New MMC developments to be announced at Hawana

KUALA LUMPUR: The latest on the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) will be announced during the summit of the coming National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ). The Communications Minister said the MMC was set up with the clear mission of defending media freedom, ensuring fair and responsible reporting, and serving as a channel for the people to air grievances against the media in a civil manner. He said the other notable achievement was when the Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 in February. 'After more than 50 years of discussion, our country has finally succeeded in establishing the Malaysian Media Council, a self-regulatory body that brings together all types of media, including print, broadcast and digital,' he said at the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama-Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday. Fahmi said with the setting up of the MMC and other initiatives, the government was laying a strong foundation for the future of the Malaysian media. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', Hawana 2025 will be held at WTC KL from June 13 to 15 with the highlight of the celebration to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 14. More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media representatives from Asean member countries have been invited to bring together the professional media fraternity and industry experts while exchanging ideas and forging strategic relationships. Fahmi said the Bernama (Amendment) Act 2024 was gazetted on May 14 covering entities disseminating news via newspapers, publications, radio, TV and other mass communication platforms, including electronic and digital media. 'This amendment also aims to ensure Bernama's structure and functions are in line with developments in information and communications technology, as well as meeting the needs of the increasingly complex media industry,' he said. Meanwhile, May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu newspaper that day back in 1939. At the event, Fahmi also launched the Bernama Motorhome-Mobile Studio, making it the first local media agency to utilise a recreational vehicle with mobile broadcast studio facilities that can be deployed to quickly disseminate news.

KUALA LUMPUR: New developments regarding the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) are expected to be announced during the summit of the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 on June 14, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He stated that the MMC was established with a clear mission: to defend media freedom, ensure fair and responsible reporting, and serve as a channel for the public to voice complaints against the media in a civil manner. "In building this ecosystem, another important achievement was recorded this year when the Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 in February. "After more than 50 years of discussion, our country has finally succeeded in establishing the Malaysian Media Council, a self-regulatory body that brings together all types of media, including print, broadcast and digital media," he said. Fahmi said this when speaking at the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama-Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here on Tuesday (June 3). Also present were Ministry of Communications secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the Hawana 2025 Project director, as well as Bernama's top management. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', Hawana 2025 will be held at WTC KL from June 13 to 15 with the highlight of the celebration on June 14, which will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media representatives from Asean member countries are invited to bring together the professional media fraternity and industry experts while exchanging ideas and forging strategic relationships. Fahmi also said that on May 14, 2025, the Bernama (Amendment) Act 2024 was gazetted, covering entities that disseminate news through various platforms such as newspapers, publications, radio, television, as well as other mass communication platforms, including electronic and digital media. "This amendment also aims to ensure that Bernama's structure and functions are in line with developments in information and communication technology, as well as meeting the needs of the increasingly complex media industry," he said. Meanwhile, May 29 was gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players who have become a medium to shape the minds of an informed society in fostering cooperation and driving positive change in the industry. At today's event, Fahmi also officiated the Bernama Motorhome-Mobile Studio, making Bernama the first media agency in Malaysia to utilise a recreational vehicle, or motorhome, equipped with mobile broadcast studio facilities that can be dynamically deployed to disseminate news quickly. "Congratulations and well done to Bernama for always striving to improve the quality of its services and excel as a trusted source of news. "I believe that the Bernama Mobile Studio facility can strengthen external coverage operations and news production with greater flexibility," said Fahmi. - Bernama

HAWANA 2025 To Strengthen ASEAN Media Ties, Knowledge Sharing

GENERAL By Shaidathul Suhana Ros KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- The upcoming National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025, set to welcome media practitioners from across ASEAN, is expected to become a vibrant platform for exchanging expertise and experiences in modern journalism. President of the Gabungan Kelab Media Malaysia, Mohamad Fauzi Ishak, said events like HAWANA offer valuable opportunities for regional media professionals to learn from one another, especially in embracing technological and digital advancements crucial to contemporary journalism. 'This will not only enhance regional cooperation through information-sharing and discussions on current issues faced by ASEAN countries, particularly in communication and broadcasting, but also foster strategic partnerships that can elevate the quality of news delivery in the region,' he told Bernama. He said that the convergence of diverse media approaches within ASEAN on platforms like HAWANA could pave the way for mutual learning, especially in mastering digital tools increasingly essential in today's fast-paced media landscape. On similarities and differences in the region's media landscape, Mohamad Fauzi, who is also Johor Media Club president, said ASEAN member states generally share similar journalistic ethics, though media regulations and legal frameworks differ significantly. 'The media industry in ASEAN reflects the region's cultural diversity, varying political systems, economic development levels, and democratic maturity. Each country adopts its own approach to managing the media sector. 'While ethical journalism principles are largely consistent, the legal provisions governing media and communication vary across the region. These regulatory differences present opportunities for Malaysian media to innovate and lead by example,' he noted. He cited the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 passed by Parliament in February as a progressive step toward more open and inclusive media regulation which allows industry players to actively participate in shaping important decisions, marking a move towards greater transparency and shared governance.

HAWANA Platform To Keep Media Relevant, Strengthen Regional Ties

By Noorazlina Jindeh KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 (Bernama) -- The involvement of media practitioners from across ASEAN at this year's National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) is set to be a platform to ensure local media remain relevant and capable of fostering cooperation and co-existing with other media. Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) president Mariah Doksil said HAWANA would provide an opportunity for agencies and journalists alike to share experiences and learn from each other, especially in the increasingly challenging world of journalism. 'This will help us face our biggest challenge in this digital age, especially concerning fake news,' she told Bernama recently. Mariah also expressed hope that this year's HAWANA would serve as a platform to discuss various issues affecting the media industry and refine them to ensure that journalists carry out their duties more effectively. She said issues that needed consideration included disrupted salary payments due to reduced advertising revenue, as well as the need to strengthen media freedom and journalistic ethics. Jesselton Times editor Newmond Tibin opined that the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council's Founding Board should be realised in conjunction with this year's HAWANA celebration, as it was time for the council to function as a legal entity following the passing of the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 in the Dewan Rakyat in February. Newmond said journalists and media practitioners had long awaited the council's formation, and if it materialised this June, it would be a meaningful gift to the nation's media fraternity.

HAWANA Should Serve As Reminder That The Role Of Journalists Is Ongoing

REGION - SOUTHERN > NEWS By Mohd Fakri Awang Lah MELAKA, May 14 (Bernama) -- The National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) celebrations should serve as a clear reminder to all parties that the role of media practitioners in this country is continuous and must be recognised, especially in their vital function of disseminating information. Melaka Media Practitioners' Club (Pendika) president Amir Mamat stated that HAWANA, celebrated on May 29 each year, is an opportunity to bring the public closer to the witnesses and storytellers of significant events. bootstrap slideshow 'This year, HAWANA should be extended to various layers to provide a better understanding of the true roles of journalists and media practitioners to the people,' he told Bernama recently. Amir said that to enhance and deliver effective news reporting, all parties—including state governments—should regard journalists as 'close partners' and not feel hesitant about building friendships with members of the media. He also expressed hope that the Malaysian Media Council founding board can be formed in conjunction with this year's celebrations to better address the challenges in the media industry. He said that the formation is expected to be a starting point for many positive developments, particularly in ensuring that the journalism profession is no longer taken lightly. 'With the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council, there is nothing for anyone—whether journalists or those being reported on- to fear, as long as the reporting does not violate any established journalistic ethics,' he said. In February, Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024, which aims, among other things, to safeguard media freedom, ensuring the public receives accurate, credible, and fair information.
