Surprise! Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 found to be thinner than 'world's slimmest foldable'

Last year when Honor released its Magic V3 foldable phone it took home the honor of being the thinnest foldable on the market at 9.2mm closed and 4.34mm unfolded. This year Honor is claiming that the Magic V5 is the "world's slimmest foldable," but a recent comparison video between the V5 and Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 seems to show that the newest Fold is microns thinner. We unfortunately can't get the Honor Magic V5 in the U.S., but Honor's marketing materials claim that the Ivory White color way is 8.8mm when folded, which is 0.1mm thinner than Samsung's Z Fold 7 measuring in at 8.9mm. There is no accurate measuring tool, but we can still draw a rigorous conclusion: Galaxy Z Fold7 is the thinnest folding mobile phone in the world.I switched the positions of two mobile phones during the test, and the results remained the same, which showed that the factors of… 15, 2025 A recent video from regular leaker Ice Universe popped up on X this week that shows the Magic V5 side-by-side with the Galaxy Z Fold 7. At first glance, the two devices look about the same thickness, though .1mm isn't that great a difference, but does it make the Z Fold 7 one of the best foldable phones? However, a card placed on top of the phones appears to show that Honor's device is slightly taller than Samsung's. They further emphasized this by putting a ping pong ball on the card with the tilt going toward the Z Fold 7. At this point, we're splitting micrometers difference here. They do have another comparison video that includes the Xiaomi MIX Fold 5, vivo X Fold 5 and the OPPO Find N5, which Honor's device seems more of a match. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Let's get some caveats out of the way here. One, Ice Universe is a regular, and seemingly only, leaker of Samsung products, specifically its phones. So there could be some bias there. Two, with no wider shot or level on the table, it's not clear if the surface is actually even enough for a fair test. In a comment to another X user they claimed, "My test is very rigorous. I switched the position of my mobile phone, and I have ruled out the uneven desktop. You can get the correct conclusion no matter what, even without a ruler." To be fair, they did post a follow up with a digital ruler that appears to show the Magic V5 measuring at 8.95mm and the Z Fold 7 at 8.79mm. Lastly, according to Honor's own metrics the 8.8mm measurement only applies to the Ivory White variant and that other colors may be thicker. Though Ice Universe does claim they tested the "white version." "Data comes from the HONOR Lab. 8.8mm refers to the thickness of the Ivory White model in the folded state," Honor's website says. "The actual data may vary depending on configurations, manufacturing processes and measurement methods." We're not going to cast aspersions on Honor about whether or not they're lying. At best it's stretching the truth, since they go out of the way to caveat their own hype, but it does seem like Samsung may hold the thinness crown for now. Though when you're measuring at micrometers, outside of marketing, is there really a difference?

The Magic Touch: HONOR has the world's slimmest foldable smartphone again — meet the HONOR Magic V5

