Meet fluffy 'bookseller' puppy Story at Dog-Eared Books in Iowa

Meet fluffy 'bookseller' puppy Story at Dog-Eared Books in Iowa ‭Independent bookstores are the heartbeats of their communities. They provide culture‬‭ and community, generate local jobs and sales tax revenue, promote literacy and‬ education, champion and center diverse and new authors, connect readers to books in‬ a personal and authentic way, and actively support the right to read and access to‬ books in their communities.‬ Each week we profile an independent bookstore, sharing what makes each one special‬ and getting their expert and unique book recommendations.‬ This week we have Ellyn Grimm and Amanda Lepper, co-owners of‬‭ Dog-Eared Books‬ in Ames, Iowa.‬ What's your store's story?‬ ‭We are high school classmates who returned to our hometown to raise families.‬ We reconnected over a shared love of reading, social justice and our strong-willed‬ daughters who ended up in the same preschool class. As the years passed, we hatched a plan to create something we thought was sorely missing in our community – an‬ independent bookstore. Dog-Eared Books opened on International Women's Day‬ in 2021. We are a place committed to nurturing a love of reading for all‬ members of our community by offering a thoughtfully curated and inclusive selection of‬ books. We believe reading and storytelling make us better humans, allowing us to better‬ care for one another.‬ ‭What makes your independent bookstore unique?‬ We're proud to be located on a thriving, historic Main Street in a college town that attracts people from all over the world. We engage with our local community in a‬ multitude of ways: more than 15 book clubs, puzzle competitions, book fairs for kids and adults,‬ author events, fundraisers, collaborations with other community businesses and‬ organizations and advocacy work around social justice issues.‬ ‭In the age of algorithms and AI, bookstores do what tech cannot – human connection.‬ Our booksellers read voraciously across all genres and can find the perfect read for anyone who walks through our door. Of course, everyone's favorite 'bookseller' is‬ Story, a 6-month-old golden retriever who works as a service animal in the store.‬‭ What's your favorite section in your store?‬ ‭We personally love fiction of the slightly absurd variety – 'Sky Daddy,'‬ 'American Mermaid' and 'Margo's Got Money Troubles,' to name a few. That said, we‬ enthusiastically curate for the tastes of all of our readers.‬ What book do you love to recommend to customers and why?‬ ‭Right now, we're really loving 'So Far Gone' by Jess Walter. We love to recommend it‬ because we think it's a book that speaks to so many of us at this particular time. When‬ ‭the temptation to disengage from the world is so strong, the author urges us to remember why we need connection. And it's funny. We had the privilege of chatting with‬ Jess Walter on our podcast "Bubbles and Books." It was a delight to discover that‬ even with a laundry list of literary awards to his name, he remains warm and welcoming‬. We were so inspired by his hopefulness.‬ ‭What book do you think deserves more attention and why?‬ ‭We were blown away by 'O Sinners!' by Nicole Cuffy. It would be a travesty of epic‬ proportions if it doesn't win all the things. Cuffy writes with such precision and intention.‬ The interwoven narrative structure is brilliant. She also respects her readers – she gives us challenging, fundamentally human questions to grapple with and she doesn't give us easy answers. Cuffy also appeared on our podcast. ‭Why is shopping at local, independent bookstores important?‬ ‭Reading is a solitary activity, but it can also be the basis for meaningful connection – we have found that our store has become a place that has allowed our‬ community to forge connections and come to know one another better. Independent‬ bookstores are run by readers for readers – each one that you walk into will surprise‬ you with its unique offerings and forever change your reading life.‬ What are some of your store's events, programs, or partnerships coming up that‬ ‭you would like to share?‬ ‭We offer four monthly subscriptions that ship all across the country: new release fiction, romance, chapter book, and picture book. Our podcast discusses two of the best things in life – books and champagne. We're thrilled to be hosting one of our all-time favorite authors, Kevin Wilson, in June. Some other upcoming authors we're excited to host are Tarah Dewitt, Jess Walter and Paisley‬ Hope. This summer, we'll be offering puzzle competitions, a boozy adult book fair and a‬ ‭flash tattoo event benefitting reproductive health care.‬

