2 held for murder of youth who objected to their drunk ruckus

After a youth was allegedly beaten to death for opposing a group of drunkards who were creating a public nuisance on Sunday night, there has been tension in the Bakultala area of Jaynagar in South 24 Parganas district. Police have registered an FIR against 13 people and arrested two of them. According to police sources, Sayem Khan intervened when a group of intoxicated men in Buichbati, a locality in Bakultala, allegedly used obscene language and behaved indecently in public. Residents said the men assaulted Khan, who later died of his injuries while being taken to a Kolkata hospital. Tension peaked on Monday morning when residents blocked the road in protest, demanding the arrest of the accused. 'The alleged attackers, identified as Moktar Naskar and Qutubuddin Naskar from Rupnagar village, were among the men who returned to Buichbati on Sunday and attacked the Khan, resulting in fatal injuries. Both have been arrested. The investigation is on,' said a senior police officer. Khan's family claimed the two arrested accused have a history of criminal activities, including theft and robbery, and have frequently caused disturbances while intoxicated. Cab driver, aide held for ‘threatening' US tourist at Kolkata airport

THE BIDHANNAGAR police on Thursday arrested a taxi driver and his accomplice for allegedly threatening a US tourist after he landed at the Kolkata airport. The police action came after the tourist, Dustin, uploaded a video of a purported conversation with the two persons on his YouTube channel that soon surfaced on other social media platforms. The police identified the arrested as Manoj Roy (52) and Alamgir Molla (34), a taxi driver. A suo motu case has been registered at the NSCBI Airport Police Station, police said. According to Dustin, his 'unsettling experience' began shortly after landing in Kolkata when he booked a local taxi to his hotel on Park Street. Despite clear instructions, the driver intentionally drove him nearly 15 km in the wrong direction towards a different hotel in Rajarhat, claimed Dustin. When Dustin confronted the driver about the incorrect destination and refused to pay the inflated fare, the situation escalated. Another man entered the vehicle on the pretext of mediation and soon threatened Dustin with physical harm. Eventually, Dustin claimed, he was compelled to switch to another taxi. However, before he could leave, the second man demanded an additional Rs 100 for 'parking and petrol,' forcing Dustin to pay a total of Rs 800 for a trip that would have cost Rs 500-600 via an app-based cab. The video uploaded by Dustin surfaced on other social media platforms as well and action was taken, police said. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. Chargesheet filed in Tangra triple murder case, minor son ‘provided key testimony'

The Kolkata Police have filed a chargesheet against two brothers, Prasun Dey and Pranay Dey, in connection with the February triple murder of three female members of their family. According to sources, police are relying heavily on the testimony of Pranay's minor son, who was in the car when the brothers allegedly crashed into a pillar near Abhishikta More on Kolkata's EM Bypass on February 19. The chargesheet, submitted Thursday, invokes sections 103(1) (murder) and 109(1) (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and comes months after a car crash culminated in the discovery of three bodies in a multi-storeyed apartment building. According to police sources, the chargesheet shows that investigators have relied heavily on the testimony of Pranay's minor son – while still undergoing treatment at a local hospital, the boy allegedly gave a detailed statement about an 'attempted strangulation and a wrist injury', which the police are using as a key piece of evidence, officials said. After the car crash on February 19, Pranay allegedly made a startling confession: that the brothers had intentionally crashed the car and that three others – his wife Romi Dey, Prasun's wife Sudeshna and his minor daughter – had died by suicide at their home in Tangra. While an FIR initially booked some unidentified individuals for murder. However, investigation allegedly revealed that the brothers had killed the others before attempting suicide, with the police linking the entire episode to some financial losses the family suffered in their leather business.
