Wyk, Emirates Lions Ellis Mee, Scarlets ‌ Jack Boyle, Leinster Rugby Cameron Hanekom, Vodacom Bulls Suleiman Hartzenberg, DHL Stormers ‌ Andre-Hugo Venter, DHL Stormers Macs Page, Scarlets Simone Gesi, Zebre Parma ‌ Aneurin Owen, Dragons RFC Paddy Harrison, Edinburgh Rugby Blair Murray, Scarlets Article continues below Dan Edwards, Ospreys

Young Welsh star scores sensational solo try as viewers rave about emerging talent

Young Scarlets star Macs Page scored a superb solo score at the weekend, earning rave reviews from fans. Going up against Munster in the United Rugby Championship, Page had been introduced on 56 minutes for Ioan Nicholas. Scarlets had put-in at the scrum and Page would make his impact barely 60 seconds after coming on. Vaea Fifita peeled off the back, feeding Gareth Davies, who slipped a pass into Ioan Lloyd. The latter then sprayed a beautiful flat pass into current Wales squad member Ellis Mee. Page handed off the first man and used his electric pace to burn down the right channel before kicking, chasing and grounding for a brilliant score. "Mee gets the new man, Page, away," began commentator Ryle Nugent on Premier Sports. "Page will kick and chase, and what an introduction! Macs Page in. It's exactly what you warned against Alan Quinlan." "Page does outstanding there," added former Ireland international Quinlan. "It's an outstanding score, brilliant pace, great little kick as well." The Scarlets conversion had already been taken when referee Federico Vedovelli was asked to confer with the TMO. There was a lengthy check to see if Page had grounded the ball, with Munster man Paddy Patterson seemingly doing a good job of preventing Page from dotting down. Cue an understandable reaction from Page, with commentator Nugent joking: "You don't need to be a lip reader to see what Macs Page thinks about it!" Despite the Irish commentary team assuming the try would be overturned, Vedovelli said: "No evidence to change my on-field decision." CAIS SCARLETS! Dwylo gwych gan Ellis Mee ac yna sgiliau anhygoel gan Macs Page sy'n croesi am gais cyntaf y Scarlets! After a long TMO decision the try stands and what a try! v @S4C English Commentary#BKTURC | @scarlets_rugby — S4C Rygbi (@S4CRygbi) February 15, 2025 "Macs Page has a razzle dazzle not many in Wales do, in my opinion wing is right for him at this stage and I can see him there internationally," wrote one person on social media. "Macs Page is serious box office! Cap him in the summer!" wrote another fan. "Macs Page that is outrageous," said one. Page has been ear-marked as one of Welsh rugby brightest young talents, earning high praise from former Wales internationals Alex Cuthbert and Richie Rees. He first turned heads when scoring another fine try against Zebre Parma in October. The 20-year-old typically plays at outside centre, but as his latest score shows, it seems he could well be deployed on the wing in future. Page hails from west Wales and is a product of the infamous Crymych RFC.
