Gambhir, BCCI selectors accused of picking players on gut feeling, ignoring performances: 'This non-selection is not about performance'

Taking example of Sarfaraz Khan, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar said that he was dropped from the Test squad not because of lack of runs but due to lack of confidence. read more Gautam Gambhir and BCCI selectors have been criticised for the Test squad picked for India's tour to England. Image: Reuters Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has accused the Indian men's cricket team selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir of picking players on gut feeling rather than on past performances. Former Indian batter Manjrekar sighted the omission of Sarfaraz Khan from the squad for the England tour while making his case. Sarfaraz Khan made two fifties on his debut against England in February 2024. He also smashed 150 in the second innings against New Zealand in Bengaluru in a losing cause. However, scored only 21 runs in the next four innings as he lost his place in the playing XI. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Sarfaraz Khan did not feature in a single Test match in Australia as India lost the five-Test series 3-1 and had been dropped from the squad in favour of Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair. Manjrekar questions BCCI's slection policy Manjrekar feels Sarfaraz has been undone by the current dispensation, including head coach Gambhir and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection panel, which is headed by Ajit Agarkar. 'Under Gautam Gambhir's stewardship and with Rohit not there anymore, I see a tendency in this management to pre-empt performances of individuals while making selections,' Manjrekar wrote in his column for Hindustan Times. 'As in, the dominating thought here is to apply their own view of the likely success and failure of players depending on conditions and opposition,' he added. Manjrekar added that Sarfaraz Khan was dropped because 'someone important' felt he would not score runs in England. 'Take the example of Sarfraz Khan. Three fifties and a 150 at home in four Tests and failures in only four innings after that and Sarfaraz does not get a single game in Australia,' Manjrekar said. 'For the England tour too, he has been left out despite his performances in recent times outweighing Karun Nair's completely. So, this non-selection is not about performance, it's about someone important in the leadership group thinking Sarfaraz will not get runs in England and Australia, and Karun Nair will.' India's five-Test tour of England starts in Leeds on 20 June. Shubman Gill has been declared the captain for the tour while Rishabh Pant will be his deputy. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Gautam Gambhir, Ajit Agarkar Called Out Over India Squad For England Tests: "With Rohit Sharma..."

India's squad for the five-match Test series against England saw the return of several players who have done well in domestic cricket, headlined by the likes of Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur. However, former India cricketer and renowned cricket expert Sanjay Manjrekar has raised an eyebrow at the process of selection for the Test squad. Taking the example of Sarfaraz Khan, who was left out of the England tour squad after not being given a match in Australia, Manjrekar criticised the selection, particularly raising a finger at the method of head coach Gautam Gambhir. "Under Gautam Gambhir's stewardship and with Rohit not there anymore, I see a tendency in this management to pre-empt performances of individuals while making selections," Manjrekar wrote, in his column for The Hindustan Times. "As in, the dominating thought here is to apply their own view of the likely success and failure of players depending on conditions and opposition," Manjrekar added. Manjrekar raised the case of Sarfaraz, stating that he had perhaps been dropped harshly from the scheme of things. "Take the example of Sarfraz Khan. Three fifties and a 150 at home in four Tests and failures in only four innings after that and Sarfaraz does not get a single game in Australia," Manjrekar said. "For the England tour too, he has been left out despite his performances in recent times outweighing Karun Nair's completely. So, this non-selection is not about performance, it's about someone important in the leadership group thinking Sarfaraz will not get runs in England and Australia, and Karun Nair will." Sarfaraz Khan had lost 10 kg through a strict diet plan ahead of the Test series against England, according to a report by India Today. Sarfaraz, who made his debut for India back in 2024, has not played a single overseas Test match. The batter has been picked in the India A squad for the two matches against England Lions and the report claimed that he was getting ready to make the most of his opportunity. Sarfaraz reportedly is on a strict diet of boiled vegetables and chicken to improve his fitness. India A are scheduled to play two games against England Lions (May 30-June 2 in Canterbury and June 6-9 in Northampton) and one intra-squad match against the senior India Test squad (June 13-16 in Beckenham). Nair, who scored a triple hundred against England in Chennai in December 2016, scored 863 runs at an average of 53.93 in Vidarbha's Ranji Trophy winning 2024/25 season and became the fourth-highest run-getter of the tournament.

"PBKS bowling attack leaves them a bit vulnerable...": Manjrekar

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 25 (ANI): Following Punjab Kings (PBKS) loss to Delhi Capitals (DC), former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar said that the bowling attack of the second-place holders leaves them 'a bit vulnerable'. PBKS' finish in the final two is under jeopardy, as after their loss to DC by six wickets, they are just left with one game, and so are Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who could displace them from the top two. PBKS' final league game is with an in-form Mumbai Indians (MI) while RCB will be facing Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). PBKS' bowling attack did not feature lead spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and also did not bowl Marco Jansen with the new ball and in death overs, instead using Azmatullah Omarzai and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis while defending 207. 'I think Punjab Kings' bowling attack leaves them a bit vulnerable. But if they can sort out their bowling a little, things could improve. I am not sure why Chahal didn't play. In the end, when they could not defend 200, it was not about bowling poorly -- it just looked like they lacked the ability. Stoinis, despite his best efforts, was never going to defend 8 or 10 runs in the final over. The same applies to Omarzai in these conditions,' said Manjrekar, a JioStar expert, on 'Match Centre Live' on JioHotstar. On the team that will be the first to seal their top two spot, Manjrekar said it could be GT, who have won nine out of their 13 games so far and lost just four, including their most recent game to LSG. They are taking on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday. 'I think Gujarat Titans might be the first team to secure a top-two spot. They have only dropped one game, which could be just what they need to recharge and come back stronger in the next match,' he concluded. (ANI)

IPL 2025: Gujarat Titans might be the first team to secure a top-two spot, says Manjrekar

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar backed table toppers Gujarat Titans to finish in the top-two spot of the IPL 2025 standings. Currently, Gujarat Titans are placed at the top spot with 18 points in 13 matches while Punjab Kings (17 points), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (17 points) and Mumbai Indians (16 points) sit at second, third and fourth respectively. All four teams have already secured playoffs berth and are fighting for the top-two spot. With only one game remaining against Chennai Super Kings, GT have to win the clash to confirm the top spot. "I think Gujarat Titans might be the first team to secure a top-two spot. They've only dropped one game, which could be just what they need to recharge and come back stronger in the next match," Manjrekar said on JioHotstar. RCB and PBKS lost their penultimate games to Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals respectively to dent their top-two finish hopes. Manjrekar hailed Sameer Rizvi's mature knock under pressure for Delhi Capitals against Punjab Kings. 'He's coming of age, like many young Indian players this season. It hasn't been about the big names — this IPL has belonged to the younger lot. What stood out in this innings was how he dominated spin and found ways to score against quality bowlers like Marco Jansen and Arshdeep Singh. And this was a proper chase — there wasn't any advantage from dew, which can sometimes make it feel like you're already 20 runs ahead. That wasn't the case, and if not for Rizvi, I don't think Delhi Capitals would've pulled it off.' Manjrekar observed how IPL 2025 has been defined by Gen Bold players and lauded youngsters like Priyansh Arya and Vaibhav Suryavanshi for their breakout season. "The big takeaway for me this IPL is the emergence of lesser-known players making a huge impact — names like Sameer Rizvi, Shashank Singh, Nehal Wadhera, Naman Dhir, Priyansh Arya, and Prabhsimran Singh. There's even a 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the mix. It's been their IPL, more than the big iconic names. Those stars are fading, and these young players are taking centre stage — that's been the story so far.
