Manchester United warned to refuse transfer that would be 'a step too far'

Manchester United will listen to offers for every single member of Ruben Amorim's squad throughout the summer transfer window, including academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo Manchester United legend Gary Neville has urged the club not to sell Kobbie Mainoo, warning them that it would be 'a step too far'. Mainoo, 20, broke into United's first-team under former boss Erik ten Hag and enjoyed a meteoric rise during the 2023-24 season. The midfielder scored as Ten Hag's side beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup and he became a starter for England later that summer, helping the Three Lions reach the final of Euro 2024. But his progress has stalled this term. ‌ Fitness problems and a change of formation under new manager Ruben Amorim have limited Mainoo's opportunities. The United academy graduate was benched for the Europa League final and Amorim only gave him a brief cameo in stoppage time. ‌ His lack of minutes plus the Red Devils' decision to put every player up for sale this summer has left Mainoo's future shrouded in uncertainty. Neville, like many supporters, would be gutted to see the Stockport-born starlet leave. "Mainoo, no. That's a step too far," Neville declared on the It's Called Soccer podcast. "If we can't give Kobbie Mainoo a job in that two in midfield… I look at Mainoo and the way he plays football and I think a top club would want him. "Why can't we make him a top player? If he's one of ours and he's shown talent. I don't know what's gone on there in the last few months. He's obviously had some injuries which has caused him a problem so he needs to stay fit, but I'd like to think he could be one of that two in midfield that Ruben Amorim plays. "It's probably not Casemiro as his partner and it's probably not [Manuel] Ugarte as his partner, it's probably someone else in there who is better than those two, if I'm being honest. But we should be building around Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield and not because he's come through the ranks. Would you sell Kobbie Mainoo if you were Manchester United? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ "I'm alright for getting rid of players coming through the ranks, but not getting rid of players who come through the ranks and have shown what they can do. Marcus Rashford has been at the club a long time, [Alejandro] Garnacho has had two or three years and there's a bit of a situation going on as well. But Mainoo is a no for me. He doesn't leave." Amorim has already assured Neville that he doesn't want to lose Mainoo, who was tipped to join Premier League rivals Chelsea in January. It came amid reports that the 20-year-old's representatives were demanding wages in the region of £150,000 per week. "I really love my players," Amorim said. "I want to keep them, especially the talented ones. It is a hard moment and I am really happy with Kobbie. He is improving." Man Utd have truly hit rock bottom with Europa League final defeat – but it might be best thing that's happened to them

THIS sounds weird, but I actually think Manchester United's Europa League final defeat is the best thing that could have happened to them. You need to hit the bottom, and they truly have bottomed out now. Now, they are going to have to spend properly, be diligent and work from the ground up. It could be a blessing in disguise. But this remains a massive summer for Advertisement READ MORE ON FOOTBALL They know who their manager is, they know how much they have got to spend and they know what the problems are. Now, go and solve them and make it happen. And if they don't, then you will all look like clowns. It's pressure, but to me it is a great pressure. The question is whether they can handle it. Rasmus Hojlund's plight up front continued in one of the worst European showpieces for many years - as both sides showed why they will finish in the Premier League lower reaches. Spurs clinched it from virtually their first opportunity - on 42 minutes. Brennan Johnson bundled in Pape Sarr's inswinging cross, with United left-back Luke Shaw also getting a touch on the way. The Red Devils dictated possession more and more after the break, with Leny Yoro stretching to test Guglielmo Vicario from a free-kick. But United's chances only arrived regularly in the final quarter of a patchy contest. The Red Devils belatedly piled on the pressure in the seven minutes of stoppage time, but Spurs just held on. Roy Keane blasts three ‘immature' Man Utd stars for ‘strolling around' v Chelsea

