Petrol smuggling attempt in Sandakan foiled, two held

SANDAKAN: An attempt to smuggle RM27,000 worth of petrol to a neighbouring country was foiled by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), here, early Wednesday. According to Sandakan Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Captain Muhamad Suhairy Hussain, a cargo boat was spotted about 0.8 nautical miles west of Pulau Berhala, which tried to flee when approached by a MMEA patrol vessel, but was intercepted at 1.35am. 'Upon inspection, 62 jerry cans containing a total of 1,550 litres of petrol were found and believed to be intended for smuggling to a neighbouring country. 'The skipper and crew failed to present valid identification documents, while the boat itself did not have a valid operating licence,' he said in a statement. Two individuals, aged 42 and 38, were detained in the operation. The case is being investigated under the Supply Control Act 1962, Immigration Act 1959/63 and Sabah Ports and Harbours Enactment 2002 for offences including smuggling of controlled goods, unlawful entry and operating a vessel without valid documentation. Two men arrested for trying to smuggle 1,550 litres of petrol to neighbouring countries
SANDAKAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) arrested two foreign men with 62 barrels, containing 1,550 litres of petrol, on a cargo ship 0.8 nautical miles west of Pulau Berhala here early Wednesday morning (July 30), believed to be intended for smuggling to neighbouring countries. Sandakan maritime zone director Maritime Captain Muhamad Suhairy Hussain said the men, aged 38 and 42, were the skipper and crew member of the cargo ship, and were arrested at 1.35am after the vessel was spotted acting suspiciously and trying to flee when approached by MMEA forces. "A search of the boat found the barrels. Both suspects also did not have identification documents, and the cargo vessel did not have an operating licence," he said in a statement here on Wednesday. Meanwhile, he said the case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1962, the Immigration Act 1959/1963 and the Sabah Port and Wharf Enactment 2002. Suhairy also urged the public to channel information related to smuggling activities or maritime crimes to the Sandakan Maritime Operations Centre at 089-222519 or 999 for further action. – Bernama

Drug suspects jump into river to escape during Kuantan raid
KUANTAN: Three men suspected to be high on drugs were daring enough to jump into the river to shake off the authorities on their trail during Ops Guardian in Sungai Belat here today. Deputy director of operations of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Pahang, Maritime Captain Mohd Marmizi Md Nor said the dramatic river chase occurred at around 10am today when his party was carrying out a joint operation with other security and enforcement agencies. He said two men were trying to hide under the jetty while the other one swam away to escape. "Besides inspecting fishing boats in Sungai Kuantan, we also conducted raids on hot spots that were targeted, namely the jetty here. "In the end, we managed to arrest the three male suspects, aged between 40 and 50 years old, trying to escape on suspicion of being involved in drug abuse," he said here today. Meanwhile, he said Ops Guardian, held for the first time in collaboration with seven other agencies, took place over two days and will conclude tomorrow. He said the focus of the operation was on the Sungai Kuantan estuary and Kuantan Port to check for any violations of the law.
