Malaysia's 'flying roti canai' draws long queues at Expo 2025 in Osaka

The sight of Muiz tossing roti canai dough in the air is part of the crowd-pulling appeal at the Malaysia Pavilion. – BERNAMApic OSAKA: "Flying roti canai" has turned out to be a crowd-puller at Expo 2025 Osaka, drawing visitors to the Malaysia Pavilion with its skilful preparation and irresistible buttery aroma. The sight of roti canai being expertly tossed high into the air by Muhammad Muiz Ruzaini and Mohamad Zul Imran Zulkifle, combined with the tempting smell, has whetted the appetites of visitors. Some are willing to queue for up to two hours. Muiz said he did not expect to be selected as part of the Malaysian delegation to Expo 2025 Osaka, where he would showcase the rich flavours of Malaysian cuisine on the world stage. What makes the experience even more rewarding is the overwhelming response from visitors, the Kedahan said when met at the expo recently. "Many visitors praised the delicious roti canai and gave positive feedback, both in terms of taste and our presentation. "After they ate, many would come up and say 'oishī' (delicious). Some even repeated it seven times," he said, adding that most of the visitors were from Japan, South Korea and China. The freshly made roti canai, served with chicken curry and dhal, is priced at 1,680 yen (almost RM50) per serving. Daily sales average between 1,000 and 1,600 pieces, underscoring its growing popularity among visitors from the above three countries and elsewhere. The pan-fried flatbread – a popular choice at any time of the day in Malaysia – is skilfully stretched, flipped and spun in the air to create a layered texture. Crispy and flaky on the outside but soft on the inside, the roti canai was ranked among the top 100 street foods in the world in 2023 by global food database TasteAtlas. Zul Imran, a roti canai maker from Penang, hoped that the popularity of roti canai at the expo would help cement its place on the global culinary map and attract more tourists to visit Malaysia. "I hope the Malaysia Pavilion roti canai becomes the number one dish at Expo 2025," he said. Japanese visitor Yoko Yoshinaga described the dish as "sweet, with a unique texture, and addictive". "This is my second time having roti canai. I first saw it on X (formerly Twitter), and the unforgettable taste brought me back. I lined up again just to relive the experience," she said. Yoshinaga, who visited Malaysia 30 years ago, praised the nation's development, calling it a peaceful and modern country. Another visitor, Hanako Sekimukai, who tried roti canai for the first time, said she was pleasantly surprised by its flavour. "I've been to Malaysia before, but I never had the chance to try roti canai. The chicken curry served with it wasn't too spicy, which made it even more enjoyable," she said, adding that the cultural performances at the pavilion brought back fond memories of her time in Malaysia. Located on a 2,654.52sq m site across three floors, the Malaysia Pavilion reflects the nation's diverse culture and dynamic economy. Under the theme "Weaving a Future in Harmony", the pavilion highlights Malaysia's commitment to a sustainable, inclusive and forward-looking future. Expo 2025 is a six-month fair that began on April 13 and will go on until Oct 13. It is the second world expo in Osaka after Expo 1970. – Bernama

Fadillah was here for the launch of the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, where he had the chance to explore the pavilions of other countries including Japan, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. Malaysia stands to gain from outing at Osaka expo

