Two Noida cops suspended for delay, cover-up in Thar SUV assault case

A day after a video showing a 25-year-old man being struck by an SUV in Noida's Sector 53 went viral, the station house officer (SHO) of Sector 24 police station and the in-charge of the Gijod police outpost were suspended for failing to report the incident to senior officers and for not making timely efforts to arrest the suspects, senior police officers said on Wednesday. The black Mahindra Thar used in the assault was later traced and seized, police added. In a statement, Noida police said SHO Shyam Babu Shukla and sub-inspector Jagmohan Singh were suspended 'with immediate effect' for suppressing information and showing negligence. 'Their conduct reflects indiscipline and a disregard for official responsibilities. Taking serious note, police commissioner Laxmi Singh has ordered a departmental inquiry,' the statement said. Deputy commissioner of police (Noida) Yamuna Prasad confirmed the SUV had been seized. 'Multiple teams are working to trace the suspects seen in the video,' he added, without disclosing how the vehicle was located. A senior officer said the Thar was abandoned in the Gijod area after the assault. 'We tracked it using CCTV footage. It's possible the suspects have left the city,' the officer said, requesting anonymity. He added that Saurabh Yadav, the victim, also has a case registered against him at Beta 2 police station. 'We are checking the criminal background of all individuals involved.' The attack followed a dispute over a message allegedly sent by Akash Awana to the female friend of a man named Ayush. A fight broke out between two groups—Saurabh, Sumit Yadav (his brother), and Ayush on one side, and Akash, Aman Awana, Gaurav Chouhan, and Kunal Chouhan on the other—around 4pm on Monday. During the clash, the Thar, allegedly driven by Akash, struck Saurabh from behind, flinging him into a roadside drain. The incident was captured in a 28-second video filmed by his brother and later verified by police. Despite the registration of a case under sections including attempt to murder, assault, and criminal intimidation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, no arrests were made as of Wednesday night. Police say 15 to 20 people were involved in the attack.

Noida SHO among cops suspended as viral video shows man being sent flying after hit by Thar

The Gautam Buddh Nagar police commissioner on Wednesday suspended two police officials and also set up a departmental inquiry over the viral video of a man who was hit over by a Mahindra Thar and sent flying into a drain following a scuffle on Monday. In a written statement, the Noida police said the station house officer of Noida sector 24, Shyambabu Shukla, and the outpost in-charge of Gijhore, Jagmohan Singh, had been suspended with immediate effect. 'On June 2, an incident of quarrel and brawl between two parties under the jurisdiction of Sector-24 police station went viral on social media. Despite knowing about the incident, the Sector-24 police station in-charge inspector Shyambabu Shukla hid the incident from the higher authorities and did not make any meaningful efforts to arrest the accused,' read the official statement. On Monday, a social media video went viral in which an injured man was hit by a black Mahindra Thar from behind, which sent him flying into a roadside drain following a scuffle between two groups over an alleged online spat. The Noida police registered an FIR on Tuesday under sections related to rash driving, criminal intimidation and causing harm, and formed five teams to arrest the accused. The police further said in the statement, 'This act is a reflection of arbitrariness, negligence and indiscipline towards one's duties and responsibilities. Taking cognizance of the incident, the Police Commissioner of Gautam Buddh Nagar has suspended the SHO and outpost (Chowki) in-charge with immediate effect. The concerned officials have been directed for departmental inquiry.' The Noida traffic police has also issued a challan of Rs 68,500, officials said. The man in the video, who later identified himself as Saurabh, said he had gone to meet a friend in Noida along with his younger brother when the incident happened. 'My friend had called me saying that a group of men had been misbehaving with him. When we reached there, I realised that these were the same men who had earlier filed a case against us, which was quashed over lack of evidence,' he said. A senior police official said the investigation is underway.

Mahindra Thar would make a great Jimny rival - is it finally on the radar for South Africa?

