Chelsea fans send X-rated message to Mike Maignan after failed transfer talks
Chelsea held talks with AC Milan over a possible deal for Mike Maignan earlier this summer and he was serenaded by Blues fans during a friendly match between the two clubs Mischievous Chelsea fans teased Mike Maignan with a cheeky chant during Sunday's 4-1 friendly win over the French goalkeeper's AC Milan side at Stamford Bridge. Maignan, 29, emerged as a surprise transfer target for the Blues earlier this summer and talks over a potential deal were even held before Enzo Maresca and his team jetted off to the United States to compete in the Club World Cup, which they went on to win. Talks over a deal collapsed, though, and it has since been reported that Chelsea are content with their keeper options. And Chelsea fans threw their backing behind Robert Sanchez when Maignan and AC Milan played them on Sunday, chanting: "You're just a s*** Robert Sanchez." Sanchez ended the 2024-25 campaign as Chelsea's first-choice keeper and is expected to start the new season as Maresca's No 1. The Blues also have Filip Jorgensen and Mike Penders on their books, with the latter highly-rated and currently on loan at Strasbourg for the season. It was Sanchez who started in between the sticks on an afternoon to forget for Maignan and the Italian giants, with Chelsea going on to win their final warm-up match ahead of the new Premier League season 4-1. Goals from Joao Pedro and a brace from the Blues other new striker, Liam Delap, added to an eighth minute own goal from Andrei Coubis. Yousouff Fofana scored a consolation for Milan in the second half. Chelsea will be hoping to improve on last season's fourth-place finish after performing so well at the Club World Cup. And Maresca reckons his side are in rude health ahead of their season opener against Crystal Palace next Sunday. "I think the performance was very, very, very good until the red card,' the Italian said. "We started the way we wanted to start, intense and with a high tempo on and off the ball. "The red card changed a little bit the game but it's also normal [that the energy dropped a little] as Milan started pre-season on 4 July, 40 days ago, and this was their sixth friendly game. "For us, it's our second one. But overall, I'm very happy and now we start the Premier League." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. AC Milan boss Max Allegri speaks out on future of Chelsea target Mike Maignan
Mike Maignan is staying at AC Milan, despite interest from Chelsea this summer, confirmed manager Massimiliano Allegri. The Frenchman became a target for the Blues before the Club World Cup, with the goalkeeper reportedly interested in a move to Stamford Bridge. However, the two clubs could not agree on a fee for the 30-year-old, with the Premier League outfit unwilling to pay more than £15m for his services. AC Milan wanted at least £20m for their captain, despite him only having one year left on his contract at the San Siro. With a relatively small gap between the two valuations, it seemed possible that Chelsea could return with an acceptable bid for the experienced 'keeper. However, Allegri says Maignan has decided to stay with the club he joined in 2021, with a move to west London off the table. 'Maignan remains the captain and is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe,' Allegri said on Monday. 'I am very happy he decided to stay.' Chelsea's goalkeeping situation was an issue last season, with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen battling for the gloves and neither of them looking especially convincing when they had them. The club clearly acknowledged the problem by pursuing Maignan, but the issue remains unresolved now he is staying at the San Siro. The 57-year-old Milan boss also ruled out an exit for Portugal international Rafael Leao, who has been linked with a move this summer. Arsenal, Liverpool and Bayern Munich have all been touted as possible destinations for the winger, but Allegri insists Leao is not leaving either. 'Rafa can do excellent things next season. I'm sure I can bring out that extra something he's been missing,' said Allegri. 'He's reaching the age where a player performs at his peak.' More Trending There is set to be at least one high profile arrival at AC Milan this summer, with Luka Modric arriving from Real Madrid. The veteran midfielder turns 40 in September, but will play in Serie A for the first time next season, joining his new teammates when he has finished his duties at the Club World Cup. 'We are waiting for Luka Modric,' said Allegri. 'He will arrive in August, he is currently with his team at the Club World Cup. 'Luka Modric is an important and exceptional player. He does not need an introduction.' Chelsea are Out of the Race to Sign AC Milan Star This Summer
Chelsea's Goalkeeping Dilemma: Stability Over Star Power? Chelsea's decision not to pursue AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan this summer, as reported by Sky Sports News' chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol, reveals a clear shift in recruitment strategy under the current regime. It was confirmed that 'they were offered the AC Milan goalkeeper but walked away from a potential deal before the first window of the summer.' That move, or rather the lack of one, speaks volumes about the direction the club is heading under sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, with Enzo Maresca now preparing for his second campaign in charge. Advertisement It's important to note that 'Chelsea did not make a bid for Maignan,' indicating a deliberate cooling of interest rather than an inability to strike a deal. There is currently 'only a small chance they will sign another goalkeeper this summer,' signalling that Chelsea are content with their current options, at least for now. Photo IMAGO Depth Without Certainty Between the Sticks Chelsea find themselves with four goalkeepers: Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic and Mike Penders. Solhekol adds, 'One will go on loan to Strasbourg and one will be sold.' Such depth could suggest healthy competition but also reflects a potential lack of decisiveness in nailing down a clear number one. Advertisement Djordje Petrovic, who made several promising appearances last season, and Robert Sanchez, who arrived from Brighton with a strong pedigree, are likely the leading candidates for the top spot. However, the inclusion of young Filip Jorgensen and Mike Penders hints at future planning, not necessarily present assurance. Financial Prudence or Missed Opportunity? It's difficult to separate Chelsea's lack of movement in the goalkeeper market from their ongoing balancing act with Financial Fair Play. Having spent heavily across the last three transfer windows, their restraint here might not just be strategic — it might be necessary. Passing on Maignan, a top-level talent who would have likely commanded a hefty fee, could be as much about the books as it is about belief in their squad. That said, one has to question whether skipping such a deal could come back to haunt the Blues. As European ambitions intensify and domestic stability remains elusive, a reliable shot-stopper could be the difference between a solid season and another frustrating rebuild. What It Says About Maresca's Confidence This development might signal that Enzo Maresca is satisfied with the tools at his disposal. Rather than bringing in a headline name to replace or compete with the current options, Chelsea appear to be leaning on cohesion and internal development. The Italian manager's preference for building from the back might see Petrovic or Sanchez given time to grow into the role, rather than be replaced by a marquee signing. Advertisement It's a gamble, but perhaps a calculated one. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Chelsea supporter's perspective, this update is mildly unsettling. While it's reassuring to see the club refraining from reckless spending, the lack of urgency in solidifying the goalkeeping position raises concerns. Let's be honest — neither Robert Sanchez nor Djordje Petrovic inspired total confidence last season. Petrovic showed flashes, sure, but he's still raw. Sanchez, while experienced in the Premier League, has had consistency issues. If Enzo Maresca really wants to instil calmness and control in his back line, then surely a world-class keeper like Mike Maignan would have helped. The fact we walked away so early, without even bidding, just feels like a missed opportunity. Advertisement The idea of relying on quantity over quality isn't exactly comforting either. Having four goalkeepers and saying, 'one will go to Strasbourg and one will be sold' doesn't address the main issue: we don't have a clear number one capable of leading us back into the top four. Maresca's system demands trust and control from the back. That begins with the goalkeeper. Supporters are right to ask — is either Sanchez or Petrovic that man? Or are we simply waiting until it becomes a problem again in the middle of the season? In truth, many fans were hoping for a statement of intent, especially in goal. Instead, this feels more like compromise. Let's hope it doesn't cost us.