Roy Keane delivered a scathing assessment of Rasmus Hojlund, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho following the defeat to Chelsea, insisting Manchester United should not be fighting to keep the trio at the club. United suffered their 18th defeat of the Premier League season at Stamford Bridge on Friday night in what was a thoroughly underwhelming warm-up for next week's Europa League final against Tottenham. Ruben Amorim's side were once again lifeless in the final third with centre-half Harry Maguire looking the most dangerous in front of goal with his first-half effort ruled out for offside. Hojlund had another underwhelming game littered with poor hold-up play and loose touches. With their regular striker Nicolas Jackson suspended, Chelsea turned to academy winger Tyrique George to lead the line – with Keane claiming Hojlund was the player who looked fresh out of junior football. 'Hojlund looked like a young kid for Chelsea, he looked like he had come straight out of the academy. 'His runs weren't right, his hold up play, his timing. If you're a striker playing for Man United and you are having one shot on target… we make excuses for him saying he needs more confidence but when you are a striker up there, you have to make things happen sometimes. 'What the big clubs have, what United always had, is strikers who can produce something by themselves because they have quality, desire, determination, a bit of experience, football intelligence. 'You don't see it with Hojlund. he needs a little bit of support but you need to do better.' Hojlund, Mainoo and Garnacho shared a memorable celebration at Old Trafford last season but three of United's brightest stars have struggled throughout the 2024-25 campaign. Mainoo and Garnacho have both been linked with moves away should the right offers come in this summer. And former United skipper Keane insisted his old side should not stand in their way, slamming Mainoo's performance off the bench in west London. More Trending Asked if Hojlund, Mainoo and Garnacho were two players United should fight to keep,' Keane said: 'No. No I wouldn't. I wouldn't be hanging my hat on them three to get United anywhere. 'Mainoo came on tonight and I watched him closely, he's strolling around, some of his passing was sloppy. 'Garnacho is immature, he plays in little moments but he doesn't do enough. 'You want players to turn up week in and week out and he doesn't do that. He a big talent, makes some good runs and on a good day you like what you see. But he's got too many bad days.' Man Utd stance on Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho after Chelsea approach

Manchester United remain open to selling Alejandro Garnacho but are now expecting Kobbie Mainoo to remain at Old Trafford following interest from Chelsea. Garnacho came close to leaving United in the January transfer with both Chelsea and Napoli holding talks over a deal for the Argentina international. Napoli were unable to agree a transfer fee for Garnacho, even after United lowered their asking price to €65 million (£54.8m). Meanwhile, Garnacho's salary demands also scuppered a possible deal with Napoli, who were in the market to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia following his €70m (£58.9m) switch to Paris Saint-Germain. According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, Garnacho's departure is regarded as 'highly possible' this summer if United and the winger agree on a suitable deal. However, it is claimed that there is now a 'growing sense' at United that Mainoo will not leave Old Trafford in the summer transfer window. Chelsea had registered their interest in Mainoo during the January transfer window in the wake of United's concerns over meeting the Premier League's PSR rules. More Trending Mainoo will still have three years remaining on his contract with United this summer but reports last month claimed that the 20-year-old would reject the offer of a new deal. United, meanwhile, are said to value Mainoo at £70m and his transfer fee would fund a significant rebuild of Ruben Amorim's squad this summer. It's understood that Amorim has identified Matheus Cunha as his top target for the No.10 role in his 3-4-2 system and United are now looking to move quickly to activate the £62.5m release clause in his contract with Wolves. United are also looking to complete a swift deal to sign Liam Delap, who is set to have a £30m relegation release clause in his contract with Ipswich Town. Kobbie Mainoo's Future At Manchester United Isn't As A Number Six

In just seven minutes at the end of extra time, Manchester United turned its Europa League quarter-final tie against Lyon on its head. Bruno Fernandes got the comeback started with a penalty while Harry Maguire's header put United through. Kobbie Mainoo's goal, however, was the moment that truly electrified Old Trafford. Mainoo only came off the bench in extra time and was thrown on in an advanced position to give Manchester United another body in the attack as its chased a comeback. However, his goal was the sort of moment he has produced before as someone who wants to get into the opposition box as often as possible. Initially, Mainoo was thought of as a number six. Gareth Southgate used the youngster at the base of the midfield for England as The Three Lions made a run to the final of Euro 2024. Erik ten Hag clearly also saw Mainoo as someone who could anchor his team in the centre. Mainoo was seen as the next N'Golo Kante or Sergio Busquets. This season, though, Mainoo has demonstrated more of his skill set which suggests his future for Manchester United lies higher up the pitch. Against Wolves on Sunday, Ruben Amorim used Manuel Ugarte and Christian Eriksen deeper in central midfield with Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho ahead of them. Amorim is still figuring out exactly what he has within his squad after taking over from ten Hag earlier in the season. The Portuguese coach has deployed a formation that has been an awkward fit for Manchester United's squad, but there are signs that the Old Trafford outfit is finally making steps forward. Joshua Zirkzee is growing in influence in behind the central striker. Bruno Fernandes continues to be Manchester United's most reliable difference-maker in the final third. Patrick Dorgu has given the Red Devils some much-needed physicality down the left side since his arrival from Lecce in the January transfer window. Mainoo clearly has the talent to be an elite-level performer for club and country, but there has been some confusion over his exact role. Amorim has experimented with the 20-year-old as an attacking midfielder where he can get closer to goal, like he did for the crucial strike in the comeback win over Lyon. That moment could prove to be a turning point in Manchester United's season, and Mainoo's career at the club.
