After a year of preparation, United Hospital Center now advanced primary stroke center
BRIDGEPORT — Stroke patients living in Harrison and Marion counties will no longer have to travel solely to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital to receive care. West Virginia University Medicine United Hospital Center in Bridgeport now offers advanced stroke care as of Wednesday. Residents far south of Morgantown who have a stroke will have a care option closer to home. When it comes to stroke care, time is of the essence and when every minute counts, and minimizing travel time becomes an urgent necessity. 'Patients coming in, having signs and symptoms of a stroke, making sure that we are within 10 minutes,' Brenda Conch, UHC registered nurse and stroke coordinator, said. 'Getting a provider looking at them within 15 minutes. Within 25 minutes we need to get them to a scanner and see if there's a bleed or is this a negative CT scan. We need to have that read by our radiologist within 60 minutes and giving that thrombolytic medication' The faster medical providers can treat a patient who is having a stroke, the better the outcome will be. 'One of the goals we look at three months after a stroke is, can you walk?' United Hospital Center Neurologist Daniel Mandel said. 'To determine if somebody's independent or not, that's really our goal.' The facility underwent a rigorous review on April 18. After completing their onsite review, the Joint Commision, a major health care quality accrediting board, awarded UHC with its Gold Seal of Approval, and the American Stroke Association certified UHC as an advanced primary stroke center. 'Advanced primary stroke center certification recognizes health care organizations committed to striving for excellence and fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,' Ken Grubbs, executive vice president of Accreditation and Certification Operations at the Joint Commission, said. Dr. Mandel said he and Conch came aboard at UHC roughly a year ago, and did a lot of the work to make sure UHC qualified for primary stroke certification. There were a lot of facets to reaching that certification, Mandel said it meant ensuring the hospital has the advanced brain imaging required to diagnose strokes, the right personnel in radiology as well as training the staff in stroke care. Mandel said the process involves a lot of moving parts that had to be coordinated into a unit that can manage stroke patients. Conch said stroke care begins with awareness in the community, and communicating to residents that a brain attack is as important as a heart attack. She said anyone who is experiencing neurological symptoms needs to call 911 and get to a hospital. However, before UHC built up its ability to take care of stroke patients, there was a void of care for patients in the area who needed immediate treatment. 'We didn't have any of the certifications that we needed to be a first choice for stroke care,' Conch said. 'Now, EMS recognizes that we are indeed a first choice and will bring those patients to us.' While UHC can now provide most of the care for a stroke, patients who need to have a blood clot taken out will still need to travel to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. But short of surgery, UHC can now keep stroke patients as opposed to before, when they would administer clot busting drugs but not keep patients for observation. UHC's certification also reduces the burden on Ruby Memorial as far as the patients they have to accept. Conch said strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. She added there are 3.4 million US residents who are living with a disability related to stroke. That puts a lot of burden on patients, their families and the health care system. According to the Stroke Recovery Foundation, only 10% of patients recover completely. The remaining 90% live with some level of major or minor impairment. Conch said 80% of strokes can be avoided in the first place. According to the Foundation, the biggest risk factors are obesity, lack of exercise and smoking. The obesity rate in West Virginia is roughly 40% and 21% of adults smoke. Part of the mission of stroke education is to communicate those risk factors to the community. 'We have 797,000 people that have strokes annually,' she said. 'One-hundred-forthy-thousand of those die. Our goal is for them not to die.'