Foldable smartphones have been around for years, but recently, there appears to be a race to have the slimmest foldable in the market. The Honor Magic V5, freshly unveiled on July 2nd, has been making a compelling case for itself as the device that might just have cracked the code. The Honor Magic V5 is a luxurious foldable smartphone with the look and feel of a high-quality device. Honor's latest foldable flagship immediately distinguishes itself with its almost impossibly slender design. At a mere 8.8mm when folded, and an astonishing 4.1mm unfolded (for the Ivory version), the Magic V5 isn't just thin — it's a statement. It reclaims the 'world's thinnest foldable' title, a testament to the brand's engineering prowess. This isn't just about bragging rights; it fundamentally changes the in-hand feel. This foldable truly feels like a regular candy bar-style smartphone when closed, shedding the bulky perception that has plagued many of its predecessors. When folded, the device is just 8.8mm. Unfolded, it is 4.1mm. But thinness without substance is just a gimmick. Fortunately, the Magic V5 has the substance to back it up as a true flagship device. Underneath its sleek exterior lies the powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform, and this is complemented by a generous 5,820mAh silicon-carbon battery — an impressive feat given the phone's dimensions; and with extended usage times, this is a significant leap forward for foldable battery life. In the box, there's a 66W charger that supports Honor SuperCharge — Honor's term for fast charging — and 50W wireless fast charging too. Durability, often a contentious point for foldables, is also a major focus for Honor. The 'Super Steel Hinge' is rated for over 500,000 folds, promising over a decade of daily use. Coupled with IP58 and IP59 ratings for dust and water resistance, and the 'Anti-scratch NanoCrystal Shield' on the outer display, the Magic V5 is positioned as a robust device designed for real-world scenarios. The internal screen even boasts a Non-Newtonian Fluid Material that hardens on impact and an AI-powered system to detect foreign objects, showcasing a comprehensive approach to protection. The beautiful display unfolded. The display experience is incredible too. Both the expansive 7.95-inch inner foldable OLED and the 6.43-inch outer OLED screens boast a buttery-smooth 120Hz refresh rate, 1.07 billion colours, and a decent brightness of 5000 nits. The crease is also noticeably less pronounced on the Magic V5 (compared to previous models). The triple-camera setup features an impressive 64MP Ultra Sensing Periscope Telephoto Camera with OIS, a 50MP Ultra Light-Sensitive Falcon Main Camera with OIS, and a 50MP Ultra-Wide Camera. There's also dual 20MP front-facing cameras on both screens for good-quality selfies and video calls, regardless of the phone's orientation. The rear triple camera system on the Honor Magic V5. Depending on the focal distance, the Magic V5 auto selects the most appropriate lens to shoot with; so you can go up close to an object and Macro mode activates. There's a Motion Sensing Capture function as well that shoots in burst mode, and in Portrait Mode, you can manually adjust the bokeh, or try AI Enhanced Portrait that sharpens subjects so you capture every detail. Not a fan of crisp pictures? There's a built-in Beauty filter where you can adjust how smooth you want your subject to be. South Beach Quarter, shot on Honor Magic V5. Roast Duck, shot on Honor Magic V5. Two Cyclists, shot on Honor Magic V5. Boots, shot on Honor Magic V5. Beyond the hardware, Honor has integrated AI deeply into the MagicOS 9.0.1 (based on Android 15) experience. The YOYO intelligent assistant offers a range of AI-powered features, from screen recognition and image editing to file search and memory management. The seamless cross-platform sharing with iOS, Android, HarmonyOS, Windows, and macOS is a further welcome addition, bridging ecosystems and enhancing productivity. The gorgeous case that comes in the box. The case has a useful built-in kickstand. The Honor Magic V5 feels like a mature, refined step forward for foldable technology. It's not just about pushing the boundaries of thinness; it's about delivering a cohesive, powerful, and durable device that genuinely elevates the foldable experience. If Honor can maintain this impressive balance of design, performance, and innovation in its global rollout, the Magic V5 will be the foldable that convinces a wider audience to embrace the future of smartphones. Singapore will be the first country outside of China to receive the Honor Magic V5. It will be available in four colours: Dawn Gold (featured throughout here), Ivory White, Silk Brown, and Black, all in a single configuration of 16GB RAM and 512GB of storage. The device is now available for pre-order at $2,199. Pre-order by 22 July to receive up to $837 in premium gifts — including a Honor Pad 10, Honor Magic Pen, and a 1-Year Extended Warranty — while stocks last. You'll receive the Honor Magic V5 by 23 July 2025.

Could the Galaxy Z Fold 7 really be the world's thinnest foldable after all?

Hadlee Simons / Android Authority TL;DR A side-by-side comparison shows that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 may actually be thinner than the Magic V5. HONOR claims the Magic V5 measures 8.8mm, while the Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures 8.9mm. The unique way the company measured the Magic V5 may explain the discrepancy. When Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 7, it impressed with a thickness of just 8.9mm. This measurement was enough to have it tie with the OPPO Find N5 for the world's thinnest book-style foldable. However, just before Samsung's launch, HONOR stole some of the Galaxy Z Fold 7's thunder by releasing the Magic V5. Thanks to a 0.1mm difference, the Magic V5 was able to snatch the title of world's thinnest for itself. But after some side-by-side comparisons, some are starting to question who the real champion of thinness is. On X (formerly Twitter), well-known leaker Ice Universe posted a video of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 next to the HONOR Magic V5. In the video, the tipster conducts a test by placing a flat card on top of both phones. Here we can see the card is angled slightly upward toward the Magic V5. When he places his finger down on the edge of the card on the Magic V5 side, we see the card lift up off the Galaxy Z Fold 7. No lift occurs when a finger is placed down on the opposite edge. I switched the positions of two mobile phones during the test, and the results remained the same, which showed that the factors of… There is no accurate measuring tool, but we can still draw a rigorous conclusion: Galaxy Z Fold7 is the thinnest folding mobile phone in the world.I switched the positions of two mobile phones during the test, and the results remained the same, which showed that the factors of… — PhoneArt (@UniverseIce) July 15, 2025 For further emphasis, the tipster places a ping-pong ball on the card. Regardless of where the ball is placed, it rolls toward the Galaxy Z Fold 7 every time. The same results occur when swapping the positions of the two phones. This suggests that Samsung's foldable may actually be thinner than HONOR's foldable. So what's going on here? How would this be possible when the Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures 8.9mm and HONOR says its phone measures 8.8mm? It appears the answer could be how HONOR got its measurement. Spotted by SamMobile, HONOR's global landing page for the Magic V5 admits that the number does not include the inner or outer protective screens. This measurement also doesn't include the raised part of the camera. While it's not uncommon to exclude the camera bump from this measurement, it is unusual to also exclude the protective layers of the display. Not including the protective layers may have given HONOR the leeway it needed to claim the 8.8mm measurement. In his conclusion, Ice Universe claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the true title holder of world's thinnest foldable. With the extra publicity that comes with being known as the slimmest foldable around, it's no surprise that brands are fighting to be king of the hill. However, trying to claim that title by omitting certain measurements isn't exactly a great look. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . Do foldables need Apple more than Apple needs foldables?

