Whitecaps' owners change course from 'sale' to looking for a 'new partner'
If you thought that the Vancouver Whitecaps' ownership group was looking to get out completely … well you're wrong. In the months since owners Greg Kerfoot, Steve Luczo, Jeff Mallett and Steve Nash declared the club was for sale, everyone around the team was operating under the assumption that someone, from somewhere, would take over as owners, that the hands of financial control would be new ones. That is no longer is the case, Mallett acknowledged to Postmedia Thursday morning, following a boisterous introductory press conference for Thomas Müller. It's not often that exiting owners underwrite major investments. And yet the Caps' quartet has done just that in signing Müller, the biggest international signing this club has made since the 1979 addition of Alan Ball. It's a major investment in the club's playing fortunes, and a sign, Mallett admitted, of how he and his partners are looking at their future as owners has changed. 'We need a partner,' he answered flatly to a question about what the Muller signing means for the ownership search. 'We are willing to stay and bring the knowledge base we have.' He noted that this is different from how things were presented last December. Then it was, 'We're looking to sell.' But things have shifted, Mallett said. Now there's a prospect for a new stadium and talks with the city about taking on the land at the PNE where the current Hastings Racecourse stands. Having their own stadium, away from the current lease at B.C. Place , would change their ability to compete in the long term in what Mallett termed 'MLS 3.0.' But that's where a new investor comes in. Kerfoot, Luczo, Mallett and Nash need help with building a stadium and funding the future of the club. 'The stadium being a possibility changed the dynamic of the offering in the market,' he said. At the same time, lead investors Kerfoot and Luczo are looking to reduce the financial burden of ownership. 'They are looking to lessen their load,' Mallett explained. His own stake, and Nash's, has always been much smaller. And their ownership future was inevitably a question that came up during contract talks with Müller, and what they told Müller about the situation caused no concern for him. 'He liked what he saw,' Kerfoot said. And so their search continues. They've had a number of intriguing enquiries, Kerfoot admitted. Some have even had hands-on tours of the Whitecaps' facilities. But if a sale is imminent, Kerfoot wouldn't say. We remain in the proverbial 'watch this space' era. pjohnston@

‘For a small island, it has an enormous coastline': Timmy Mallett cycles 3,500 miles around Irish seaboard
Former children's TV presenter Timmy Mallett aimed to 'bring a smile with every mile' as he cycled more than 3,500 miles around Ireland's entire coastline. The English broadcaster is best known for presenting roles on TV-am and the Wide Awake Club, as well as for his 1990 number one hit 'Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini'. Recently, the 69-year-old has taken to the coastal roads of the island of Ireland, after circumnavigating all of Great Britain in 2023. Having cycled all 905 miles around NI last year, he initially returned this year to tackle the Wild Atlantic Way. However, with bathroom renovations still ongoing at home, his wife encouraged him to tackle the whole of the island. Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph at the Titanic Slipway — his starting point three months ago — Mallett said he was largely inspired by his late brother Martin, who passed away in 2018. 'I have two big brothers: Paul, the eldest, and Martin,' Mallett explained. 'Martin, with language and learning difficulties, never let Down's syndrome define him. 'You found that Martin would live every minute of the day in the moment, the here and now. 'I realised that with Martin, with his gift for living in the now, it was really important. He would say: 'Ah, buba, you and me. I'm happy.' 'So, this is a journey about inspiring people to reach their potential. We don't have to be the best yet, just the best that we can be. 'I am keen on curiosity. I think curiosity is a fine and fabulous attribute that we don't pay enough attention to. 'I like seeing what you can find on your own around the corner. 'I cycled round the coast of Waterford. I came to 'Norn Iron' to see if I could do a circumnavigation of it. Nine-hundred and five miles later, [I realised] it's an enormous country. That is when I heard a small voice: 'Don't forget the forgotten county' — Donegal, further north, which is weirdly in the South. So, I did another 550 miles covering the coast of Donegal, all those finger peninsulas. 'That is when I wondered if I could do some more, to go down the Wild Atlantic Way. 