Imphal/Guwahati/New Delhi: The security forces in a joint operation recovered 86 firearms and over 900 rounds of different types in Manipur, the police said on Tuesday. Based on intelligence inputs about hidden weapons in the state's valley areas, a joint team of the police, central paramilitary forces, army and Assam Rifles launched search operations in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts, the police said. They recovered 86 firearms including five AK series assault rifles, three INSAS and 16 self-loading rifles (SLRs). The joint teams also found over 900 rounds of various types including 7.62 mm and 5.62 mm bullets, and high-explosive mortal shells. "These continued intelligence-led operations represent a major accomplishment for the Manipur Police and security forces in their continued mission to restore peace, uphold public order, and safeguard the lives and property of citizens," the police said in a post on X. They asked the public to cooperate with the police and security forces in promptly reporting any suspicious activity or information linked to illegal arms to the nearest police station or the central control room. The frequency of arrests has been increasing, officials said, highlighting the success of ongoing operations. Many of the insurgents, such as those from the Meitei armed group Kangleipak Communist Party (People's War Group) or KCP (PWG), have been arrested for extortion. These insurgents have not spared even the common people who are already in a difficult situation due to the ethnic crisis, social workers have said. The police also said they arrested 16 more insurgents and recovered 35 firearms in separate operations across the state. The state police, army and central police forces arrested 10 wanted insurgents from five districts and recovered 35 firearms including improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Six more insurgents were arrested in the last 24 hours from Bishnupur, Thoubal and Imphal West, all of them in the valley. Security Forces Face Resistance In Churachandpur There was tension from Monday evening till the early hours on Tuesday in Kuki-dominant Churachandpur district due to protests against an attempt to arrest an insurgent by the security forces, news agency PTI reported. The security forces tried to arrest the insurgent from Molhoi village on Monday evening, PTI reported. However, a huge crowd gathered there and stopped the security forces from arresting the insurgent. The mob grew in numbers and the protest intensified with tyres set on fire to block the road. Following the face-off, which lasted for some six hours, the security forces left the village at 1 am without arresting the insurgent, officials said.

Imphal: In a major crackdown on illegal arms possession, security forces recovered a large cache of arms, ammunition, and explosives during early morning operations on Tuesday across valley districts of Manipur. "Acting on specific intelligence regarding concealed weapon stockpiles, joint teams comprising Manipur Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and Army/Assam Rifles launched coordinated raids in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts," Manipur IGP (intelligence) K Kabib told the mediapersons at a press conference on Tuesday. The operations led to the seizure of 86 weapons, including five AK-series rifles, three INSAS rifles, 16 SLRs, five .303 rifles, 19 pistols, two carbines, 60 assorted rifles, and other warlike stores such as anti-riot guns, SBBL/bore action guns, JVPCs, bolt-action rifles, and one two-inch mortar. A total of 974 rounds of live ammunition — including 7.62mm, 5.56mm, .303, 9mm, and .32mm rounds — were recovered along with nine grenades, six HE mortar shells, two tube launchers, and four improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The raids also yielded 41 magazines and six wireless handsets. Calling it a major achievement in ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal arms networks and strengthen law and order, Kabib said the recovery would bolster peace initiatives across the state. He urged citizens to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or the Central Control Room. "We remain committed to working in close coordination with all security stakeholders. Targeted operations will continue in a sustained and strategic manner to safeguard the lives and property of our citizens," he added.

A Defence spokesman said that the intelligence-based, coordinated joint operations resulted in the arrest of ten militants of various hill and Valley-based banned extremist outfits. He said joint operations were conducted during the past few days in the five valley and hill districts of Kangpokpi, Bishnupur, Tengnoupal, Imphal West and Imphal East. The Army, during the operations, used specialised resources like explosive detection dogs. Army and Assam Rifles formations under the Spear Corps launched a series of operations in coordination with Manipur Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Meanwhile, Manipur Police arrested six more militants of different outfits during the past 24 hours from Bishnupur, Thoubal and Imphal West districts. The arrested extremists belonged to Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and People's Liberation Army (PLA) outfits.

Ammunition seized included 526 live rounds of 7.62 mm, 226 rounds of 5.56 mm, 190 rounds of .303 mm, seven rounds of 9 mm, and four rounds of .32 mm. The forces also confiscated six wireless handsets and two tube launchers. Miscreants looted over 6,000 weapons from state forces' armouries since ethnic violence erupted in the state in May 2023. The Manipur Police, in a press statement, described the operation as a major success in the ongoing effort to neutralise illegal arms networks and restore peace and security in the state. The operation underscores the close coordination among security agencies and the proactive approach being taken to prevent further violence. Police authorities reaffirmed their commitment to continuing such focused and intelligence-driven operations, it said. This is the third significant weapon recovery in recent times. On July 4, the forces seized 203 weapons and explosives during joint search operations in the hill districts of Manipur. Before that, in another operation, 328 weapons and 8,665 assorted ammunition were recovered.

The six Arambai Tenggol members were involved in physically assaulting state police personnel during a bandh in Bishnupur district on June 9, a police statement said. Since ethnic violence broke out in the state in May 2023, Manipur has witnessed at least 260 deaths and is currently under President's rule. The strife between the Meitei and Kuki communities also rendered thousands of people homeless, forcing them to stay in relief camps.