Concept image of a foldable iPhone . | Image credit – Apple Insider It is officially foldable season and maybe it's the summer heat, but this year's competition is all about who can go thinner. Still, while every brand is chasing millimeters, I think we are missing the bigger issue here. Because let's be honest – the real thing keeping foldables from going mainstream isn't the thickness. It's the no, I'm not here to talk about who made the skinniest phone. I want to talk about the price tags – and more specifically, about one foldable that isn't even out yet. Sounds weird, I know. But when the missing name is Apple, it's hard not to notice. Apple's foldable: maybe coming for real and cheaper than expected This is how a foldable iPhone could look like. | Image credit – Apple Insider According to a new report, Apple might finally be gearing up to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026 – a timeline that's already been floating around for a while. But the surprising bit is the price. This time, the rumor suggests it could land somewhere between $1,800 and $2,000. That might sound steep, but it's actually lower than previous estimates (some suggested $2,400 or more), and more importantly, it's in line with what Samsung, Google and others are already charging. And to me, that says a lot. Apple isn't looking to sit above the foldable market – it wants to compete directly with it. Foldables are everywhere, but still not for everyone Samsung just launched the new Z Fold 7 . | Video credit – PhoneArena We've already seen the Galaxy Z Fold 7 launch with a $100 price bump over last year's model. Just before that, Honor unveiled the Magic V5 in China, vivo dropped the X Fold 5 there, too and Oppo kicked off the year with the Find N5. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold from Google is expected next month. So, the space is packed – at least on the Android while we get better hardware, refined designs and slicker software with each new phone, most of these foldables still hover around the $1,800+ mark. That keeps them in luxury phone territory – a tough sell for anyone who isn't a die-hard early adopter. And to be fair, when we first heard Apple was working on a foldable iPhone , those rumors about a $2,400+ price tag seemed totally believable. After all, Apple has a long history of coming in late and charging more. But this time, the game looks different. Foldables aren't some untapped market. They are a small but growing niche and Apple might not want to position itself too far outside it. Especially after the Vision Pro lesson: $3,500 for a headset was a bit too much for most people and sales reportedly fell short of expectations. So if Apple really launches its foldable at the same $1,800 - $2,000 price range as its biggest rivals, that's a statement. It's not trying to be the Ferrari of foldables. It's showing up to play – in the same league as Samsung's Fold series and Google's Pixel Fold line. If Apple matches the price, it also sets the tone And let's be real – if Apple drops a foldable at $2,000, that basically cements the price floor for premium foldables. Brands like Honor, OnePlus and Oppo might still go a bit lower to stand out, but don't expect Samsung or Google to blink. If anything, Apple's entry gives them cover to keep their own prices high – now it's 'just what foldables cost.' But here is where I think things really get interesting: now, a lot of people don't even think about buying a foldable. $2,000 for a phone that folds? Especially if it's from a brand they don't fully trust yet? It's a hard sell. But once Apple steps in, that might change. People who would never consider a $2,000 Android phone might take a second look if it has an Apple logo on it. Carriers will push it harder. Retailers will make more space for foldables. Developers – finally – will have a strong reason to build better apps for foldable screens. That ripple effect is what Apple brings to the table. The real innovation Apple offers might not be hardware If the price rumor is true, Apple won't just be dipping a toe into foldables – it'll be diving in. And that could shift the entire category more than any thinner hinge, brighter screen or faster chip ever could. Because while Samsung and others have led the way on foldable tech, it might take Apple to actually normalize it. Secure your connection now at a bargain price!
