This Is Why Fans Are Asking Manny Jacinto to Choke Them

Manny Jacinto, star of The Good Place, Star Wars: The Acolyte, and most recently Freakier Friday, inspires a unique and passionate fervor in nearly everyone he meets. It is evident in his decidedly nontraditional fan encounters ("sometimes [they'll] ask me to choke them") and in the giddiness he sparked in our editor-in-chief, Willa Bennett, during their chat on the latest episode of Blind Date. Those 'choking' requests stem from his Acolyte character's special Force powers. As for Willa's glee, she was, after all, on a date with Manny Jacinto. During this dinner date in the video above, Manny modeled some very ideal husband behavior. In the (hopefully rare) event my future spouse ever goes on a romantic date as part of his press tour, I can only hope he'd keep the conversation as focused on me as Manny did on his wife, actor Dianne Doan! Throughout the interview, Manny shared how he and Dianne met, their adorable proposal story, and how they maintain a healthy relationship within the wild Hollywood machine. He was also fully candid about which famous couple he'd join as a third... and I must say, his choice was valid. Watch the full episode above for the whole, entertaining conversation. You too will want to go on a date with Manny after this.

The actor Manny Jacinto says the best marriage advice he's ever gotten is to go to couples therapy when things are good

"Freakier Friday" actor Manny Jacinto knows that the honeymoon phase doesn't last forever, but he doesn't wait for cracks to show before working on his marriage. In an interview with Cosmopolitan published on Tuesday, Jacinto said a good piece of relationship advice he once received was to "go to couples therapy before you need it." "It goes for therapy in general. You don't want to be going to couples therapy when you're in a really bad spot because sometimes it might be too late," Jacinto told Cosmopolitan. Having a neutral third party can help with communication and deepen understanding between partners, he said. Moreover, maintaining a marriage requires constant effort. "It takes work, time, and communication, but it's worth it. If it was easy, everybody would stay married. But it's not easy," Jacinto said. Jacinto, also known for his roles in "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Star Wars: The Acolyte," married fellow actor Dianne Doan in 2021. When navigating relationships, he said he finds it helpful to ask himself whether he is reacting to his feelings or to what his partner is actually saying. "So it can be as simple as, 'Am I hungry and is this why I'm acting like this? Or did I not get enough sleep? Am I actually responding to what they're saying properly and giving it the full attention?'" Jacinto said. "Because I noticed that if I don't get a good amount of sleep or if I'm hungry, if I'm having a bad day, that gets passed on to our relationship." A representative for Jacinto did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours. Other Hollywood celebrities have also shared why couples therapy is essential to their relationships. In August 2024, Rob Lowe said he and his wife of over 30 years, Sheryl Berkoff, have gone for counseling even when they "didn't need it." "It's like taking your car in and making sure the engine's running great," Lowe said. In March, Meghan Trainor told Business Insider that she and her husband, Daryl Sabara, started going to marriage counselling once a month. "We heard our friends were in couples therapy, which made us wonder if we should do that, too. We said to ourselves, 'Let's try it and see how we can get even closer,'" Trainor said.

Manny Jacinto recommends couples therapy

Manny Jacinto has advised all couples to get therapy. The Freakier Friday actor tied the knot with Grey's Anatomy actress Dianne Doan and revealed the best piece of advice he was given prior to marriage, was to go to couples therapy 'before you need it'. Manny, 37, told Cosmopolitan: 'A good piece of advice that was given to me was to go to couples therapy before you need it. "It goes for therapy in general. You don't want to be going to couples therapy when you're in a really bad spot because sometimes it might be too late. It helps with communication and figuring each other out, having that extra person." Manny also admitted marriage can be hard work but insisted it is worth it. He said: "You have this idea, especially in all these movies that we watch, that it's gonna be a happy ending forever, but there's a reason why it ends on the happy ending. Because there's other chapters that unfold. It takes work, time and communication, but it's worth it. If it was easy, everybody would stay married. But it's not easy." And Manny does his best not to let a bad day affect his relationship with his wife. He explained: "The biggest thing that helped me was asking myself, 'Am I responding to how I'm feeling or am I actually responding to what they're saying?' So it can be as simple as, 'Am I hungry and is this why I'm acting like this? Or did I not get enough sleep?' Am I actually responding to what they're saying properly and giving it the full attention? 'Because I noticed that if I don't get a good amount of sleep or if I'm hungry, if I'm having a bad day, that gets passed on to our relationship. "But love is work. You gotta work at it. But it's the most beautiful thing and you get the most special moments. And life is just so much more happy when you can share it with somebody."

Manny Jacinto open to filming, creating stories in the Philippines

Filipino-Canadian actor Manny Jacinto has expressed interest in working on films in the Philippines, saying he wants to create stories that can be produced in his homeland. In an interview on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Jacinto said his 'actual goal' is to write and develop stories about the Philippines. 'Whether to act here or create stories here, that's the goal,' he said. The Hollywood actor revealed he is working on a family-centered story involving sabong (cockfighting), clarifying it is unrelated to the ongoing missing sabungeros case. 'I can't say too much about it because it's still in the works, but it's something along those lines,' he said. Jacinto, who moved to Canada at the age of three, said he still understands Filipino and has relatives in the country. He shared that he frequently visits for family occasions and last returned two Christmases ago with his and his wife's parents to explore the Philippines. While Jacinto is now enjoying success in Hollywood, he admitted to facing numerous rejections, particularly as a person of color. 'It's tough to be in the industry, especially as a person of color. Whether you're Asian or Filipino, there's a lot of rejection… I built up my work ethic because of my parents, and I just continue to strive on,' he said. Jacinto is in the Philippines to promote his new film Freakier Friday, a sequel to the 2003 hit Freaky Friday starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. In the movie, he plays Filipino-British chef Eric Reyes, who is set to marry Anna Coleman (Lohan) and start a new life in Los Angeles, despite the disapproval of their daughters Lily (Sophia Hammons) and Harper Coleman (Julia Butters).
