Limpopo driving school instructors, traffic examiners arrested for fraud
The Hawks in Limpopo have arrested four suspects at the Lephalale Police Station in a driving license fraud case. Two driving school instructors, a traffic examiner, and a former traffic officer have been nabbed in connection with the fraudulent issuing of driver's licences. The four were arrested on Wednesday morning in Limpopo by the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) on allegations of fraud, corruption, and money laundering. The suspects, aged between 37 and 61, were arrested in the Lephalale area and are expected to appear in the Lephalale Magistrate's Court today. Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, it is alleged that in 2021, examiners at the Lephalale Testing Station colluded with the driving school owners and defrauded the Department of Road and Transport by issuing learner's and driver's licenses without following proper procedures in exchange for bribes. 'The information was brought to the attention of the Polokwane-based Hawks' Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC),' Mmuroa said.

Youth gang members involved in violent machete brawl at Melbourne shopping centre on bail at the time of attack
Youth gang members involved in a violent machete brawl at a Melbourne shopping centre on Sunday were already on bail at the time of the attack. Police allege eight people from rival youth gangs began fighting while allegedly armed with machetes, at Northland Shopping Centre on Monday at about 2.30pm. The group of men allegedly planned the public fight ahead of time. Disturbing footage of the brawl shows a group of armed men thrusting their weapons around about a metre away from an infant child eating at a cafe. Northland Shopping Centre was promptly placed under lockdown, with hundreds of terrified shoppers fleeing from the centre and others seeking safety inside stores, as about 40 local police and specialist units responded to the unfolding situation. Two teenagers, believed to be the ringleaders, were arrested at the scene, with an additional two men charged on Monday. Court documents revealed the 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy were both on bail at the time. The two teens fronted the Children's Court on Monday, charged with various offences including committing affray while on bail. A 20-year-old Thornbury man who was charged over the affray was also on bail at the time of the incident. Both an 18-year-old and the 20-year-old were bailed after fronting the Magistrate's Court on Monday, while the two teenagers have been remanded in custody. The four men arrested over the incident are known gang members and are known to police. Victoria Police remains confident it has identified the other men involved in the brawl, and expects further arrests to take place imminently. The same day in South Melbourne, a woman was shot dead by police after officers responded to reports of a man brandishing a machete on Cecil Street. Meanwhile, south-west of Melbourne in Wyndham Vale, a 17-year-old boy was rushed to hospital with slash wounds to his arm and ribs after a separate incident on Sunday. Speaking at a media conference on Monday, the Victorian Premier confirmed a ban on machetes will be brought forward to start on midday on Wednesday. The interim ban, which Ms Allan confirmed applies to all "cutting-edge knifes with a blade of more than 20cm", will continue until September 1. "Under consumer powers, using these powers, Victoria will be banning machetes from being sold anywhere in the state," Ms Allan told reporters. "We can do this now. We can move to bring about this ban on the sale of machetes as we move quickly and safely with Victoria Police on bringing about that Australian-first machete ban." The possession of machetes will then be permanently outlawed from September 1.

Bail application for Shute shooter continues
The bail application hearing for Martin Wessels entered its third day at the Ladysmith Magistrate's Court today (May 14). State prosecutor Ms Khumalo made a surprise application for the magistrate to recuse herself from the case, claiming bias. Khumalo argued that Wessels was being treated like a privileged accused, as he was allowed to testify in both English and Afrikaans. She also raised concerns about the affidavit presented by defence attorney Justin Heunis, stating that he had translated it himself into English. Heunis countered that the affidavit had indeed been translated into English and handed to the prosecutor, and that the translation was for her own benefit. Heunis further argued that the magistrate had not yet made any decisions that would indicate bias, and therefore there were no grounds for recusal. After hearing arguments from both sides, the magistrate refused the application for recusal, allowing the case to proceed. With the recusal application dismissed, the court heard testimony from investigating officer Mr Mabaso. He provided background information on the deceased, Anton Lombard, describing him as a father of two young children, aged 11 and 13, whom he supported despite not living with their mother. Lombard was employed as a manager at Sentracor. Mabaso then outlined the state's reasons for opposing bail, citing four key concerns. He argued that Wessels was a flight risk, that his life would be at risk if he were released into the public, and that the public would also be at risk. Additionally, Mabaso claimed that Wessels might interfere with witnesses and that his history showed a disregard for the law. The ministry said preliminary reports indicated that an accused person in custody allegedly gained access to a court orderly's firearm. However, in a quick response, a second court orderly discharged his service firearm, killing the accused. The accused was declared dead at the scene. 'While the full details of the incident, including the identity of the deceased and the exact sequence of events, are still under investigation, the ministry is encouraged by the professionalism displayed by court officials in a high-pressure situation,' ministry spokesperson Terrence Manase said. 'Their actions undoubtedly prevented a potentially greater tragedy.' Manase said that despite the distressing incident, court operations at Melmoth were not disrupted, and the regional court continued to serve the public as scheduled. 'This reflects the resilience and commitment of the justice system and its officials to uphold the rule of law.' Manase said the police were conducting a thorough investigation, and a full report was expected soon. 'The ministry has also initiated its own internal review of court security measures,' Manase said. He said Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi had requested an urgent briefing and stressed the critical need to immediately enhance security measures within all court premises. 'The department is working closely with law enforcement to ensure enhanced safety measures are urgently implemented to safeguard all court users,' Manase said. DAILY NEWS