Showcasing the best of Malaysia: Fadillah visiting the exhibition area after officiating the opening of the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, which is open until Oct 13 in Yumeshima Island in Osaka Bay. — Bernama OSAKA: Malaysia has successfully secured more than RM8bil in potential investments and signed 20 memoranda of understanding (MOUs) by participating at Expo 2025 Osaka, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, and chairman of Malaysia's National Organising Committee for Expo 2025, said this achievement, involving 101 companies, represents 61.54% of the overall RM13bil target that was previously set. 'I am confident that with our coming initiatives over the next four months, we will not only surpass our target but also unlock new opportunities for Malaysians. 'The success of our participation will pave the way for job creation while further strengthening bilateral ties with Japan and other global partners,' he told a press conference after launching the opening ceremony of the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka here yesterday. In addition to the digital economy, Fadillah highlighted the green economy, Japanese technologies and global participation in Expo 2025 as key opportunities for Malaysia to explore. He noted that these opportunities position Sarawak not only as a hub for energy, particularly green energy, leveraging its hydropower resources, but also as a central player in Malaysia's Hydrogen Economy Roadmap and Energy Transition Roadmap. Regarding the signing of the 20 MOUs, Fadillah said the Malaysian Pavilion has facilitated several high-impact MOUs and strategic partnerships that reflect the country's forward-looking approach to regional collaboration, sustainable development and technological advancement. 'This agreement has covered a wide range of sectors, including renewable energy, digital, property services, biotechnology, caregiving innovation and infrastructure development. 'The key focus areas have included efforts to support decarbonisation, advance green hydrogen solutions, strengthen dementia care capabilities and promote smart facility systems and sustainable materials,' he said, reported Bernama. Collectively, the partnerships underscored the Malaysia Pavilion's role as a hub for generating tangible economic outcomes, also encouraging cross-border knowledge sharing and reinforcing Malaysia's position as a regional leader in clean technology, inclusive innovation and future-ready industries, said Fadillah. Earlier, in his opening speech, Fadillah said the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 has surpassed the remarkable milestone of one million guests this week. Fadillah said Malaysia and Japan's longstanding relations and strong ties extended beyond economic relations, encompassing a shared commitment to regional stability and cultural understanding. The Malaysia Pavilion also unveiled its official mascot, 'Lina', a Malaysian girl who embarked on a journey of discovery and balance, guided by her older self through a future-inspired realm. Her evolving batik 'selempang', which transformed into songket, symbolised transformation, identity and hope. 'Lina' is a reflection of the next generation of Malaysians who are thoughtful, empowered and rooted in heritage while embracing global sustainability ideals.

Sarawak steps up role in ASEAN Power Grid, expands RE vision

OSAKA: Sarawak is stepping up a plan to integrate Borneo into the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), underlining its commitment to regional energy cooperation, said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. He said Sarawak has been supplying electricity to West Kalimantan, Indonesia, since 2016 and is currently in the process of supplying power to Brunei. 'We will play our part to contribute to the APG. Sarawak is also actively enhancing its grid infrastructure to strengthen power distribution across the state and beyond,' he said after the opening ceremony of the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan, today. Besides renewable energy (RE), Awang Tengah said Sarawak is transforming its industrial landscape through strategic diversification into hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, oil and gas (O&G), petrochemical products, and aerospace. These developments complement the sustainable O&G sector and expansion into high-value petrochemical downstream activities, leveraging advanced technologies and sustainable practices, he said. 'Sarawak is shaping a dynamic economic hub in Southeast Asia, balancing economic growth and environmental responsibility while achieving long-term prosperity,' said Awang Tengah. He said Sarawak is going to be the hub for RE, anchored in hydropower as it has the potential to generate at least 30,000 megawatts (MW) or 30 gigawatts (GW), if fully developed. Currently, Sarawak is targeting an increase in its generating capacity to 10,000 MW or 10 GW by 2030, and to 15,000 MW or 15 GW by 2035. 'Apart from hydropower potential, there is also huge potential for us to develop this RE through solar power and bio-energy from biomass and waste,' he explained. Awang Tengah also revealed that Sarawak will be hosting Sarawak Week with the theme 'Sustainability for Tomorrow' at the Malaysia Pavilion for the World Expo Osaka from August 4-10. The Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka spans 2,654.52 square meters across three floors, reflecting the nation's diverse culture and dynamic economy. With the theme 'Weaving a Future in Harmony', the pavilion highlights Malaysia's commitment to a sustainable, inclusive and forward-looking future. The pavilion also serves as a hub for international collaboration and dialogue, as well as pocket talks, product launches, memorandum of understanding signings and business matching sessions. It will also host forums, summits, and networking events that would position Malaysia as a dynamic global partner.
