Red Sox place struggling Houck on IL, Cooper Criswell takes his spot
The 2025 season has not been kind to Boston Red Sox starter Tanner Houck. After Houck's latest blowup against the Detroit Tigers, an outing which saw him allow 11 earned runs on nine hits and two home runs over two and 1/3 innings, he has received perhaps his most discouraging news so far. Advertisement Here is the latest on Houck, according to Chris Cotillo of Mass Live: Houck has mostly been a durable pitcher in his six-year MLB career, and this move is sure to generate 'phantom IL' discussions among the Boston fan base. However, assuming this is a valid injury and not a mental refresher for Houck, it comes at a convenient time. Houck has been abysmal with an 8.04 ERA, a 6.13 FIP, an American League-leading 57 hits allowed, and a Major League-leading 39 runs allowed. Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck (89) pitches in the first inning against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Osentoski-Imagn Images It has been a disappointing development for the 28-year-old, who was expected to take another leap after an impressive 2024 effort that earned him his first All-Star Game appearance. Advertisement Hopefully for the Red Sox, Houck can get healthy and rediscover his stuff and his confidence in the coming weeks. His replacement, Criswell, has not been particularly impressive in his three MLB games this year, either. He has a 10.38 ERA, a 6.80 FIP, and has not yet recorded a strikeout. He has been excellent for Triple-A Worcester, though, with a 1.99 ERA and 31 strikeouts to seven walks over 22 and 2/3 innings. Boston still has a talented staff, namely because of ace Garrett Crochet, but Houck's IL visit marks another chapter in what has already been a tumultuous ride for this staff's availability. Tampa Bay Rays Slate Doesn't Get Easier with NL Cy Young Contender Up Next
The Tampa Bay Rays enter play Thursday with a 16-20 record through their first 36 games. While there are two teams below them in the American League East standings, it is still not what the Rays were hoping for at this point of the season. And it comes in the midst of an already-lost series to the Philadelphia Phillies, which does not get any easier as the visitors have a National League Cy Young contender slated to start in Jesus Luzardo. Advertisement Luzardo has found new life with his new club after the Phillies acquired the lefty from the Miami Marlins over the offseason. In seven starts so far, Luzardo has pitched to a 1.94 ERA across 41.2 innings with 47 strikeouts, a 215 ERA+ and a Major League-leading 2.0 bWAR. The one saving grace for the Rays on Thursday is the fact that Luzardo has struggled against them in the past. The lefty has made four career starts against Tampa Bay, one in each of the last four years, and has pitched to a 6.20 ERA across 20.1 innings with 19 strikeouts. His most recent start against the Rays came while still a member of the Marlins in 2024. Luzardo did not make it out of the fifth in that outing, pitching only 4.1 innings and allowing nine runs, all earned, while striking out only two. Needless to say, he took the loss in that one and holds a 0-3 record against Tampa. It will be a tough matchup for the Rays, who will try to avoid the sweep. Tampa Bay has been swept twice so far this season, once on the road by the Texas Rangers from April 4-6, and at home by the Kansas City Royals from April 29-May 1. The first pitch for Thursday's contest is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST. It will be broadcast on FanDuel Sports Network Sun, NBC Sports Philadelphia and MLB Network (out-of-market only). The radio broadcast is on WDAE 620 AM/95.3 FM, or WQBN/1300 AM.

Baltimore Orioles Lend Hand to Kansas City Royals in Tying Record
It is not every day that a Major League record is set, or even tied, but the latter is exactly what happened when the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals faced off Sunday. While the Royals did the lion's share of the work, another instance of a team feasting on the Orioles' pitching staff, Baltimore made sure to put in a little effort as well. When all was said and done, the two teams combined to hit 10 solo home runs on the day, tying a Major League record. Ten solo bombs in one game has only been achieved twice before. The first came in 1995 in a 14-12 Chicago White Sox win over the Detroit Tigers, and the more recent occurrence came in 2022 in a 10-6 Arizona Diamondbacks victory over the Chicago Cubs. Sunday's contest culminated in an 11-6 Royals victory over the Orioles. Advertisement While the two teams combined to tie a Major League record, they hit 11 home runs in total, with Kansas City setting a franchise record with the seven that the the Royals on their own. The ball was really flying out of the park when two teams combine to hit 11 home runs in one game, but when one team accounts for seven of those, there are a lot more issues under the hood. For Baltimore, three players hit their four home runs. Jackson Holliday got the party started on Star Wars Day with his third of the year in the second inning, before hitting his fourth of the year two innings later. Cedric Mullins and Ryan O'Hearn each added their seventh jacks of the year, with both coming in the fifth inning. Oriole Park at Camden Yards has become much more hitter-friendly with the wall in left field being brought in over the offseason. Gone is Walltimore, and hello are more home runs from right-handed sluggers. With the wind blowing from right to left added, it was time to prepare for takeoff from the first pitch. Advertisement The Orioles may not be done setting records for the number of home runs they will allow this year, either. Through 33 games, they have allowed a Major League-leading 51 home runs, or 1.55 per game for those keeping track. If you are heading out to Camden Yards anytime soon and are sitting in the outfield, bring a glove.

Ken Rosenthal Explains Why Kyle Tucker Has ‘Transformed' Cubs Batting Order
The Chicago Cubs knew they were getting a superstar when they traded for Kyle Tucker. But, perhaps even the front office did not realize how great of an impact he would have on this lineup. Through the Cubs' first 20 games, Tucker is batting .313 with a 1.027 OPS and a 195 OPS+, all while leading the team in home runs (five), RBIs (18), and a Major League-leading 16 walks, three of which were intentional. He is also perfect on all four of his stolen base attempts. Advertisement Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic recently discussed on Foul Territory how Tucker has made a marked improvement on this lineup: Chicago currently leads the league in runs scored (122), hits (182), doubles (38), and walks (89). This is not solely because of Tucker's scorching hot start at the plate, but having that sort of weapon in the heart of the lineup instills fear in opposing pitchers. Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker (30) hits a two-run single against the Los Angeles Mio-Imagn Images Tucker is best out of the two-hole, with Ian Happ leading off and Seiya Suzuki batting third, although the latter is injured right now. Happ is not having his best season so far, but he has proven to be a difficult out and puts stress on every staff he faces. Advertisement Another positive has been Michael Busch. The 27-year-old, now in his second full Big League season, is raking from the cleanup spot. He has a .302 batting average, a .983 OPS, and a 180 OPS+ while driving in 12 runs and four home runs. Busch may just be on a hot streak, or this could be the breakout campaign that the Cubs sorely need. As great as Tucker has been (and should continue to put up these numbers), Chicago needs legitimate hitters around him. If this becomes a one-man show, pitchers will have no inclination to pitch to Tucker. Tucker's value and impact make his one-year contract all the more pivotal for the Cubs.
