Man, 67, dies after being hit by car on the M1 'while trying to grab ladders that had fallen off his vehicle'

A man has died after being hit by a car on the M1 while he was 'trying to recover ladders from the carriageway'. The 67-year-old had been left 'seriously injured' after a collision on the motorway in Leeds on Wednesday, May 21. West Yorkshire Police say the incident happened on the northbound carriageway near the exit for Junction 47 shortly at around 1.30pm and involved a Toyota Rav4 car and the man. It is believed the man, who was a passenger in a Ford Ranger parked on the hard shoulder, had been attempting to recover ladders from the busy carriageway when he was struck. Responders rushed the 67-year-old to hospital where he sadly died today. Images from the motorway captured last week showed the ladders strewn on the opposite side of the carriageway from where the Ford Ranger had pulled over. An ambulance and multiple police cars could also be seen in footage as the force secured the area which quickly bottlenecked with traffic. The force say it is now being investigated by its Major Collision Enquiry Team who are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed it, or anyone who saw the ladders falling on to the carriageway. A man who was interviewed voluntarily by officers on the same day as the collision has been released under investigation. Anyone with footage which may assist this investigation is asked to contact police either by calling 101 or on their live chat quoting reference 13250285264. Officers from the Roads Policing Unit also said anyone who witnessed the collision or the vehicles in the time leading up to it to contact them. They say they want to hear from anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage which could assist the investigation.
