Nick Daicos offers explanation after Kane Cornes floats ugly theory around Brownlow Medal
Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos has opened up on why he's chosen not to rest his ailing body more, with the Magpies sitting pretty atop the AFL ladder. With just six weeks until the finals, some have questioned why the Pies haven't been managing the workload of their gun midfielder. Daicos copped a knock against the Suns two weeks ago, but managed to finish the game. He then spent a large chunk of time at half-back against Fremantle, which the Pies lost by a point for their second-straight defeat. Daicos didn't look hampered against the Dockers, racking up a career-high 43 disposals. But Channel 7 commentator Kane Cornes questioned whether some of the Collingwood players were pushing through for 'selfish' reasons. 'Nick is sore, clearly sore and has been throughout the year,' Cornes said on Channel 7 program 'The Agenda Setters'. 'Is he playing for a Brownlow? 'My theory is that those players are not being managed to get themselves right to win a second or a third premiership in (Scott) Pendlebury's case. Are they playing for individual reasons more so than getting themselves right when they need to be right (in September)?' Cornes suggested Daicos might be trying to garner as many Brownlow votes as possible, rather than resting with the bigger picture of finals footy in mind. But speaking to Channel 7 on Tuesday night, the midfielder explained why he hasn't taken a break. Nick Daicos opens up on decision to keep playing Daicos said he feels much better when continuing to play, as it means he doesn't have to build himself back up after a rest. 'I'm feeling really good,' he told 7News Melbourne. 'My body likes continuity and just to continue being out there playing is the main thing for me. Body's feeling really good. It's a good time to be feeling good coming into finals so just need to stay on top of everything.' Nick Daicos has declared he doesn't need a rest as the Pies close in on September. The Brownlow Medal favourite spoke exclusively to @XanderMcGuire7 on Collingwood's path back to premiership glory. @7AFL #7NEWS — 7NEWS Melbourne (@7NewsMelbourne) July 22, 2025 Daicos pointed out that after two losses on the bounce, the Pies are no guarantee to keep the top spot. Brisbane are now just two points in arrears, while Adelaide are only four points back. 'Definitely doesn't feel like we have a comfortable buffer,' Daicos said. 'I know the boys are keen to continue playing ... ultimately we need to be playing good footy going into the finals. We've got to continue to win and put ourselves in the best position going into finals." RELATED: Collingwood tipped to 'up their price' to get star player from Carlton Coach rejects Harley Reid claim as Hinkley wows with Ginnivan response Speaking after their loss to the Dockers, Collingwood coach Craig McRae said he's worried his team might have lost some of their 'spark' in close games. Their one-point loss to Freo came nine days after they fell six points short against the Suns - an uncharacteristic trait under McRae. "This is not something you've ever got handled because every game is opportunity," McRae said in his post-game press conference. "Managing those moments will forever be something we need to do. If the scoreboard is an indication, we haven't managed it well enough (in the last two weeks). "We've lost three close games this year. Have we lost our spark? You'd hope not. But reality is, we'll keep getting better at it. I'd rather learn these lessons now."

Newcastle United pushes to sign Yoane Wissa this summer
Brentford turned down an initial €25 million offer, but the Magpies are set to return with a new bid. Yoane Wissa Yoane Wissa left Brentford's pre-season training camp in Portugal on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, to return to London. The Congolese striker is attracting interest from several European clubs, with Newcastle United making the first official approach to Brentford. Yoane Wissa is among Newcastle United's main targets for this summer transfer window. The Magpies' interest in the Congolese forward intensified after their failed pursuit of Hugo Ekitike, who instead joined Liverpool. Newcastle have already submitted an initial bid of €25 million, but the Bees rejected it, deeming the offer insufficient. However, that's not the only reason behind Brentford's refusal to sell. Brentford reluctant to lose Yoane Wissa Brentford are understandably hesitant to part ways with another key attacking asset after the departure of prolific Cameroonian striker Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United, not to mention captain Christian Norgaard's sale to Arsenal. With 20 goals in all competitions during the 2024/25 season, Yoane Wissa remains a cornerstone of Brentford's sporting project for the 2025/26 campaign. Yoane Wissa ready to put pressure on the Bees for Newcastle United move Although Wissa is vital to Brentford's plans, the Congolese international himself is pushing for a move away from the Gtech Community Stadium. With his contract running until 2026, Wissa left the Bees' training camp to persuade club officials to let him go. Multiple sources report that he is eager to sign for Newcastle this summer. Meanwhile, the Magpies are preparing a fresh €35 million bid.