This AI Giant Is Among the Top 5 Holdings of Billionaires David Tepper, Philippe Laffont, and Stephen Mandel Jr. -- and It's Not Nvidia
Billionaires are betting on the AI revolution, and this particular company already is winning in the field. This tech player also has built a solid earnings track record over time. 10 stocks we like better than Amazon › Investors, including billionaires, have generated enormous returns by investing in Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) in recent years. The artificial intelligence (AI) chip giant climbed more than 800% from the start of 2023 through the end of last year as demand for its products and services soared. And with the AI market forecast to reach beyond $2 trillion a few years down the road, it's likely Nvidia will continue to benefit. But it's important to remember that Nvidia isn't the only attractive AI bet to be found. In fact, right now, some of the world's top investors are favoring another AI giant over Nvidia. This particular player is among the top five holdings of billionaires David Tepper of Appaloosa Management, Philippe Laffont of Coatue Management, and Stephen Mandel Jr. of Lone Pine Capital. This company, like Nvidia, already has brought in billions of dollars in revenue thanks to AI -- and could win as the AI boom continues. Let's find out more. First, it's important to note that these three billionaires have significant positions in technology stocks, with other such players among their top 10 holdings. So they clearly believe in the AI revolution and are setting themselves up to potentially gain as AI becomes more and more a part of our daily lives and the operations at businesses of every size. For example, Tepper and Mandel each have three Magnificent Seven stocks among their 10 most heavily weighted holdings, and Laffont has four. So, which company has caught the eye of these technology-focused investors? None other than AI powerhouse Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN). As of the first quarter of the year, Amazon is the third biggest stock position in Tepper's $8.3 billion portfolio, the second-biggest in Laffont's $22 billion portfolio, and the third- largest in Mandel's $11 billion fund. Here are the details: Tepper holds 2,510,000 Amazon shares, and the stock represents 5.7% of the portfolio. Laffont holds 10,753,808 Amazon shares, and the stock represents 9.02% of his portfolio. Mandel holds 4,352,740 Amazon shares, and they represent 7.15% of his portfolio. This is according to the billionaires' 13Fs, filings that managers of $100 million or more must submit to the Securities and Exchange Commission on a quarterly basis. Now the question is: These billionaires clearly see Amazon as a fantastic AI investment, but is it right for you too? After all, though billionaires have demonstrated their investment expertise, some of their moves may not suit your investment strategy or comfort with risk. It's important to take these elements into consideration before diving in. You probably are most familiar with Amazon thanks to its e-commerce business. It's built an empire in the area, and one that extends around the globe. The operation helps the company generate billions of dollars in revenue year after year, and its extensive fulfillment network and popular subscription program Prime offer it a significant competitive advantage, or moat. But Amazon also is becoming a leader in AI, using the technology to streamline those e-commerce operations and even developing and selling AI products and services to customers through its Amazon Web Services (AWS) unit. In fact, due to Amazon's aggressive push into the AI space, AWS recently delivered a $117 billion annual revenue run rate. So Amazon already is generating significant growth from this hot technology. And since AWS is the world's leading cloud services provider, it's in the perfect spot to capture more and more business. As AWS customers develop AI projects, they have all that they need right at their fingertips on AWS -- from access to top chips like Nvidia's to a fully managed service that tailors popular large language models to a customer's needs. The AI buildout continues, and AWS is set to gain from this and from the next stages of AI, as customers apply AI to their businesses more and more. Meanwhile, Amazon offers a solid track record of earnings growth and has demonstrated its ability to manage turbulent times and go on to grow. For example, the company revamped its cost structure when higher inflation hurt earnings a few years ago and returned to growth within a year. All of this shows that Amazon is well positioned to benefit from the AI boom, but the stock also offers you security thanks to its well-established and profitable e-commerce and cloud businesses. And this means that, whether you're a cautious or aggressive investor, you may, like the billionaires, want to make Amazon one of your key AI bets. 2000 Oklahoma Sooners team among the best in the 21st century, per The Athletic
2000 Oklahoma Sooners team among the best in the 21st century, per The Athletic There have been so many great college football teams over the first 25 years of the 21st century. Undoubtedly, the Oklahoma Sooners would have to be represented on a list ranking the 25 best single-season teams since 2000. The Athletic's Stewart Mandel took on that very task this week. While some of the great OU teams from years like 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2017 were omitted from Mandel's list, the most recent OU team to win a national title made the Top 25. That is, of course, the 2000 team that went undefeated and won it all in Bob Stoops' second year at the helm. Mandel placed the '00 Sooners at No. 20 in his rankings. He compared Oklahoma to the 2010 Auburn team that also went unbeaten and won the national title. "Like 2010 Auburn, this team did not fit the mold of a national champion, producing just six draft picks, though one was future Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams," Mandel said. "But credit where credit's due: After starting ranked 19th, Bob Stoops' Sooners beat three consecutive top-10 foes in October, including then-No. 1 Nebraska. A banged-up Josh Heupel, the Heisman runner-up, struggled down the stretch, but the defense shut out an explosive Florida State offense led by Heisman winner Chris Weinke in the Orange Bowl." That team was led by Heupel and a deep talented group of weapons on the offensive side of the ball, opposite at dominant Mike Stoops-Brent Venables defense. Williams, Torrance Marshall, Rocky Calmus and J.T Thatcher helped Oklahoma take down Kansas State (twice), Texas and Nebraska. Marshall's trash talk to Weinke ahead of OU's 13-2 victory embodied the attitude that Sooner team played with, especially on defense. The Florida State team that the Sooners took down in the national title game did not make Mandel's list, but the 2000 Miami Hurricanes, who didn't even make the title game, ranked all the way up at No. 10. That team did take down FSU in the regular season, but missed the national championship game due to a loss early in the year against Washington. One has to wonder how a team that wasn't even good enough to play for a national championship and lost a game is ten spots better than the consensus, undefeated national champ from the same season. That 2000 Oklahoma team was an unexpected juggernaut that put the Sooners back on the map with the loudest statement possible. After a decade of depression between the tenures of Barry Switzer and Bob Stoops, OU returned to the pinnacle of the sport. Now, with Brent Venables at the controls, OU hopes they're building a program that can replicate that kind of championship-winning success.