'Two months later, I go to Kinsale, and Mrs Mallett said: 'Well, I am doing the bathroom in the house... Why don't you just keep going to see how far around the rest of the country you can go?' 'That is what this moment [arriving at Titanic Slipway] is about, because I have now cycled around the entire coast of the island of Ireland. For a small island, it has an enormous coastline. It transpires that I have cycled over 3,500 miles. That's a lot of coastline.' With such a famous face on the road, Mallett was stopped 'every kilometre, every day' by fans. 'It's a wonderful and joyful moment, because I make it a rule to always stop. I have found that this island... the Irish have a profound gift for kindness and generosity. There is a warmth of a welcome that is truly lovely. 'There is something special to somebody around these islands. Some highlights would include going to Blacksod Lighthouse in Co Mayo. 'There, I came across the grandson of Maureen Sweeney. In 1944, Maureen had been sending weather reports which she didn't know were crucial for the D-Day landings. 'Now, at the same time, my mum was working at the Supreme headquarters on the weather forecasting for D-Day. 'Maureen's grandson Fergus says that on that day, when she sent her weather forecast, a squeaky-voiced English lady picked up the phone to check the report. 'And I love the fact that these two women had a role in this titanic struggle of the time in D-Day. 'It was lovely to hear the other side of that story 80 years later. I think it has been an important pilgrimage.' When asked about his transition from TV presenter to adventurer and painter, Mallett described his life as having 'different aspects'. 'I think that we all have different aspects in our lives, and talents can be important for us to develop. 'I've been lucky enough. I had a great TV career, I had a number one hit record throughout the world, and now my art is collected across the globe. 'The important thing really is to reach our potential, make the most of each and every day, and to bring a smile. Bring a smile with every mile.'

Top criminologist speaks about missing teen Pheobe Bishop after bombshell twists
Police have now declared multiple crime scenes in the case of missing teen Pheobe Bishop, 17, with a top criminologist saying it was an 'unusual' and 'concerning' development for the investigation. Investigators have declared a crime scene at a property in the rural town of Gin Gin, 50km west of Bundaberg, Queensland, where Bishop lived with two people who were not direct family members. Police have also seized a grey Hyundai ix35 which Bishop was last seen travelling in to Bundaberg Regional Airport and which belonged to one of the teenager's housemates. Police are now working on the theory Bishop never made it to the airport last Thursday. She was due to board a flight to Western Australia on May 15 but she never checked in. Criminologist Xanthe Mallett said police appeared very concerned for the teen's welfare, as she discussed the latest developments with Sunrise host Nat Barr on Thursday. 'It is unusual for the police to declare a crime scene at a (missing) person's home. They would obviously go there and search for clues as to where they may be ... but they are very concerned for Phoebe's welfare at this stage.' Barr pressed Mallett on reports the teenager was seen arguing with the driver of the Hyundai. Mallett said: 'That's very significant, because that may well be the last known sighting of Pheobe before she vanished. 'They will certainly be trying to plot the time between when the car left the property and when she vanished. 'They will be looking for witnesses that can corroborate anybody's movements, especially those people who may have been the last to see her or (the) last known to have seen her. '(They will be) talking to as many people as possible, trying to figure out in the days and weeks and hours leading up to Pheobe's disappearance, who was with her.' Pheobe Bishop and her mother Kylie Johnson. Credit: Supplied Bishop's bank account has also not been accessed since she was reported missing. Bishop's mother has been pleading for help on social media to find her missing daughter. 'This is really worrying for the family and my heart goes out to them,' Mallett said. 'I've seen some of the social media posts and I really wish the police could provide better news a week on. 'But this is very suspicious. 'This is not a young woman who would normally disappear without speaking to her family. I'm very concerned for her as are the police.' Pheobe is described as approximately 180cm tall, with a pale complexion, long dyed red hair, and hazel eyes. She was last seen carrying luggage and wearing a green tank top and grey sweatpants.
