MU's sports year concludes with achievements and challenges
Mangaluru: Mangalore University sports academic year concluded with several achievements. It successfully completed its annual sports activities, won several laurels, and set records. The university also conducted a few inter-university events. The only setback it witnessed was from April to the present, where outdoor activities saw poor participation of sportspersons due to extreme heat and rain. The department, with the help of colleges under Mangalore University, was able to host the All India Inter-University Kho-Kho Championship in Udupi, where 16 top university teams from across India, that qualified through their respective zonal tournaments, competed for the national title. Mangalore University acquires data from UUCMS to issue physical marks card
Mangaluru: After several deliberations, Mangalore University (MU), which was assured to issue consolidated physical mark cards for its NEP batch students, has acquired data from the UUCMS to facilitate the process. According to officials, the printing of mark cards for PG students under the NEP syllabus is underway, and UG and other courses will take some time. MU needs to print over 45,000 mark cards for UG courses and is in the process of procuring materials, especially printing paper, for the same. There is a pressing demand from two batches of NEP-UG students to issue physical mark cards at the earliest, as it is hindering their prospects, whether for a job or higher studies, since currently, mark cards are issued digitally and available on DigiLocker. "We were requesting to give all the data of our students to UUCMS. After long discussions and pressure, they finally handed over the data to us. It took nearly two months to procure the data," said H Devendrappa, registrar (evaluation) of MU. The syndicate body of MU has already approved providing a consolidated marks card to candidates, and procuring the data has delayed the entire process. It will be an issue for both candidates and MU when an issued marks card comes for verification of marks card/verification of genuineness. Once all this cross-checking is over, MU will start printing the same," said Devendrappa. Meanwhile, the printing of marks card of NEP-PG courses is in progress. "Their number comes around 4,500 to 5,000 marks cards. It will be issued soon. The UG and related course marks card number is 45,000 plus. There are two NEP batches, 2022-23 and 2023-24, whose marks card need to be issued at the moment," he said. With the delay in issuing physical marks card, the passed candidates continue to suffer. They are unable to secure jobs and get into higher education institutions abroad since digitally issued marks card are not accepted, considering them not to be genuine. The students' union under Mangalore University has been fighting for one year to issue physical marks card for all under the NEP syllabus.

Mangalore University allocates seed grant for research
Mangaluru: Mangalore University (MU) has, for the first time, earmarked a total of Rs 5 lakh as a seed grant to encourage research on campus. This allocation is part of its budget for the financial year 2025-26 that was presented during the first special academic council meeting held on Thursday. Stressing the rationale behind the fund allocation, PL Dharma, vice-chancellor of MU, said that this initiative aims to fund a minimum of five of the best research proposals invited from the permanent faculty of MU this time. Initially, the plan is to allocate a maximum of Rs 1 lakh for each research proposal received from the faculty. Closure of courses with less demand Dharma, when asked about the closure of several UG courses, said that at University College, Hampankatta, a constituent college of MU, the BA travel and tourism management course has been stopped and merged with BBA. MU will also strengthen BBA courses by increasing admissions and offering a one-semester internship experience. The University College will offer a BCA course from the next academic year. "It has been decided that any courses under constituent colleges of MU with fewer than 30 admissions are not economically viable and will be closed from the next academic year (2025-26). The reason is that they don't generate income, and secondly, justice is not done to students since all the faculty here are guest faculty with not much academic experience. The academic exposure will be less," he added, stressing the reason behind course closures. MU has also decided to shift all PG courses offered at constituent colleges to the Konaje campus from next year. Only the International Business MBA offered at Evening College, Hampankatta, will remain as it has a good response, he added, noting that MU has requested the govt to take over constituent colleges under it. 11 athletes from Alva's Foundation chosen to represent India in World University Games
Eleven athletes from Alva's Education Foundation's Sports Adoption Scheme, representing Mangalore University, have been selected to represent India in the forthcoming World University Games 2025, scheduled to be held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, from July 16 to 27. Foundation president M. Mohan Alva told reporters in Moodbidri on Wednesday that with the selection, the total number of athletes from the foundation participating in the games has risen to 32. He said the selection was a matter of pride for the institution and the State. The athletes were selected during the trials held at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), a deemed-to-be university in Bhubaneswar. In the men's category, the selected athletes are Gagan (5,000 meters run), Sachin (20 km walk), Balakrishna (400 meters run) and N. Taufique (decathlon). Those selected in the women's category are Deekshita Ramakrishna Gowda (400 meters hurdles), Basanti Kumari (half marathon), Manju Yadav (steeplechase), Sindhusree (pole vault), Sakshi Sharma (javelin throw), Jyoti (half marathon) and Shalini (20 km walk). Dr. Alva said all the selected athletes represent Mangalore University and are trained under Alva's Sports Adoption Scheme. Each athlete will require a financial outlay of ₹2.5 lakh to participate in the event. While Mangalore University has assured a contribution of ₹75,000 per athlete, the remaining expenses are being borne by the foundation, he added.

In the 2015 games held in Croatia, one athlete participated; in the 2017 games in Taiwan, two athletes participated; in the 2019 games in Italy, 10 athletes participated; and in the 2023 games in Chengdu, China, eight athletes took part.