The Mahindra Thar Roxx could be heading to South Africa later this year. Image: Supplied The second-generation Mahindra Thar is a rugged yet affordable compact SUV, which has been something of a hit in its home market of India. However markets such as South Africa have missed out on it so far. Since its introduction in 2020, the latest Thar has found more than 250,000 homes in India, and its popularity has surged further since the introduction of the five-door Roxx version in late 2024. When the latter was launched last year, Mahindra's head of automotive operations, Rajesh Jejurikar, told Business Today that the company had no immediate plans to export the model to markets outside of India. He said the factory would instead focus on satisfying demand in its home market. 'At this point of time, we are expecting that we are going to be pretty full with meeting domestic requirements for some point of time, so no plans on exports,' Jejurikar told the Indian publication. Mahindra recently increased production of the Thar in India, with capacity having increased from 6,500 units per month, in November 2024, to around 9,000 at present, Autocar reported. This comes as rumours circulate about the Thar's possible South African introduction later this year. Local Mahindra representatives announced at the recent Nampo show that the company planned to launch another SUV in South Africa this year, but they did not give any further details about this product. Yet given the options currently available in India, the Thar Roxx would appear to be the only viable option for local introduction. Furthermore, local dealers that we spoke to say they're expecting the new model to arrive around September this year. Interestingly, Mahindra was blocked from introducing the three-door Thar from the Australian market in 2021 after Jeep instituted legal action due to the vehicle's perceived resemblance to the Wrangler. But it is not believed that there are any legal impediments to the vehicle being introduced in South Africa. What is the Mahindra Thar Roxx? Although many have labelled it as a potential Suzuki Jimny killer, the Mahindra Thar Roxx is a somewhat bigger vehicle, with an overall length of 4,428mm stretching well beyond the Jimny's 3,820mm footprint. However, the Thar Roxx is still relatively compact, given that a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited stretches out at 4,882mm, and its pricing certainly overlaps with the aforementioned Suzuki. In India, the Thar Roxx costs between 12.99 and 23.39 Lahk (R271,000 to R489,000), while the Jimny 5-door sells for 12.76 to 14.96 Lahk (R266,000 to R313,000). Keep in mind that South African prices would be somewhat higher due to duties and other associated import costs. The cabin is available with some high-end features. Image: Mahindra

Road rage caught on camera: Speeding Thar rams into man, sends him flying into drain

A horrific incident of road rage was caught on camera in Noida's Sector 53 area. A Mahindra Thar SUV, allegedly driven in anger, was rammed into a young man, sending him flying into a roadside drain. The incident has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage among residents and others. The cruel act reportedly stemmed from an online argument, according to police sources cited by NDTV. The dispute is said to have started over comments exchanged on Instagram and later escalated into a physical confrontation on the streets of Noida. "There was a dispute between the two parties under the jurisdiction of Sector-24 police station over comments on a social media platform. Both sides are familiar with each other," said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Noida, Sumit Kumar Shukla, according to the NDTV report. After the argument turned violent, the driver allegedly accelerated the Thar deliberately, mowing down the victim with such force that he was thrown off the road and into a nearby drain, the report said, citing eyewitnesses. The victim was left bleeding and motionless. After committing the crime, the SUV fled the scene. The police have registered a case under relevant sections for rash driving, causing hurt, and criminal intimidation. A special investigation team has also been formed to identify and arrest the accused driver, who is currently on the run. "A police team has been formed to arrest the accused, and a case has been registered under the relevant sections at Sector-24 police station," said ADCP Shukla. A video journalist of a national news channel was assaulted in Mumbai's Prabhadevi area on Saturday, following which four persons were arrested by police. Anil Shinde was on his way to the office in Lower Parel in the afternoon when the incident took place. "While he was walking, a motorcycle attempting to cut a lane rammed into him, resulting in an argument. The rider took a stick and hit Shinde on the head. The accused then returned with three associates and beat up Shinde," an official said. The official said that after Shinde dialled the police control room, a team from the NM Joshi Marg police station arrived at the scene and took him to a hospital. "A case was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and four persons were arrested. Further probe into the incident is underway," he added.
