MMEA Overcomes Aggressive Foreign Vessel In Miri Waters

KUCHING, May 31 (Bernama) -- A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) patrol faced tense moments when they subdued an aggressive attempt by a Vietnamese fishing boat to trespass into Malaysian waters, near Miri, in northern Sarawak yesterday. Its director Miri Zone director, Maritime Captain Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said the standoff occurred when the crew of a vessel from Vietnam, one of the foreign national vessels (VNA) involved, refused to cooperate when they were confronted at around 31 nautical miles (nm) northwest of Kuala Niah, Miri. 'They carried out dangerous manoeuvres, throwing hard and sharp objects at the MMEA enforcement personnel in rough seas, threatening the safety and lives of the security forces,' he said in a statement today.

MMEA overcomes aggressive foreign vessel in Miri waters

KUCHING: A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) patrol faced tense moments when they subdued an aggressive attempt by a Vietnamese fishing boat to trespass into Malaysian waters, near Miri, in northern Sarawak on Friday (May 30). "They carried out dangerous manoeuvres, throwing hard and sharp objects at the MMEA enforcement personnel in rough seas, threatening the safety and lives of the security forces,' he said in a statement on Saturday (May 31). However, the situation was successfully controlled and the foreign vessel, with three Vietnamese on board, was detained without any injuries to maritime personnel on duty. Earlier, the MMEA had detained another foreign vessel and five Indonesians on board at a position 38 nm northwest of Kuala Suai, Miri. Khairol said the two vessels and crew, aged between 25 and 53, were then taken to the Miri Maritime Zone Complex in a journey which took nearly 18 hours due to rough weather over the long distance. According to him, the two boats with fishing and navigation equipment, worth a total of about RM3.3mil, were seized, while the crew members are being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985.- Bernama

MMEA Miri nabs two foreign vessels for alleged illegal fishing

The detained Vietnamese vessel. MIRI (May 31): The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained two foreign fishing vessels for attempting to carry out illegal fishing activities off Miri yesterday. The vessels, from Indonesia and Vietnam respectively, were detected approximately 38 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Suai and 31 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Niah. MMEA Miri director Capt Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said the vessels were intercepted during Op Permai 01/2019, Op Naga Timur, and Op Tiris 3.0. 'The Indonesian vessel was detained at around 12pm, while the Vietnamese vessel was detected and detained at approximately 5.45pm following a public tip-off regarding its presence,' he said in a statement. During the attempt to intercept the Vietnamese vessel, the patrol crew encountered resistance as the foreign crew performed dangerous manoeuvres, putting the safety of the officers at risk. However, the situation was quickly brought under control, and the vessel was successfully detained without any injuries reported. A total of eight crew members, including two captains – five Indonesians and three Vietnamese aged between 25 and 53 – were taken into custody. All detainees were escorted to the Miri Vessel Detention Centre for further investigation. Mohd Khairol said the case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985, which provides for fines of up to RM6 million for captains and RM600,000 for each crew member involved in fishing without a permit or trespassing in Malaysian waters. 'The MMEA remains committed to enforcing the law in Malaysia's maritime zones and will not compromise with any offenders,' he added. The public is urged to report any suspicious maritime activity or emergencies by contacting the Sarawak Maritime Operations Centre Miri at 085-649 111, the MMEA Sarawak office at 082-432544 or 082-432016, or via the emergency hotline 999. foreign fishing vessels miri MMEA

MMEA foils attempt to smuggle exotic birds worth RM100,000

BATU PAHAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 1,300 exotic birds, believed to be run by two local men, early yesterday. Batu Pahat Maritime Zone director Maritime Commander Mohammad Zaini Zainal said the birds, estimated to be worth RM100,000, were found on a fibre boat intercepted by a patrol vessel at about 1am. "Checks on the boat uncovered 114 baskets containing murai batu (white-rumped shama) and murai kampung (oriental magpie robin). "The two men, aged 26 and 27, failed to produce documents permitting the export of wildlife. "Both suspects were taken to the Batu Pahat Maritime Zone for further investigation. The case is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010," he said in a statement last night. Zaini said the success was the result of intelligence gathered on smuggling activities in the waters off Tanjung Laboh, believed to be a key transit point for wildlife trafficking syndicates. He said the smuggling attempt was likely driven by strong market demand, with syndicates often using small boats at night to avoid detection.
