Coming off road series losses, Padres, Cardinals open 4-game set
July 24 - The San Diego Padres will be looking to generate more offense and play better defense as they continue their push toward the postseason. They lost two of three games in Miami this week before coming to St. Louis for a four-game series against the Cardinals that starts Thursday night. San Diego scored just seven runs in the series against the Marlins while remaining in the National League's third wild-card slot. "We're playing a lot of games where we don't have a lot of margin for error," Padres manager Mike Shildt said after his team took a 3-2 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday. "We play a lot of clean games, and (Wednesday), we gave away a little too much that cost us." The Padres sit 25th in the majors in runs scored. As such, president of baseball operations A.J. Preller has expressed an interest in acquiring more offense before the trade deadline. "We've got to put ourselves in good position regardless of what happens at the deadline," San Diego third baseman Manny Machado said. "We want to make a postseason run. We want to get deep into the postseason. That fact doesn't change whether we do anything or we don't. We've just got to go out there and play better baseball than we did these last few days." Machado committed a throwing error in each of the two losses at Miami. "It came down to some stupid errors I made that allowed some dumb runs," he said. "Would've been a different story if I played a little better defense. When you're playing games like this, I think it comes down to defense. "That's why we lost. Those stupid errors." The Padres will open the St. Louis series with Yu Darvish on the mound. The right-hander has struggled to an 0-2 record and 6.08 ERA in his three starts since returning to the rotation following an elbow injury that sidelined him for the first half of the season. Darvish has made nine lifetime starts vs. St. Louis, going 2-4 with a 3.20 ERA. San Diego will catch the Cardinals reeling from a 1-5 start after the All-Star break. St. Louis got swept at Arizona, then lost two of three games at Colorado. During the five defeats, the Cardinals were outscored 36-11. St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol was most disappointed with his hitters after his team lost to the Rockies 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon -- Colorado's first shutout win since May 15, 2024. "Our approaches weren't very good," Marmol said. "In my opinion, that's the worst game we've played." The Cardinals' offense has sagged when the team has fallen behind early in games over the past week. "That's part of it," Marmol said. "We've done it a decent amount after the break. It does take it out of you. You have to be able to separate it. That's part of being mentally tough. You've got to separate what's going on on that side of the ball and still take productive at-bats and keep your approach." The Cardinals will open the series with Sonny Gray (9-4, 4.04 ERA), who is coming off an ugly 10-1 loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday. He allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings in that contest. Gray is 3-0 with a 1.58 ERA in three career starts against the Padres. --Field Level Media

Marlins hold off late Padres' rally in 4-3 win
Rookie Agustín Ramírez had two hits and scored two runs, and the Miami Marlins held on to beat the San Diego Padres 4-3 on Tuesday night. Kyle Stowers doubled and drove in a run while Heriberto Hernández singled twice and had an RBI for the Marlins. Miami starter Edward Cabrera (4-4) scattered five hits and struck out six over 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball. It was Cabrera's first outing since July 11 as his initial appearance following the All-Star break was delayed while he dealt with elbow discomfort. Stowers' RBI double capped a two-run first against Padres starter Stephen Kolek (3-5). Otto López put Miami on the board when he scored from third on a throwing error by San Diego third baseman Manny Machado. The Padres narrowed the deficit on Luis Arraez's run-scoring single in the third before Hernández hit an RBI single off in the sixth and Javier Sanoja added a run-scoring triple in the eighth to pad the Marlins' lead to 4-1. Cade Gibson relieved Cabrera and got the next four outs. Anthony Bender followed with a perfect eighth before closer Ronny Henriquez ran into trouble in the ninth. Gavin Sheets drew a leadoff walk against Henriquez and advanced on Xander Bogaerts' double. Jackson Merrill followed with a two-run double t make it 4-3. Henriquez retired Jake Cronenworth on a pop out, struck out José Iglesias and got his sixth save when pinch hitter Trenton Brooks popped out. Kolek gave up three runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. Cabrera's outing ended after he sprinted from the mound and fielded Bogaerts' dribbler to throw Arraez out at the plate as he attempted to score from third. Xavier Edwards singled in the sixth for the Marlins and has hit safely in 16 of 18 games in July. Padres RHP Dylan Cease (3-9, 4.64) will start against Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantara (4-9, 7.14) in the series finale on Wednesday.

Padres' bullpen shuts down Marlins
July 22 - Four Padres relievers combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings as San Diego defeated the host Miami Marlins 2-1 on Monday night in their series opener. The Padres, who are a victory away from their fourth straight winning three-game series, produced just five hits. However, they got enough pitching from starter Randy Vasquez (one run in 4 1/3 innings), Adrian Morejon (1 2/3 innings), Jeremiah Estrada (one inning), Jason Adam (one inning) and Robert Suarez (one inning). Morejon (8-4) retired all five batters he faced while Suarez picked up his 29th save. Miami's Kyle Stowers homered in the fourth inning, a 400-foot drive. He also had a 380-foot shot caught in the second. The first-time All-Star has 22 homers this season, including six in his last five games. Marlins starter Eury Perez (3-3) allowed five hits, two walks and two runs in five innings. San Diego opened the scoring in the second inning on a rally started by Xander Bogaerts' double off the wall in right-center and a wild pitch by Perez. Jackson Merrill pulled an RBI single to right and scored on Martin Maldonado's two-out double down the third-base line - running through a stop sign from third-base coach Tim Leiper. Miami had runners on first and second with one out in the third when Agustin Ramirez smashed a 115-mph liner. However, the ball was hit right at two-time Gold Glove third baseman Manny Machado, who doubled Jesus Sanchez off second base. The Marlins cut their deficit to 2-1 in the fourth on Stowers' homer. That homer came one pitch after Stowers was nearly hit by a pitch. San Diego missed a chance to take the lead in the fifth. Fernando Tatis Jr. drilled a leadoff double and advanced on Luis Arraez's groundout to second. However, Perez struck out Machado on a pitch below the strike zone. Gavin Sheets' flyout ended the threat. Liam Hicks hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth, but Heriberto Hernandez grounded out to end the game. Tuesday's game features a pair of struggling right-handers: San Diego's Dylan Cease (3-9, 4.64 ERA) against Miami's Sandy Alcantara (4-9, 7.14 ERA). Cease is closing in on the one-year anniversary of his July 25 no-hitter against Washington. --Field Level Media
