Kolkata police order suo motu inquiry into claims of injury of RG Kar victim's mom
KOLKATA: Police in Kolkata have opened a suo motu probe into allegations that the RG Kar medical college rape-murder victim's mother was wounded during Saturday's march to Bengal secretariat Nabanna, setting off a political slugfest between TMC and BJP over who was to blame. The parents have not filed a formal complaint, but BJP said the matter may be raised in Calcutta HC Monday. Police commissioner Manoj Verma said on Sunday that officers are reviewing footage from bodycams, traffic and drone surveillance, and TV broadcasts to determine how and where the parents were allegedly attacked. "Until we analyse the footage from different angles, it's not possible to say what happened. We are conducting a detailed inquiry," he said. The victim's father questioned the probe's credibility, citing the alleged failure to review last year's RG Kar CCTV footage and warning the latest one could be "AI-generated". He alleged RAF personnel beat his wife with sticks and pushed him during the march. Police allegedly resorted to mild lathi charge while pushing the crowd back, and the couple stumbled. The mother claimed a head wound. She was discharged Sunday from a private hospital, which said her condition was stable. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 90's Icon: See Her Stunning Photos Now Cash Roadster Undo Her husband alleged the hospital initially reported a serious head wound but later changed it to an "accident" under political pressure. "We refused to accept (the new report) and will inform the court," he said. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh called the allegations an "outright lie" and challenged the parents to produce proof of police hitting them. He accused BJP functionaries of pushing the parents forward "for a photo op". The march, marking the first anniversary of the crime, was called by Bengal assembly leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari (BJP) and backed by the parents. BJP's Kaustav Bagchi said the parents were likely to lodge a complaint soon.

Mirzapur actor Priyanshu Painyuli: Always a deep meaning in rakhis my sisters choose for me
When it's Raksha Bandhan and actor Priyanshu Painyuli receives a thoughtful, plantable rakhi from his cousin sister, then the world can definitely sit-up and mouth the actor's viral dialogue, 'Ye bhi theek hai '! On a shopping spree with HTCity, the 36-year-old gets sentimental as he browses through rakhis in the buzzing lanes of Lajpat Nagar's Central Market. Popular for his portrayal of Robin in the web series, Mirzapur Season 2, the Delhi-born actor talks at length about his strong bond with the Capital, and adds: 'I miss having my sisters with me as rakhi shopping here feels special.' Actor Priyanshu Painyuli, popular for his role in Mirzapur, shops with us at Lajpat Nagar's Central Market on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan 2025. (Photos: Manoj Verma/HT) Priyanshu took his time walking through Lajpat Nagar, stopping frequently to check out the endless variety of rakhis on display.(Photos: Manoj Verma/HT) 4 P's: Pure, Special & Unbreakable 'Every year, the festival takes me back to my childhood with my cousin sisters, Priyanka and Prerna. Back then, we were the 4 P's — Priyanka, Pallav, Prerna and me, Priyanshu — and we celebrated rakhi like it was more than a festival. Hum dono bhai hamesha super excited hote thay. It was the day we, two brothers and two sisters, were all heart. For us, rakhi was less about ritual and more about celebrating friendship.' The actor gave us a peek into the thoughtful rakhis he receives from his two cousin sisters every year.(Photos: Manoj Verma/HT) From big rakhis to meaningful ties His rakhi journey, Priyanshu laughs and shares, has gone from being flashy to meaningful. 'As a kid, I loved wearing the biggest rakhi possible so I could show it off. Now, the rakhis my sisters choose always carry deep meaning. Priyanka didi, knowing my love for travel, often sends ones with words like Musafir or organic, plantable rakhis. She says they symbolise her prayers for me to flourish. Prerna, on the other hand, sends rakhis with healing stones for calmness, peace, and good health.' Rakhi = Special Favours 'Priyanka didi is eight years older, so rakhi was my time to flip the script and get pampered. After the rakhi ceremony, I'd ask her to convince mum about something — like letting me go on a night out with friends,' he grins. 'With Prerna, who's just three years older, it's always been more like a friendship — we share secrets, crack jokes and it's easy and effortless between us.' Priyanshu pauses at a shop in a narrow lane at Lajpat to take a closer look at the traditional rakhis available in plenty.(Photos: Manoj Verma/HT) 'For My Sisters, I'm Still Pashu Bhai' Despite his growing fame, Priyanshu insists nothing has changed in their bond. 'I know they keep showing my shows and interviews to their friends, but for them, I'm still 'Pashu bhai' — the same younger brother they've always known. Now that we live in different cities, sending personalised gifts can be tricky. So we have a running joke — Rakhi ka gift pending hai. Whenever we meet, I take them shopping. It's our way of stretching the celebrations a little longer.' For more, follow HT City Delhi Junction

