MSRTC to hold drivers, conductors accountable for parcel delays, damages
Amid rising complaints over the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation's (MSRTC) parcel service, the state transport body has announced that bus drivers and conductors will now be held directly responsible for any delays, damages, or loss of parcels during transit. The move is aimed at addressing growing concerns over the efficiency and reliability of MSRTC's parcel operations, which run alongside its passenger transport services. (REPRESENTATIVE PIC) This decision follows a surge in grievances from citizens reporting that parcels sent via MSRTC often arrive late, damaged, or not at all. According to the MSRTC Pune division, the directive was issued by the general manager of planning and marketing to all divisional controllers across the state, instructing the strict implementation of this new accountability framework. The move is aimed at addressing growing concerns over the efficiency and reliability of MSRTC's parcel operations, which run alongside its passenger transport services. 'We have received instructions from the general manager of planning and marketing. All depot managers and the parcel service department have been briefed accordingly, and strict compliance is being ensured,' said Arun Siya, MSRTC Pune divisional controller. In January 2024, the state government appointed a private agency to oversee MSRTC's parcel operations until November 2027. However, despite the partnership, recent months have seen continued complaints of delivery delays, missing packages, damaged items, and parcels being accepted without proper documentation or official receipts. During a recent high-level review meeting, chaired by MSRTC's vice chairman and managing director, it was decided that drivers and conductors would henceforth be held accountable for any discrepancies involving parcels. Officials noted that in the event of a vehicle breakdown, while passengers are usually accommodated on alternate buses, parcels are often left behind. Going forward, staff must ensure that parcels are also transferred appropriately. Additionally, MSRTC squads will now conduct inspections to detect unauthorised parcel movement. Drivers and conductors have been instructed to accept only those parcels accompanied by official receipts issued by the authorised agency, preferably with a valid GST number. Handwritten or unofficial receipts are strictly prohibited. 'I had sent an important set of documents from Pune to Solapur through the MSRTC parcel service. They arrived five days late, and the envelope was torn. When I tried to follow up, no one had a clear answer. It's frustrating — we rely on government services for their reliability,' said Suresh Jagtap, a regular MSRTC commuter.

MSRTC employee union event in Nashik likely to impact bus services
Nashik: The one-day annual convention of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation employees, who are members of the Seva Shakti Sangharsh State Transport Workers' Union, is being held in Nashik on Sunday. The event has led to a significant number of employees from various depots filing leave applications, and this could disrupt bus services, particularly in the Kalwan, Lasalgaon, and Surgana depots. Led by MLA Gopichand Padalkar, the organisation is addressing issues related to unpaid dues to MSRTC employees and other demands, including improved facilities for drivers and conductors who are required to halt at night at various locations before commencing their duties the following day. Balasaheb Avhad, the president of the Nashik unit of the organisation, said, "Govt has promised us dues, but the arrears remain unpaid for the period since 2016. After the 2022 strike, the employees were also promised a Rs 6,500 pay rise, but the arrears were never paid. The organisation will take a stand on it." Referring to a circular stating that drivers and conductors who sign in on muster for the day should be treated as on duty instead of marking 'leave' even if no bus is available, Avhad claimed that employees are kept waiting for six to seven hours before being assigned unscheduled duties and working for eight hours, which he called is an injustice. Avhad further said many employees from each depot in Nashik are working diligently to ensure the convention is memorable for the members. However, the event is likely to impact bus operations in some depots, especially those in Nashik. A senior official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, "Of the 125 drivers and an equal number of conductors in the Kalwan depot that runs 64 buses daily across 2,400 km, more than 200 employees have filed for leave. It is impossible to relieve all of them, and if they go, the depot operation will be hampered." He added that a similar situation exists in the Lasalgaon, Surgana, and Peth depots, where the number of leave applications is more than 60%. "We are arranging employees from adjacent depots, but even they are facing manpower issues, and the solutions are limited," the official said.

Mountaineering organisation urges CM to start Shivteerth Yatra connecting Unesco inscribed Maratha forts
1 2 Pune: Sahyadri Giribhraman Sanstha, a mountaineering organisation based in Junnar, has proposed the launch of a special 'Shivteerth Yatra', modelled on the lines of Jyotirlinga pilgrimage, connecting the 12 forts recently inscribed as Unesco World Heritage Sites. The organisation has written to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging him to flag off the yatra from the historic Shivneri Fort, the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj . Of these 12 forts, 11 are in Maharashtra and one in Tamil Nadu. Described as "Maratha Military Landscapes", these are Salher Fort, Shivneri Fort, Lohgad, Khanderi Fort, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala Fort, Vijay Durg, Sindhudurg in Maharashtra and Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu. Through our efforts, we helped establish the Shivai sacred grove and Junnar archaeological museum. An information centre is also coming up in the historic Ambarkhana building on the fort," Joshi said. The organisation has proposed that the Shivteerth Yatra be operated through Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), with specially designed buses connecting all 12 Unesco-recognised forts. It has also requested that Junnar ST bus depot be redeveloped in heritage style. "Junnar is steeped in history. Now that Shivneri Fort has Unesco status, it is only appropriate that the bus stand reflects the region's historic and cultural character," said Rahul Joshi, president of Sahyadri Giribhraman Sanstha. "Shivneri is not just a fort, it is the cradle of Maratha pride," he added. Each fort holds significant historical importance. Shivneri Fort, located in Junnar tehsil, is considered a "sacred fort" among all the forts of Maratha Empire because it is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort was built in the 6th century CE as a strategic military outpost. Built in a triangular shape, it is surrounded by cliffs and overlooks Junnar town. "The most striking aspect of the fort is its seven-tier defence system, designed to block enemy advances. It was a challenging task for attackers to engage in battle due to the uphill terrain and seven enormous gates," said Joshi. "If the state government connects these forts with a dedicated bus service, it would provide a great opportunity for people to visit these historical sites, as many of these are located in rural areas. Therefore, we have urged the government to consider our request positively," said Ganesh Kore, the secretary of the organisation. Thousands of people visit the forts every year. Many come to enjoy the atmosphere and greenery, but only a few are keen to understand their historical significance, said the members of the club. "It is difficult for people to find the time to visit all these forts by making individual arrangements. However, if there is a dedicated public transport, a large number of people, including women, would visit these forts," said Keshav Tengle, a history enthusiast and trekker.