Where Oregon Football ranks among the best teams of this century
Where Oregon Football ranks among the best teams of this century The Oregon Ducks have undoubtedly been one of the best teams in college football over the past few years, routinely near the top of the rankings and in the College Football Playoff mix with Heisman Trophy contenders and dozens of players sent to the NFL draft. However, the success in Eugene extends far beyond the last few years. According to The Athletic's Stewart Mandel, the Ducks are among the best teams in all of college football when it comes to the 21st century, dating back to 2000. Mandel recently ranked the top 25 teams of the century, with the Ducks coming in at No. 7 on the list. The top 10 went as follows. Oregon's place at No. 7 on the list is impressive, considering that they are the only team in the top 10 who has not won a national championship in that time. However, they have had a Heisman winner and multiple Heisman finalists, as well as two appearances in the national championship and three Rose Bowl victories. 2004 USC ranked as top five team of 21st century by The Athletic
2004 USC ranked as top five team of 21st century by The Athletic It is impossible to ignore the dominance of 2004 USC football in any historical assessment. It is widely accepted among college football fans (outside of Auburn, Alabama, that is) that the 2004 USC Trojans were one of the greatest college football teams of the modern era. That team went wire-to-wire as No. 1 in the country, dominating Oklahoma in the BCS Championship Game at the Orange Bowl to claim the school's 11th national championship. Where does 2004 USC rank among the best teams of the 21st century? In a recent story, Stewart Mandel of The Athletic gave his top 25 college football teams of the past 25 years. Mandel had the 2004 Trojans at No. 5 on the list, behind only 2001 Miami, 2019 LSU, 2005 Texas, and 2020 Alabama. "This remains the last team to go wire-to-wire at No. 1 in the AP poll," Mandel wrote about the Trojans. "[Matt] Leinart and [Reggie] Bush were the Trojans' undisputed stars, but defensive tackles [Shaun} Cody and Mike Patterson led a dominant defense that held foes to 82 rushing yards per game. USC endured scares, holding off Aaron Rodgers-led Cal on a goal-line stand, and surviving at Oregon State thanks to Bush's 65-yard punt return. But it capped the season by thumping 12-0 Oklahoma in one of the most lopsided national title games ever." While certainly impressive, most USC fans likely believe that the Trojans should be higher on the list. While they did not play the toughest of schedules (it was a relatively weak year for the Pac-10 and Notre Dame), they largely dominated every opponent that they faced, including the famous 55-19 drubbing of Oklahoma in the national championship game. In addition, the 2005 edition of USC came in at No. 13 on the list. Had that team defeated Texas in the Rose Bowl, it may very well have gone down as the greatest team of the century, if not all time. But thanks to Vince Young's infamous touchdown run in the final seconds, the Trojans came up one game short of a historic third consecutive national title. Finally, the first team to miss the cut of the rankings was 2008 USC. One of the most underrated teams of all time, Pete Carroll's squad boasted arguably the best defense of the modern era. Although they went 11-1 with a dominant nonconference victory over Ohio State, an early season road loss at Oregon State kept the Trojans out of the national championship game. USC responded by hammering Penn State in the Rose Bowl to cap the program's fourth and final 12-win season under Carroll.