‘Organisers should apply for permission in advance': Police deny nod to Nabanna protest today
THE WEST Bengal as well as the Kolkata Police have prohibited a 'Nabanna Abhiyan' protest scheduled for Saturday, citing security concerns and a 'lack of official permission.' The protest, called by the parents of the RG Kar rape and murder victim, would not be allowed at Nabanna, the state administrative headquarters, senior officers said on Friday. The police have instead suggested two alternative locations for peaceful demonstrations: the Santragachi bus stand and the Rani Rashmoni area. Officers pointed out that prohibitory orders are in effect around Nabanna, making protests and processions illegal in the area due to high-level security. The police also claimed that the organisers had not applied for permission for the rally, despite a similar protest last year by the West Bengal Students' Association that had the backing of the BJP. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma and Howrah City Police Commissioner Praveen Tripathi, addressing a press conference, appealed to organisers to apply for permission in advance, specifying the location, number of participants and logistics to allow police to make the necessary arrangements. Tripathi said, 'Apply for a peaceful protest. Inform in advance where, how many people will come, and how they will reach there. Then the police can take action accordingly.' The 'Kalighat Chalo' abhiyan, a separate protest by the Abhaya Mancha organisation, has also been informed of an alternative location, according to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma. He said, 'The organizers have been informed about this. An alternative place has also been identified for them.' While the Calcutta High Court has affirmed that 'peaceful protest is a fundamental right,' it has also mandated that such demonstrations must be non-violent and not cause damage to government property. The police emphasised that any violation of rules will result in strict action. To ensure compliance, authorities will deploy CCTV cameras, drones, and other surveillance measures. State Police ADG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar warned, 'If there is a gathering at a place other than the alternative place, action will be taken according to the situation. But it is clear that gatherings cannot be held in Nabanna or adjacent areas.' ADG (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim added, 'Rules apply to all: To those in politics as well as the general public. Proportionate and adequate action will be taken against any violation of rules.'

'Reclaim the night' set to return to Kolkata with calls for justice, one year after RG Kar incident
The West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum has organised a nighttime procession from College Square to Shyambazar, followed by a sit-in protest, though it's unclear if police have approved the gathering. Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari has supported the family's call for the Nabanna march. Police officials stated that no permission had been sought for the Nabanna march and reminded that the area is a high-security zone where protests are banned under Section 163 of BNS (formerly Section 144 of IPC). They cited two ongoing High Court cases regarding the protests, noting that while peaceful protest is a fundamental right, the administration can impose restrictions to prevent violence or damage. Authorities have suggested alternative protest locations - Santragachi bus stand in Howrah and Rani Rashmoni Avenue in Kolkata. Police commissioners from both Kolkata and Howrah said that protesters must apply in advance with details about participant numbers and logistics. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma warned that the planned Kalighat march would not be allowed, adding that surveillance through CCTV and drones would help identify any illegal activity. West Bengal Police ADG Supratim Sarkar stated that gatherings at unauthorized locations would face legal action. The case continues to highlight tensions between citizens' right to protest and security concerns, with the medical community and victim's family insisting that justice remains incomplete one year after the horrific crime.
