Steel Dynamics forecasts first-quarter profit below estimate amid falling steel prices

March 17 (Reuters) - Steel Dynamics (STLD.O), opens new tab forecast its first-quarter earnings below Wall Street estimates on Monday, as declining steel prices continue to weigh on margins of its steel-making segments. The Fort Wayne, Indiana-based company expects its first-quarter earnings to be between $1.36 and $1.40 per share, lower than the analysts' estimate of $1.41 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG. The steelmaker expects the drop in steel prices to affect profit in its fabrication operations segment, but anticipates increased shipments to offset some of the margin compression in its larger steel operations segment. Steel Dynamics also noted an uptick in order activity for the quarter, supported by demand from commercial, data center, manufacturing, warehouse and healthcare sectors. "The accelerated announcements for meaningful manufacturing domestic investment and onshoring, coupled with the U.S. infrastructure program are expected to positively impact demand," the company said on Monday. Steel Dynamics plans to release its first-quarter earnings after the markets close on April 22.

Kate Middleton Makes Cheeky Comment About Prince William's Beard on St. Patrick's Day

Kate Middleton was named Colonel-in-Chief of the Irish Guards in March 2023, and enjoyed St. Patrick's Day with the regiment that same month before having to skip the annual March 17 festivities last year due to her ongoing health battle—first major abdominal surgery and, later, a cancer diagnosis. The Princess of Wales announced in January that she was in remission from cancer and made her return to the St. Patrick's Day festivities on March 17, enjoying sips of Guinness along with members of the regiment and their families. Wearing a bespoke bottle green Alexander McQueen coat (previously seen in 2022 when Kate and Prince William visited the U.S.), she paired the coat with a Lock & Key hat, a gold shamrock Cartier brooch, and a pair of green tourmaline and diamond Kiki McDonough earrings. While speaking with soldiers and their families, she was asked where she lives, to which Kate responded, 'We are in Windsor at the moment. We were in London, but moved there for more green space. It's close enough to London—not too far away.' She also mentioned her husband William's beard, which he debuted last summer: 'These trends come and go,' she said, per Hello!. 'I was saying to my husband, I'm not sure how long he's going to keep his for.' The Prince of Wales made a big stir when he debuted the beard last summer, but apparently not everyone was initially a fan—namely daughter Princess Charlotte, who had 'floods of tears' the first time he tried to grow the beard, 'so I had to shave it off,' he said last November, per People. He gave it another go, adding, 'Then I grew it back. I thought, hang on a second, and I convinced her it was going to be okay.' Jason Knauf, the former aide to the Prince and Princess of Wales, spoke about William's beard in an interview last month with 60 Minutes Australia, telling the program of Kate, 'If she didn't like it, it wouldn't be there. I could tell you that!' Knauf said of the future king's facial hair, 'I love it. I think it's great. But I've talked to him about it, or tried to talk to him about it. He's like, 'It's here. I have a beard. No further conversation.'' Of Kate's appearance on St. Patrick's Day, Guardsman Barry Loughlin said, per The Times, 'She wanted to know how things were going with the blokes in general. She was really nice and really warm. I was kind of flustered. You could tell she had a genuine interest in us.' Read the original article on InStyle