Nicole Kidman To Be Honoured With Women In Motion Award At Cannes 2025

Washington: The Cannes Film Festival and Kering have announced that Nicole Kidman will be the 10th recipient of the Women in Motion Award. This prestigious honour recognises female artists who advance the place of women in cinema and society. The award ceremony will take place on May 18 during a glamorous gala at the festival, confirmed The Hollywood Reporter. Kidman's commitment to working with female directors has been cited as a reason for her selection. In 2017, she pledged to work with a female director every 18 months, but has since exceeded that goal, collaborating with nearly 20 female directors. This commitment to promoting female representation in cinema has made her a powerful example of what Women in Motion have been advocating for over the past decade, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Kering chairman and CEO Francois-Henri Pinault praised Kidman. They said, "Through her artistic standards, her committed choices and her concrete action to change representations in cinema, she is a powerful illustration of what Women In Motion have been defending for a decade," as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. Kidman expressed her gratitude, calling it a "true honour" to receive the award. Kidman joins a roster of esteemed honorees, including Donna Langley, Jane Fonda, Patty Jenkins, Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon, Viola Davis, Michelle Yeoh, and Salma Hayek Pinault. Meanwhile, Kidman is set to star in a new season of Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu, a series where she is an executive producer. She also has upcoming projects, including Margo's Got Money Troubles opposite Elle Fanning and Scarpetta opposite Jamie Lee Curtis.

Nicole Kidman is receiving an award from Salma Hayek's husband... after the bombshells seemed to 'feud' last year

Nicole Kidman is receiving yet another honor in her very long list of accolades. The Oscar winner, who shared a sultry video of herself dancing on a balcony in France, will be the recipient of the Woman In Motion at the Cannes Film Festival which kicks off May 13. In announcing the honor, the committee, sponsored by the the Kering Group - which owns luxury brands including Gucci, Saint Laurent, and many more - explained Kidman, 57, was this year's recipient for her 'artistic audacity' and 'transformative portrayals that have reshaped the representation of women on screen.' Kering is run by Salma Hayek 's husband François-Henri Pinault. Salma and Nicole seem to have a history. Last year a video surfaced of Salma and Nicole at the Balenciaga show in Paris, sparking speculation about a possible feud between the actresses. The video shows Hayek seemingly trying to pose with Kidman for photographers, but Kidman appears to brush her off and then turns to greet Katy Perry. However, a source confirmed that the incident was misconstrued and that the two actresses are on good terms. They were reportedly overwhelmed by the photographers and were simply trying to navigate the situation. Nicole was also praised for honoring her 2017 'pledge to work with a female director every 18 months.' The in-demand star exceeded that promise, collaborating with 19 women directors so far, and for using her production company Blossom films to 'elevate women's voices.' Kidman shared a copy of the announcement in her Instagram Stories along with her heartfelt thanks for the 'incredible recognition.' 'It's a true honor to receive this award from François, Thierry, Iris, my friends at the Kering Group as well as the Cannes Film Festival,' Nicole wrote, referring to Kering chairman and CEO François-Henri Pinault and festival leaders Thierry Fremaux and Iris Knobloch. 'I am proud to join this list of extraordinary women who've received this honor before me – artists and trailblazers I deeply admire,' she continued. 'The Cannes Film Festival has been a part of my life for over 30 years and I am thrilled to add this incredible recognition to the many memories I've made here,' she said. The award ceremony will be on May 18. 'When a great actress works with nearly twenty female directors in the space of a few years, she shows the world just how vibrant and alive the talent of women in cinema really is,' said Knobloch in a statement. 'Through all these projects, and of course through her production company, Nicole Kidman has given those who write, direct, and tell stories all the visibility they deserve,' per The Hollywood Reporter. Kidman worked with women directors on her upcoming projects Margo's Got Money Troubles and Scarpetta. Previous winners are: NBCUniversal chief Donna Langley, Jane Fonda, Isabelle Huppert, Patty Jenkins, Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon, Viola Davis, Michelle Yeoh, Gong Li and Salma Hayek.
