Maddie, a Coonhound Who Awed Instagram by Balancing on Things, Dies at 14

Around 2011, burned out from his corporate photography job, Theron Humphrey hatched an idea to travel the country, interview people and take their portraits in all 50 states. He quit his job, crowdfunded $16,000 and prepared to hit the road for a year in his 1994 Toyota pickup truck. But there was one thing missing from his travel plans: a dog. Mr. Humphrey, who was 28 at the time, had never owned a dog, but growing up in the South, hounds were always around. He typed 'coonhound' into an online registry of adoptable pets, and an image of a caramel and white spotted dog with squinty eyes was the first result. 'I was like, 'Oh my gosh. She looks like a little deer.' I loved her speckles,' said Mr. Humphrey, who is now 42. 'That same day, I drove to the animal shelter, and I went to see her, and I left with a dog. I had no idea what I was doing.' In the years that followed, Mr. Humphrey crisscrossed the country and snapped tens of thousands of photos of Maddie, the coonhound he adopted that day. The pair traveled to 48 states, published two photography books and amassed more than 1.2 million Instagram followers along the way. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

School Spirits Season 3: Release date rumors, cast updates and what to expect next

By Aman Shukla Published on July 18, 2025, 19:30 IST Last updated July 18, 2025, 12:04 IST Okay, School Spirits fans, let's talk about that Season 2 finale—my jaw is still on the floor! The supernatural teen drama on Paramount+ has us all obsessed with its mix of ghostly mysteries, heartfelt friendships, and those 'what just happened?!' cliffhangers. With Season 3 officially greenlit, we've rounded up the latest scoop on when it might drop, who's coming back, and what we can expect from Maddie Nears and the gang at Split River High. Let's dive in! Release Date Rumors: When Can We Expect Season 3? Paramount+ gave us the good news in March 2025: School Spirits is coming back for a third season! While they haven't pinned down an exact premiere date, they're aiming for 2026. Looking at the show's history, Season 1 hit screens in March 2023, and Season 2 landed in January 2025. So, I'm guessing we could see Season 3 sometime between March and June 2026, depending on how filming goes. Word on the street (or rather, posts on X) suggests production might kick off in September 2025. That gives them plenty of time to work their magic with those spooky special effects. Cast Updates: Who's Returning and Any New Faces? The core cast of School Spirits is expected to return, bringing back the characters we've grown to love (or love to question). Here's who's likely to reprise their roles: Peyton List as Maddie Nears, the teen navigating the afterlife while unraveling the mystery of her 'death.' Kristian Ventura as Simon Elroy, Maddie's best friend, whose shocking Season 2 finale twist has fans buzzing. Spencer MacPherson as Xavier Baxter, Maddie's ex-boyfriend, who now has the ability to see ghosts. Kiara Pichardo as Nicole Herrera, one of Maddie's loyal friends in the living world. Sarah Yarkin as Rhonda Rosen, the cynical ghost with a sharp wit. Nick Pugliese as Charley, Maddie's ghostly confidant. Rainbow Wedell as Claire Zomer, part of Maddie's living friend group. Josh Zuckerman as Mr. Martin, the mysterious teacher-spirit with secrets of his own. The fate of Milo Manheim as Wally Clark, the lovable football-playing ghost, is uncertain after Season 2's cliffhanger hinted at him possibly crossing over. However, the show's creators have teased that 'anything could happen,' so we're hopeful Wally's story isn't over yet. Jess Gabor as Janet Hamilton, the spirit who hijacked Maddie's body, is also likely to return, especially since she chose to stay in the afterlife to help the other ghosts. As for new faces, no official casting announcements have been made, but Season 2 introduced characters like Quinn (Ci Hang Ma), and the trend of adding fresh spirits or living characters could continue. With Split River High's supernatural lore expanding, expect some exciting additions to shake things up. What to Expect in Season 3 Heads-up: Season 2 spoilers ahead! If you're not caught up, go binge on Paramount+ first! Season 2 left us with so many questions, and we are dying to see how they wrap things up. Here's what we think we're in for, based on the finale and some teases from the creators: Simon's Wild Cliffhanger: Okay, Simon ending up in Mr. Martin's scar? Mind. Blown. How does a living person get stuck in a ghost's trauma space? Is he dead? Trapped? Something else entirely? The showrunners said they want to explore what it means to 'lose someone,' which makes me think Simon's story is about to get super emotional. Wally's Big Moment: That light in Wally's scar had me holding my breath. It looked like he was about to cross over, but maybe he'll pull a Janet and choose to stay. His connection with Maddie is too sweet to end now, right? We are hoping we get more of their slow-burn romance, even if it's complicated by her being back in her body. Maddie's New Normal: Maddie finally got her body back, but now she can't see the high school ghosts—only her dad's spirit at the hospital. What's up with that? Will she find a way to reconnect with Rhonda, Charley, and the others? Xavier might be the key since he can see ghosts now, but we are curious how that'll change their dynamic. Xavier's Ghost Vision: Speaking of Xavier, his new ability to see spirits is a game-changer. Will he team up with Maddie to solve the school's mysteries, or will this cause drama? We are betting on both. The School's Secrets: Season 2 hinted that Split River High is hiding some seriously dark history. That red glow over the school, Mr. Martin's weird experiments, and the whole 'scar' concept? There's a bigger mystery here, and we think Season 3 will dig into why these spirits are trapped.
