Dengue cases on the rise in Ernakulam
Kochi: Reflecting gaps in source reduction activities, Ernakulam continues to witness rising dengue fever cases. As many as 291 cases were reported in the first six days of June around 49 cases per day. Health officials, who admitted that cases are reported from various places, said the cases will decrease only when people carry out regular source reduction activities to control the larvae of Aedes aegypti. "The number of patients developing complications is very low. We inform the authorities concerned in areas where cases are rising and urge them to intensify source reduction," said a health official. The Kerala Public Health Act 2023 equips the health department to take action against those who fail to carry out source reduction activities. District panchayat president Manoj Moothedan said he will convene the district public health committee next week to discuss the health issues arising in the district.

Work on new commercial complex at Kakkanad to begin soon
Work on the new commercial complex in Kakkanad is expected to begin soon. The design, plan, and other details of the proposed complex, 'Kakkanad Commercial Complex 2.0', were unveiled at a review meeting here. The project was planned after the present complex was found inadequate to meet the growing requirements of the administrative centre of Ernakulam district. The proposed facility will come up on the land belonging to the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA). It will replace the commercial complex, which is around 50 years old. The present building will be brought down before the new complex is built. The presentation on the proposed complex was made before the District Collector and officials of the GCDA and the district panchayat as well as members of the Thrikkakara municipal council. The GCDA, which has prepared the plan for the new commercial complex, has provided parking space to serve the upcoming commercial complex in keeping with the growing vehicular traffic. Besides, the Collector, GCDA Chairman K. Chandran Pillai, district panchayat president Manoj Moothedan and municipal councillor A.A. Ibrahim Kutty were present. The proposed complex will have five storeys, including basement, and will have a total space of 18,000 sq. ft. The basement will be used totally for parking. There still be separate entry and exit. The five storeys will house shops, business establishments, meeting hall, and office space. It was decided that commercial establishments that will require temporary rehabilitation will be rehabilitated as the work on the building progressed.
