Punjab CM Mann lashes out at Akali leader Majithia

Mann slammed Majithia for allegedly politicizing the Amritsar blast incident in which a man died after trying to retrieve the explosive material. The chief minister's reaction came after Majithia consistently attacked the state government over the law and order issue. Chandigarh, May 28 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Wednesday lashed out at SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia, accusing him of trying to 'mislead people with baseless propaganda' against the AAP government. 'Majithia questions law and order. But who is he to speak? During your regime, an SHO was shot while trying to protect the honour of his daughter, and slogans of 'Majithia Zindabad' were raised. Have you forgotten this,' he asked. The CM reminded people of the Nabha jailbreak incident during the erstwhile Akali regime and questioned the accountability of leaders like Majithia. In an official statement, Mann alleged that Akali leaders 'enabled drug mafias and gangsters, flooding Punjab with drugs and crime'. 'Whenever drug smugglers or mafias are caught, their connections inevitably lead back to Akali leaders,' Mann alleged. 'Majithia represents a legacy where the poor were jailed for standing up, while the powerful looted Punjab without consequence,' he claimed. 'The Akali Dal built an empire of corruption, allowing unchecked gangsters and smugglers to thrive. Now, they try to posture as saviours of Punjab. The people will no longer buy into their lies,' he said. 'Unlike Majithia, who thinks only of his personal benefits, my government is committed to policies that prioritize Punjab's common people. We will never sign off on any policy that harms Punjab or its people,' Mann said. The CM also hit out at Majithia's 'hypocrisy' in calling for law and order reforms. 'Under Badals and Majithia's leadership, Akali Dal became a symbol of lawlessness and greed. They are responsible for throwing Punjab into the quagmire of drugs and crime,' Mann further alleged. 'Every election, I have declared my assets. My wealth has consistently reduced because I serve Punjab, not myself. Can Majithia say the same,' Mann asked. The CM issued a warning to leaders who indulge in corrupt practices. 'Those who exploit the poor and rob Punjab will face justice. No amount of wealth can shield you from the consequences of your actions. Remember, the prayers of the poor and honest always reach God, and their curses are unstoppable,' he stated. SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia says govt not probing Amritpal Singh in murder case

Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) functionary Bikram Singh Majithia on Monday accused AAP govt in Punjab of "not acting" against Waris Punjab De chief and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh "in the Gurpreet Hari Nau murder case or even the UAPA case involving planning of political assassinations ". Addressing a press conference, Majithia said AAP govt had, in fact, helped Amritpal by extending his NSA detention. "Similarly, no attempt is being made to probe a Rs 22-crore dacoity committed by Jaipal Bhullar, in which Amritpal claimed he had a hand," added Majithia. He stated that Amritpal was also not being questioned about his link with gangsters. Earlier in the day, responding to a question on a purported viral audio linking Amritpal with slain gangster Jaipal Bhullar, Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said, "I am very keen to comment on it, but it is a quasi-judicial matter where every accused has rights. "I cannot jeopardise the rights of an accused," he said. Majithia also released a purported video of Amritpal's brother claiming he was "partaking drugs" and asserted that "Amritpal had only put up an anti-drug façade, but was actually involved in drug smuggling besides being closely associated with gangsters". Majithia also showed another video of Amritpal's father, Tarsem Singh, claiming drugs had been planted on his son Harpreet. "This video makes it clear that Harpreet is a habitual drug offender and that his father Tarsem was lying to protect him despite being a baptised Sikh," said Majithia. The SAD leader said, "Whatever I said has been substantiated by Sukhpreet Hair Nau, whose brother Gurpreet Hari Nau was murdered at Amritpal's behest. Police investigation also revealed that two drug addicts – Anmolpreet and Navjot Neeta, who murdered Gurpreet, were linked with gangsters Arsh Dalla and Lawrence Bishnoi. This means Amritpal is also in league with gangsters." Majithia also released a video which purportedly showed Punjab State Mandi Board engineer-in-chief Jatinder Singh Bhangoo leading Amritpal out of the gurdwara in Moga where he surrendered to the police. "While this proves Bhangoo's hand in sheltering Amritpal when he went underground after the Ajnala incident, the Punjab Police is yet to take any action in the case. Instead of taking any action, chief minister Bhagwant Mann shared the stage with Bhangu at an official event recently," Majithia added. Amritpal group's spokesperson slams claim Imaan Singh Khara, the chief spokesperson and legal advisor of Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) headed by Amritpal Singh, hit back at Majithia and said, "Majithia is levelling false allegations against Bhai Amritpal Singh since his public support has eroded. By falsely accusing Bhai Amritpal Singh, he is trying to regain his lost security cover and maintain a façade of influence among the people." Khara, who held a press conference in Chandigarh on Saturday, dismissed the purported call recording of Amritpal released earlier by Majithia as "AI-generated", a claim mocked by Majithia on Monday.

SC rejects Punjab's appeal, SAD leader Majithia to remain on bail in drugs case

'The respondent (Majithia) was participating in the process of further investigation. In view of the said facts and also taking note that the liberty (bail) was granted on August 10, 2022, more than two-and-a-half years ago, at present we are not inclined to interfere with the order impugned. Accordingly, the SLP (special leave petition) stands dismissed,' the bench said in its order. A bench comprising justices J K Maheswari and Aravind Kumar said it will not entertain the Punjab government's plea against the bail granted by the high court on August 10, 2022. New Delhi, Apr 25 (PTI) In a setback to the Punjab government, the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed its appeal challenging the bail granted to Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a drugs case by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. 'Neither side shall come forward on the issue of investigation or court proceedings to make any statement in the media,' it added. The bench asked Majithia, the brother-in-law of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, to file an affidavit within a week, undertaking that he will not make any statement to the media about the case. 'The respondent (Majithia) shall not influence any of the prosecution witnesses or the trial proceedings. In case of default, the prosecution is at liberty to take recourse,' the bench said. The top court granted the anti-drug Special Task Force (STF) the liberty to seek cancellation of Majithia's bail if he attempts to influence witnesses or the trial in the drugs case. The bench also asked the STF to seek its prior approval before making any public statement on the case. Majithia walked out of the Patiala jail on bail on August 10, 2022, with the Punjab and Haryana High Court saying there were 'reasonable grounds' to believe that he was not guilty. The SAD leader was booked on the basis of a 2018 report of the STF on a drug racket in the state. The STF report was based on confessional statements given to the Enforcement Directorate by some accused, including Jagjit Singh Chahal, Jagdish Singh Bhola and Maninder Singh Aulakh. While granting bail, the high court had said the observation was only for the purpose of adjudicating his bail application and the trial court should proceed independently of the observations made by it. The high court said, 'We are satisfied that reasonable grounds exist to believe that the petitioner is not guilty of the offences alleged against him in the FIR and he is not likely to commit such offences while on bail.' Noting that it will take time for the trial against Majithia to begin and culminate, the high court said, 'So, no fruitful purpose is going to be served even if the petitioner is kept in judicial custody for a further indefinite period.' Majithia was released after spending more than five months in the Patiala jail. PTI SJK ARI This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.
