Kolkata police tighten passport checks to crack down on illegal immigrants and ID fraud; address checks mandatory
Kolkata police tighten passport checks to crack down on illegal immigrants and ID fraud; address checks mandatory KOLKATA: Breaking the syndicates dealing with illegal immigration by identifying the gang heads and double-checking all received ID documents from the source to examine their authenticity were the two reasons behind the changes introduced in passport verification, said Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma on Thursday, stressing the aim was to ensure illegal immigrants could not stay on. "We have re-evaluated the passport verification system. Our primary target is to identify syndicate members and individuals involved in such illegal activities. Wherever documents are getting used, we are scrutinising and verifying them right back to their source," Verma. "The accused at times use different addresses for different cases. We are cross-checking Aadhaar addresses with other ID documents." Verma was speaking to reporters after planting saplings at the Alipore Bodyguard Lines on World Environment Day on Thursday. He urged citizens to plant at least 10 trees as a "contribution to society". Going back to passport verification, Verma pointed out that no new passport would be issued nor any old one renewed without an address visit. Even cops asking passport applicants to visit police stations would face action, Verma said. The SOP says all documents of a passport applicant will be uploaded on the portal to root out discrepancy. Applicants can monitor document verification status through a link provided by police. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !

KP focus on ‘Bikash Bhavan-like protests'
1 2 3 Kolkata: Lalbazar has instructed all officers to remain vigilant, with a particular focus on intelligence gathering , to prevent a "Bikash Bhavan-like" protest. With the recent violence at the Kasba DI office still fresh in their minds, senior officers, led by commissioner Manoj Verma , have directed all police stations in Kolkata to be adequately prepared to handle flash protests. This was discussed at the monthly crime meeting on Saturday, with a review being conducted again on Monday. On the ground, Kolkata Police has decided to utilise not only the CCTV cameras monitored by the city force but also private ones to identify the movements of "outsiders" near Kasba District Inspector's office on April 9. Cops have also collected footage from shoulder cameras of officers present during the Kasba chaos. "Also under our radar are those who raised inflammatory slogans about burning down the office and those who later blocked Gariahat crossing on that day. We will send notices to these individuals after May 20," said an officer. Meanwhile, head of KP's detective department, Rupesh Kumar, has directed the force to launch a special operation against unresolved cases. In the meeting, commissioner Verma stated that some case diaries of sub-inspectors transferred from one police station to another remain incomplete, hindering investigations. Need 2 weekend night blocks at Kolkata's Chingrighata to bridge viaduct gap: RVNL
Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) is awaiting Kolkata Police's approval for traffic blocks at Chingrighata to bridge a crucial gap in the New Garia-Airport Orange Line KOLKATA: Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), which is constructing the New Garia-Airport Orange Line , has made a fresh plea to Kolkata Police to allow traffic blocks at Chingrighata on two weekend nights. This is necessary to plug the 366-metre gap in the 8 km viaduct between Ruby and Sector V. Senior officers of Kolkata Police, led by the commissioner Manoj Verma, inspected the Chingrighata and Metropolitan sites over a fortnight ago. They indicated that the traffic block for the latter would be handed over soon for construction of a foot-overbridge (FOB) to access the Beleghata station. However, with no progress on the issue so far, RVNL has urged cops to either give the traffic block at Chingrighata first or provide it along with the one at Metropolitan so that the long-overdue work can be completed. Once the Chingrighata gap is bridged, Orange Line's services can be extended from Ruby. At Sector V, the Orange Line has an interchange with the Green Line, to allow those living along the Bypass to travel to Esplanade and Howrah by metro. RVNL has reasoned with the cops that while it will take 40 days to complete the FOB to connect Beleghata Metro station at Metropolitan with the other side of EM Bypass, launching the two spans (28m and 34m) across the Chingrighata crossing can be done in two weekend nights. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Upto 15% Discount for Salaried Individuals ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo "RVNL proposes to complete the main girder-launching activity of each span in three nights - from Friday to Sunday, between 10 pm and 7 am, during two weekends," a Railways official said. On Feb 2, girder-launching between piers 317, 318, and 319 atop Chingrighata was supposed to begin. RVNL has built a 600-metre lane for traffic diversion while the Ultandanga-bound flank is closed. TOI reported on April 1 that RVNL is incurring an idling cost of Rs 9 lakh daily due to the stalled Metro construction at Chingrighata. "Girder-launching at the busy Chingrighata crossing will become more complex if RVNL misses the ongoing dry spell," the Railways official said. Lalbazar said "certain modifications in traffic furniture and some permissions were pending" regarding the Chingrighata site handover. "KMC must certify that the newly built road is fit for traffic movement," a senior officer said. Officers said the site can be given if Metro agrees to stick to deadlines. Joint CP (traffic) Rupesh Kumar has also urged RVNL to start construction of the underpass at Chingrighata. The Orange Line, which now runs 5.4 km from New Garia to Ruby, will eventually link New Garia-Airport across 29 km.
