The Maharashtra Premier League (MPL) and the Women's Maharashtra Premier League (WMPL) organised by the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) will kick off from June 4 at the MCA International Stadium in Gahunje, Pune. The tournament has free entry for spectators on all days. The opening ceremony of the MPL and WMPL will take place on the evening of June 4 and will feature a drone and light show and celebrity performances. This will be followed by the opening game of the MPL to be played between the defending champions Ratnagiri Jets and Eagle Nashik Titans. Two teams from Pune 4S Puneri Bappa in MPL and Pune Warriors in WMPL will also be participating in the tournament. In total, the 2025 season of MPL will feature six teams — two-time defending champions Ratnagiri Jets, 4S Puneri Bappa, PBG Kolhapur Tuskers, Eagle Nashik Titans, Satara Warriors and Raigad Royals. The four teams participating in WMPL are Pune Warriors, Ratnagiri Jets, Solapur Smashers, and Raigad Royals. In this year's player auction, a total of 409 male cricketers and 249 female cricketers went under the hammer. MPL will be telecast on Star Sports 2 and will be streamed live on Jio Hotstar, while the WMPL will be streamed on Jio Hotstar. At the press conference on Saturday, MCA president Rohit Pawar also announced that the association will provide a grant of ₹75 lakh to each district under its purview to develop cricket infrastructure. 'Maharashtra Premier League is a platform that provides opportunities to emerging players from the state. It allows gifted cricketers from the remote regions of the state to make their mark at the national level. The ultimate aim is that the MPL should produce international players,' Pawar added. The Maharashtra Cricket Association also announced plans to launch its cricket academy, modelled after the National Cricket Academy. This academy, to be named after former MCA president Ajay Shirke, will be established in Pune, followed by the launch of four regional academies across Maharashtra. T20 Mumbai and MPL set to be postponed
The suspension of the Indian Premier League for a week has resulted in the T20 Mumbai League (T20M) and the Maharashtra Premier League (MPL) being postponed by a week. T20 Mumbai – after hosting two successful editions in 2018 and 2019 – was set to return to the city calendar from May 27, with a gala inauguration ceremony planned a day earlier, till June 8 at the Wankhede Stadium. The Maharashtra Cricket Association's stadium on the outskirts of Pune was scheduled to host the MPL from May 31 to June 15. However, with the IPL – scheduled to resume on May 17 – final to be played on June 3, neither the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) nor the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MhCA) can start their respective leagues till the IPL is over. 'We are waiting for a formal clearance from the BCCI about the revised window. As soon as we get a go-ahead, we will announce the revised fixtures,' Kamlesh Pisal, the MhCA secretary, told The Hindu on Tuesday. Abhay Hadap, the MCA secretary, also echoed a similar sentiment, adding that the 'IPL has just been rejigged, so it's understandable that it will take a few days more' for T20M to be reorganised. According to the BCCI rules, no intra-State league can clash with the IPL. But with the delay of the IPL, the T20 Mumbai and MPL are likely to be affected by the monsoon. The rainy season begins in Mumbai around June 10, while Pune starts getting showers around June 15. No delay for WMPL The MhCA is likely to get a go-ahead for the WMPL – the first edition that will feature Smriti Mandhana as captain of one of the four teams – to be staged from May 26, since there is no conflict between WMPL and the IPL from a broadcast perspective.

Maharashtra Cricket Association to launch cricket academy modelled on NCA
The Maharashtra Cricket Association will start its own cricket academy modelled on the Centre of Excellence (erstwhile NCA) based in Bengaluru and will also come up with 'regional centres', says president Rohit Pawar. The MCA will start with a financial assistance of ₹75 lakhs each for six district cricket associations and similar support will be extended to the other bodies in the future. There are a total of 21 districts under the jurisdiction of the MCA and the six districts to have got the assistance are Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara and Parbhani. The academy will be named 'Ajay Shirke-Maharashtra Cricket Academy', named after the former MCA president who also served as treasurer and secretary in the BCCI. The announcements was made by MCA president Pawar during the governing body's MahaVandan MCA Awards 2025 ceremony. Former India captain Shubhangi Kulkarni was honoured with the MCA Lifetime Achievement Award whereas former India player Kedar Jadhav, who retired in June last year, was given the Legendary Cricketer Award for his 'remarkable contribution' to Maharashtra and Indian cricket. 'The Maharashtra Cricket Association remains committed to the development of grassroots cricket. The announcement of our very own cricket academy is a major step in this direction,' Mr. Pawar said in a release.

India beat England to seal T20 cricket series as sub Rana vexes Buttler
Harshit Rana has claimed three wickets in his debatable appearance as a concussion substitute to help India to a series-clinching, 15-run victory against England in the fourth T20 International. India overcame Saqib Mahmood's three-wicket burst on Friday to post a competitive 181-9 after half-centuries by Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube. England were 166 all out with two deliveries left in their innings as India grabbed an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. All-rounder Dube was hit on the helmet by a Jamie Overton bouncer, and seamer Rana replaced him despite it not being a like-for-like replacement as concussion substitute rules mandate. 'When Dube came back two overs into the chase, I was told [about being the concussion substitute],' Rana told broadcasters. 'I have been waiting for this moment to prove myself,' he said of his 'dream debut'. England captain Jos Buttler was less impressed, however. 'It's not a like-for-like replacement. We don't agree with that,' Buttler told reporters after the game. 'Dube has either put on 25 miles per hour [40 kilometres per hour] with the ball or Harshit Rana has really improved his batting. 'I still think we should have gone on to win the match, but we disagree with the decision.' England fast bowler Saqib also impressed on his debut as he began with a three-wicket maiden over to rattle India at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium. India opener Sanju Samson fluffed his pull shot, number three Tilak Varma perished at deep third leg and captain Suryakumar Yadav was caught at short mid-on, prolonging his lean patch in the series. Abhishek Sharma (29) and Rinku Singh (30) propped up India before the left-right combination of Dube and Pandya counterattacked during their 87-run partnership. Pandya and Dube smashed identical 53s, but India managed only three runs from the eventful last over from Overton, losing three wickets in the process. Phil Salt (23) and Ben Duckett (39) milked 32 runs from the first three overs of India's seam bowling, prompting Suryakumar to employ spin from both ends. Thanks to their unbridled aggression, England were 62-1 after the first six powerplay overs compared with India's 47-3. India struck back through spin as Ravi Bishnoi (3-28) dismissed Duckett and Buttler in his successive overs while Axar Patel removed Salt. Harry Brook (51) hit Rana for back-to-back sixes en route to a 25-ball fifty, but Varun Chakravarthy turned the match on its head, claiming two wickets in his final over. Brook fell attempting a scoop shot against the spinner, and two balls later, Brydon Carse was snared at deep square leg as India tightened their grip on the contest. Mumbai hosts the fifth and final T20 International on Sunday, which will be followed by three one-dayers between the sides.