Premier League star leaves training camp as Newcastle make their move for striker
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is eager to sign a new forward to complement Alexander Isak next season and the club are going all in for Brentford's Yoane Wissa after missing out on Hugo Ekitike Newcastle have stepped up their bid to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa after reports that the Magpies have had a £25million bid rejected for the player. The 28-year-old has left the Bees' training camp in Portugal having told the club he needs to sort out his future. Tottenham and Nottingham Forest are both keen on the DR Congo international but Newcastle are determined to get their man having missed out on a string of transfer targets this summer. Wissa is due to hold talks with Brentford director of football Phil Giles but following Thomas Frank's departure to Spurs, it appears that he is now looking for a move away from the Gtech Community Stadium. The Magpies will fly out to Singapore for the first leg of their Asian tour having secured just one play - Anthony Elanga so far - with Eddie Howe openly admitting it's been a frustrating window for him. Despite the Toon's determination to hang on to prize asset Alexander Isak amid strong interest from Liverpool, the club are intent on strengthening their squad ahead of the big kick-off. And while Wissa's age is not ideal for a club looking to lower the age profile, they are ready to meet Brentford's valuation of around £35m. A report from Sky Sports has claimed Newcastle believe a deal will get done after their initial offer was turned down - with the player only have one year left on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium. It's understood he is keen to play in the Champions League and has told the Bees he is "open" to a move to St James' Park. Brentford would be extremely reluctant to lose two key forwards, having already allowed Bryan Mbeumo to join Manchester United for around £70m this week. The Bees dug their heels in over Mbeumo, who they signed for just £5m back in 2019, as they demanded a substantial fee following his superb displays last season that saw him score 20 goals in the Premier League. Having already snapped up Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m, Brentford demanded a higher fee that would justify Mbeumo's superior season over the Brazilian. Losing both Mbeumo and Wissa would be a massive blow to new boss Keith Andrews, who has a huge task ahead of him to keep the team away from relegation. Brentford will face QPR and Borussia Monchengladbach in pre-season before their Premier League opener away at Nottingham Forest on August 17.

Isak odds: Where will the Newcastle striker be next season?
Leaving goals in Newcastle when your star striker is needed to gain sharpness by playing in a pre-season friendly at Celtic was a baffling decision by Magpies manager Eddie Howe. It is understandable he didn't want Alexander Isak to be the centre of post-match speculation if he had played in the defeat to the Scottish champions at Parkhead but the move has raised red flags in a city which bleeds black and white as it has renewed speculation he could be sold. Liverpool have been linked, Saudi Arabia has been mentioned and Arsenal are lurking in the shadows as they are still trying to sign the striker needed to transform them from perennial Premier League runners-up into a side capable of winning the title for the first time in more than two decades. And who would really be shocked if Chelsea conjured up the finances to secure the Sweden international's services over a lengthy period ranging from between six to eight years? Bayern Munich could also be interested along with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain as the Tyneside terror is one of the best finishers on the planet, having scored 54 Premier League goals in three years at the St James' Park club. Despite agreeing to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike for £69million, the Reds are in need of more firepower if they are to retain the title following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz's desire to move on and Arne Slot's willingness to allow Darwin Nunez to join another club. The trouble for all potential purchasers is Newcastle need back up for Isak rather than scurrying around trying to find a replacement. They have failed in attempts to sign Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who have both joined Manchester United and missed out on Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, who have swelled Chelsea's ranks. Missing those targets mean Newcastle are highly unlikely to allow the jewel in their crown to depart, which would leave them desperately short of goals ahead of a new season which sees them back in the Champions League. Newcastle have insisted Isak is not for sale and even if they were forced to let him go because his head has been turned they would regard £150m as the bare minimum for an elite scorer who supplied 23 goals and six assists in the top-flight last term, while also bagging the decisive strike in the 2-1 Carabao Cup final success over Liverpool at Wembley. If Isak were to leave then the 4/1 with BetMGM and Unibet he heads to Anfield is a decent price but big-hitters should smash into the 1/3 with bet365 that he's still a Newcastle player when the transfer window closes. The Magpies simply cannot allow a rival club to steal him from their grasp. Johnny Rotten appears at the Rebellion Festival in Blackpool next month but the Sex Pistols singer will struggle to match the same filth and fury seen in the explosive ruckus between Gerwyn Price and Daryl Gurney in their heated World Matchplay encounter in the Winter Gardens on Monday. The darts duo are not the best of friends – security had to separate them after a Premier League match in Sheffield six years ago – and were involved in a heated exchange after Price's 10-7 first-round triumph when 'Super Chin' appeared to mock the Iceman's energetic victory celebrations, having earlier mouthed an apparent obscenity as he headed for a break in play. More Trending Price faces Chris Dobey in the second round and is 10/11 with William Hill, bet365, Betway Betfred and BoyleSports to win by over 2.5 legs while new kid on the block Josh Rock can take the scalp of three-time World Matchplay champion Michael van Gerwen at 8/13 with Hills. The eagerly awaited rematch between Jan Brueghel and Calandagan takes place at Ascot on Saturday in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the former horse, trained by Aidan O'Brien, can repeat his half-length victory when winning the Coronation Cup at Epsom at the start of June at 2/1 with William Hill.
